Welcome No 1 George Smith

Featured Replies

Welcome from me too, I guess from your user name you are roughly my age, I remember George Smith very well, for those of more tender years George was a goalkeeper in the 60's.

He had a rather cavalier attitude to goalkeeping and thought nothing of dribbling down the wing and even taking a throw in.

Then of course there was the famous cry of "HOLD IT" as he found a Notts player with his goal kick.

When people ask what 'American Pie' is about, they're missing the point. The song isn't about the lines themselves - it's about what is between the lines. The song is about what isn't there.

Thanks for all the kind words and I'm sure I'll get into the swing of things....George Smith was my favourite player way back when everything seemed to be black and white in more ways than the obvious one...Also firm favourites for me back then were Gerry Carver, Don Roby, Bert Loxley, Richad Edward and Pete Russell....God I've have tears in my eye's thinking about them.... :)

Thanks again...

Need to learn to use Richard instead of >>>>>

Yes those names are all familiar to me Richard Edwards sounds like what his mum would call him, shame we can't use the D word.

@No 1 George Smith - I am sure you will, really enjoyed seeing your response. All names mentioned by the man who got me into watching Notts, so I can see why you would recall them so highly.

@super_ram Is Pete Russell the player who you saw red carded (the one Granddad said he wasn't dirty)?

I'm trying to recall why his name stands out so much.

Yes and no @notts-joe.Peter Russell was sent off but not red carded.Red cards weren't introduced until after the 1966 world cup. This match was played at Meadow Lane v Derby County 5/10/1957.Notts won 1-0.From memory I wouldn't say Russell was dirty, just ,shall we say,over-enthusiastic.
