Are we going to see more tactical fouls in the area, it looks likely if they do away with the current system of punishment under the triple jeopardy discussions going on, see article...

Thoughts?

Well that's a lot to take it in, I don't really understand as to why the current system isn't fair?

It might be that the articles gone over my head but if a player makes a foul in the area it should be a penalty. If it's not the last defender then perhaps it should be red, it depends on how bad or dangerous the challenge is. If it is the last player or the keeper it should be red, including suspension because it wouldn't cut out or reduced if punishment wasn't to follow.

Wouldn't it open the door to further cheating? Leave the game as it is.

Really, really stupid idea. Leave the game as is and let cheats be punished properly!

I agree the rules seem fair enough to me.

its not fair to managers and teams who instruct their players to do these things, otherwise it is.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the current laws, the problem is with the massive variance of interpretation, is a last ditch tackle that is a genuine attempt to get the ball that results in no injury to the opposing player a red card? For me it's not but how many times do we see that it is

a couple of interesting opinions here, I am with @Northants Pie on this, often do I see a player sent from the field of play for something really innocuous or indeed a genuine attempt to play the ball and not commit a foul.

As part of one of my coaching badges I had to do some refereeing across a variance of age groups, from kids to adults, through this process you receive a letter of appraisal from the local FA (well you did anyway) with your average score out of ten for the whole season along with the tally of red & yellow cards given out. The season concerned I refereed over 80 games as with the youth, ladies & men's football kicking off at different times you could quite easily be in charge of four matches on a Sunday alone.

Now I kid you not at the end of the season my letter arrived stating that my average mark was 9.1 out of 10, so you think brilliant I obviously must have done something right, the next paragraph is what is wrong with the refereeing side of football, it said "You need to come in and explain why you only handed out 1 red card and 12 yellow cards as this isn't enough for the amount of games you have been in charge of"

Needless to say I have never refereed since as handing out cards thus making the local FA money was not what it was about for me, nor did I see myself as a headmaster in charge of naughty school children.

@Northants Pie I did wonder if any of that happened...

More than you would believe mate, the problem with most, not all, referee's is that they come from a particular type of background, this being the unpopular kid who was never chosen for anything and was most probably not even noticed at school, yet was so desperate to be seen, so it is his way of control, it's probably the first time he has had the ability to influence anything in his life thus you get the games where the ref thinks you've turned up to watch him not the game ala Stuart Attwell, or they get overly officious handing cards out like there burning a hole in their pockets, either of these will guarantee you a high score from the assessor thus moving you up the ladder quickly, being the in the background ref who lets the game manage itself who only ever intervenes when absolutely necessary gets you a very low score.

We all know that the best refs are the one's who do their job and aren't noticed.Unfortunately too many don't apply common sense.I agree with the comments above but will add that players don't help with their diving etc.
