Passed away at 66. No age now days.

Great player and good manager of people. (In other words when I worked there he had a reputation for being a ball breaker!!!)

Sad loss to Nottinghamshire and the cricketing world.

Former Nottinghamshire captain and cricket manager Clive Rice has died at the age of 66.

Rice passed away in his native South Africa after suffering from a brain tumour.

He was a key player at Trent Bridge in the 70s and 80s as he inspired Notts to the County Championship in 1981 and 1987.

In his debut season with Nottinghamshire, the all-rounder took 53 wickets and registered 1,128 runs in the Championship, and along with Sir Richard Hadlee, who arrived at Trent Bridge in 1978, forged a ten-year partnership which secured many honours for the club.

Despite his brilliance, Rice’s international career was restricted to the ODIs due to South Africa’s imposed isolation due to apartheid.

He played for South Africa in a number of unofficial Tests, latterly as captain, and captained South Africa in their first ODI series since their exile end, however, missed out on the 1992 World Cup and never played for his country again.

His first-class cricket continued until 1993-94, his final years being with Natal.

Having served an inspirational captain for Notts, he returned to Trent Bridge as the newly appointed cricket manager in 1999, a position he held until 2003.

He was also a major influence on the career of Kevin Pietersen having brought him to Nottinghamshire in 2001.

Rice's first-class career comprised 482 matches primarily for Transvaal, Natal and Nottinghamshire, and he scored 26,331 runs at an average of 40.95 and took 930 wickets at 22.49 apiece between 1969 and 1994. He also played 479 List A matches, making 13,474 runs and taking 517 wickets.

He scored 17,053 of his first-class runs for Notts at an average of 44.29 and took 476 wickets at an average of 23.58.

In List A cricket, he scored 8,666 runs for Notts and took 291 wickets.
