Danny Haynes should drop down a level or two

Leigh Curtis column: Notts County striker Danny Haynes should drop down a level or two to regain confidence.

After holding “honest discussions” with Danny Haynes in the summer, everybody hoped Shaun Derry’s pep-talk would help the striker deliver on his undoubted talent at Notts County.

But five months on, he has made just two appearances and has just returned from a loan spell at Crewe which was pretty unproductive.

A flick through some Twitter comments from Crewe fans were hardly complimentary about his contribution and Derry’s message as the striker headed back was “he has to knuckle down again”.

There is certainly no issue with the player’s work in training, but clearly there is a problem with confidence.

I disagree, I think he'll naturally either end up with a struggling League One team as a asset or he'll end up as a fringe player. I do think League Two is calling, however will Danny accept anything lower than his asking price? I can't see a League Two team being able to afford him.

I genuinely don't believe confidence is the issue.

At least not completely, I think a succession of injuries and poor moves which haven't worked out are catching up. The fact we know he's a good player sort of suggests it's not his confidence, it highlights that he's past his peak and will find his correct level which for me is this division. I don't think Haynes will score more than 10 goals for any side, I'm not trying to put him down or to be negative. I just honestly feel he's fading.

17 goals in 115 games isn't enough to forge a reputation.

8 goals from 51 is poor.

As is 9 in 34 games (at least for a striker considered to be a goalscorer/Championship player).

Midfield or not, the vast majority are as a striker. He's done well to attract higher interest, as his overall record suggests he's been punching above his natural place.

271 games played and 46 goals.

Confidence? I'd try accepting things for how they are.

Thoughts?

Good grief, I didn't realise his record was that bad! Why was he hailed as the messiah when he arrived?

If there is no problem with his work in training, and it is confidence, why send him to a struggling club? He needs sending out somewhere to a club that create shed loads of chances, that may well be to a Woking or similar (a move back down south might suite him anyway personally).

He needs to bag a few at whatever level he can, and then see if he can transfer that confidence back to Notts! If not, then there is always an exceedingly slow boat to China.

Can't believe his record is that poor! I backed him at the start of the season but it's starting to look like he's never going to do anything for us, does his contract end in the summer?

Yes, thank goodness.

We've all been saying the same thing for 2 seasons now, "oh let's hope he bags a few here" , "send him out on loan to get his confidence",

He's just not cut out to be at Notts.

Good luck Mr Haynes, hopefully we'll part ways in Jan. So we can buy for our promotion push

Expires at the end of the season I believe.

I do think he could be useful for a side but its reached the point whereby its clearly not with us. I'll always wish him well but if he didn't feature against Yeovil, I'd be surprised to see him take part in any of the other upcoming games.

Let go, bring in and move on.

None of this confidence stuff because he should have come back from Crewe on a high.

He is tonk. Blagged his way as a League footballer, somehow, but his level is probably the conference or below.

i wished he could find the net but he dont play, we should not look to loan him. get rid early, save the wages!

Tonk :hyper: My word of the day. thanks @Super_Danny_Allsopp

I just googled it, but can't find where it comes from. Anyone know?

Google thinks it means muscular or an illegal immigrant from Mexico :s

@Super_Danny_Allsopp get you with the ghetto speak, mind you I don't think this was quite your intention.

I'm sure I've heard people use the word tonk meaning crap.

If not, just me then

The word tonked would normally mean being beaten by a high score ie 8-1, I have to agree with @PTID1862 though, "bra you is down wit the hood".....

I've got to the point where I don't think he'll ever reach his potential.

Haynes has always been cr@p.  A few folks on NCM, the usual suspects, hailed his arrival as tho' he was some sort of megastar. Lord above knows why.

He reached his potential at 18 or 19 on loan at Ipswich - or whatever age he was. Thought he was God's gift, never put in the graft to develop his talent & thought he was Prem class. Pub player now, end of story, he'll end up in "non League" within 2 years max.  He's on a par with Cassidy who is equally as useless, despite AWM's attempts to defend him!  How he scored goals for Tranmere defies belief - he is utterly clueless anywhere near the opposition's box.  Amendment: He is utterly useless, full stop. Why do we pay these people a salary wen they are incompetent?

If they manage another 50 League goals between them in their entire careers I'd be amazed. Both absolutely hopeless.

I have to say, as centre forwards go, following the injury to Jimmy there are much better I would have looked for...

As an example Mikhail Smith just gone out on loan.... now there is a goal scorer!

They are there, the scorers snapped up by clubs just so that they don't go to a competitor....
