Favourite Books You Read As A Child

Some do seem to have been around forever, some i understand why and others i just don't get the interest in it.

Like Mickey mouse you mentioned i just don't understand the interest, but i'm sure others don't understand why i like the programmes/books i do.

Its like at school when a teacher insists that you read Shakespeare or Dickens  or any book for that matter. Shakespeare is written in the flowery language of his day and I find it a lot over-rated. Dickens books are full of interesting characters and describe his times very well.

Music teachers did a similar thing in encouraging pupils to listen to classical music.My class often endured lessons listening to and being lectured on some tuneless dirge,very rarely being treated to something the whole class enjoyed.

At school they always said reading books is important, but i've always learnt and remembered programmes and films watched at school much easier than a book.

What you learn at school is down to the teachers(and yourself) If a teacher is enthusiastic,has a sense of humour and encourages without ramming the subject down your throat then there is a good chance a pupil will respond.

I fondly recall 'Monkey and me', I don't think I could ever get bored of that story (despite saying it). It was nice how Jake loved it, Ellie also and so does Ava. I think the early book are special, as we share the memory and they later forget.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of the storybook 'the gruffalo', the story line is an exact rip off - A story about a small mouse and Lion if I recall correctly.

Quite a few decent children's book however, as we often pick one or two up for the children.

yes @super_ram the lessons i don't remember so much were the ones i didnt like the teachers or the subject very much. i always remember a maths teacher in juniors telling us 1inch is 3cm and then my mum telling me its 2.5cm not 3cm.

the kids loved monkey and me and still do, but not quite as much as they used to. Ellie loves "the smartest giant in town" and Ava likes "stripy horse" books the most at the moment. Jake likes reading marvel comics.

I remember being told by a teacher, about 1961, that it would be many years before we had colour tv, even though it was already being used in America.The same teacher  also told us that there would never be any skyscrapers or even tall buildings in London because  of the clay that London was built on.

Teachers do say some strange things... i do remember one of my science teachers in secondary school telling us that because of global warming... in 20 years the planet will be too hot to live on... we all thought she was mad.. well thats proved us right. I was 14 at the time so theres not much of those 20 years left

Is there a book anywhere about silly quotes by teachers similar to the ones about pupils silly (but serious) exam answers?

No you don't expect to be given false information. It would be like a doctor telling you you had something you didn't, that happens sometimes but shouldn't either.

Teachers discouraged us from reading comics-why?

Probably because it wasn't always full english, but if it gets kids reading theres nothing wrong with comics.

Jake has been told at school that write anything you read in his reading diary... even comics and also things like leaflets as its still reading.

I think that anything that grabs a childs attention also encourages them to explore that subject further, Kids ask questions and therefore learn.

Yeah it all helps them learn even if they already know the words enough to understand them properly. We tend to get more chance to read with Ellie more than Jake for obvious reasons but she needs us to help her more than Jake does at the moment unfortunetly. They all like reading books though.

Even the Skylanders game Jake got for his birthday helps him read more because he tends to go on the story mode where he has to read whats next and what he needs to to to complete the sections of the game.

Jake is getting very good at reading.He asks me what something says and before I can tell him insists on reading it himself.lol

Where do they get their 'jokes' from? Cows, crocodiles,sharks crossing the road with pizza on their head, then landing on the moon and going to a chippy before being run over by various vehicles.They really do have a weird imagination.

They are very strange jokes though and like you've said before its not so much the joke thats funny, its the way they say them.

I'm surprised that when its Jakes joke theres no stones, acorns involved or skylanders(more recently).

The point of a joke is to make you laugh, well the kids certainly make me laugh.I often have tears of laughter rolling down my cheeks when Jake or Ellie tell them to me.
