Music - Haven't Heard In Ages

I tend to listen to Absolute Radio rather a lot, I recently heard a song I hadn't for a long time. My father used to enjoy listening to R.E.M, as a child he pretty much drove me crazy with it. I grew up to appreciate his taste of music, especially since it got drummed into us all. Now, I know he will say 'I had to listen to yours', though I tended to use 'headphones'.

Cheeky will back me up on this, I tend to sing it. LOL

I sometimes go on 'Youtube' to search up a song or performer and get distracted by the options. It's amazing how many versions there are of songs.

 

In the 50's and early 60's there were a lot of british cover versions of U.S.hits and then in the

Beatles era a lot of groups  did their own versions of the same songs.

 

The Beatles have probably had more of their songs copied than any other artists though they covered Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly amongst others.

 

I think I'm correct in saying that Paul McCartney's 'Yesterday' is the most covered song of all time.

 

My favourite cover version of a Beatles song is Joe Cocker's 'With a little help from my friends'

I recently have downloaded a lot of songs from my younger days....I find I am listening to a lot of music at the moment. I find it very relaxing....My favorite song of the moment is:

I remember that being on the radio at work when I was in the lace trade.I had an office area but could still hear the radio that the women listened to whilst machining. The funny thing is that most of the time I didn't even notice the music, unless a song came on that I liked or really disliked

I haven't heard alot of music for ages, although i would love to listen to some once every so often, but i tend to get headaches alot so i just don't bother to listen to much at all if anything nowadays. I think the last time i put music on for myself was about 6 months ago.

The music is generally quite rubbish nowadays in my opinion... but we all like different things. (I know your asking Liam not me though super ram)

I heard some songs classed as old songs nowadays on the radio when Joe had it on the other day and was thinking... i'm not that old yet... even if Jake thinks i am.

I find it difficult to come to terms with the fact that its 50 years ago that The Beatles, etc were taking over the musical world. It's also 50 years since I Ieft school,  though it only seems like about 10 years.

Listen to music nearly all of the time, me! Wide range of bands and artists. In work, we have Radio1 on. Useful to hear whats new as these days the station will only play what's current. Nothing like it used to be mind when it was in its heyday in the 60's and 70's. The listening figures are not good these days especially since the likes of Chris Moyes left. At home and in the car there is only one station for me-Kerrang! This moring I have been listening to a few Cd's  including old un's Are You Experienced by Jimmy Hendrix and a classic from The Beatles  Magical Mystery Tour. (Sure Super Ram will be familiar with this!) Then moving right up to date two Cd's I have recently purchased, The Next Day by David Bowie and Paramore by Paramore. Delighted as I managed to get a ticket for Paramore's Birmingham gig in September. In just over a fortnight Im off to see Midge Ure another artist I admire.

Good for you Sadlad, It doesn't matter what music you listen to, its your personal taste that counts not what others like.

 

In the 60's  my mates were into all kinds of music and this helps broaden your appreciation of different genres. I was often pleasantly surprised to find that I quite liked some music that I wouldn't normally have tried.

 

Radio 1 used to be on when I was in the lace trade and I found that I was enjoying listening less as each year passed by.

 

Yes I like most of The Beatles stuff and saw them in 1963 though coudn't hear them too well because of all the screaming.

I quite like Traditional Jazz, Kenny Ball and Jazzmen, Acker Bilk, Humphrey Littleton and Chris Barber and Blues music, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy etc., my father was heavily into these and he certainly influenced my tastes.

WOW! I'd have loved to have seen the Beatles Super Ram! From that period I also like The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Small Faces etc. Yeah I have been to loads of gigs over the years and will continue to do so. Last couple of years I even watch/listen to rock covers bands. Can't beat music live!

I think I might make you a bit envious now Sadlad .I also saw The Stones in 1964 at The Albert Hall-no not London but Nottingham.We were sat about 3 rows from the front and could almost touch them,They were brilliant! Jet Harris and Tony Meehan, ex Shadows(Diamonds) were on the same bill.  I can't remember who else was on that night but it WAS a great night.

    I also saw The Kinks. I think it was 1967 but was a bit disappointed. I think Ray and Dave were having one of their famous fallouts.as they kept glaring at each other.It was nevertheless another night to remember..

     Another , really fantastic night was when we went to see Bill Haley And The Comets at The Sherwood Rooms , Nottingham. This would again be about 1967.They were absolutely out of this world. The atmosphere was truly electric and I think they were a bit overwhelmed by the reception they got.

I used to go to quite a few live gigs myself before and with Joe but when we had the kids we've only been once since... and that was in 2010.

Alot of the bands i like are getting older now though and most of them are american so don't tour here as much anyway.

I saw The Rolling Stones three times between 11th November 1963 and 2nd August 1964. The first time was at a dance hall in Bath and the August show was open air at Longleat House (I have never seen the lions at Longleat).

Shows were put on at Town Hall in Trowbridge on Fridays and numerous popular bands appeared. I remember the Pretty Things: Phil May, singer, was in phone box outside the venue trying to contact Brian Pendleton, guitarist, who had yet again failed to turn up.

Saw also The Escorts and use an image of them in The Cavern as my Walsall forum avatar.

In later years I became a psychoviking and was well into Fields of the Nephilim.

When I was about 13 our family went to the end of season competition winners weekend at the  Derbyshire Miners Holiday Centre in Skegness.(The Dunes caravan site between Winthorpe Avenue and The Lookout Pub now occupies the site.)

  On the Saturday evening we all went into one of the family bars and there was an Acker Bilk/Kenny Ball type jazz band performing. Trad jazz was very popular at the time and we had a great night-pop and Nibbits-remember them.

We occasionally go in our camper van to Skegness Sands touring site which is on Winthorpe Road so I have seen the old Miners Welfare you refer to. I've not seen the Lookout Pub though, is it any good? Any real ale? If so I'll give it a try next time.

 

The last time we went we tried a pub on the Roman Bank but it was awful, I wouldn't recommend it at all, can't remember what it was called but the beer was like weasel wass.

Apologies Tony, Yes the caravan site is called Sands ,I was getting it mixed up with The Dunes pub at the top of Winthorpe Avenue , which burned down

 

.The Lookout pub is located further north along the seafront.When the Dunes pub was there we used to call in and let the lads go in the adjoining amusement arcade.After a pint we'd walk along the sea front,  past the convalescent home and Sands till we arrived at The Lookout (about 10/15 mins)It's a family orientated pub-Bingo(not for me)We tend to avoid at the weekends because it gets very busy but they have quizzes and competitions in the week.Unfortunately they don't have real ale-John Smith,Boddies,Tetley-it seems to change every year.They do quite nice meals here and there's a a good chippy next door(and the inevitable arcade)

 

There's also The Beachcomber pub-another family  pub-(We had a really nice Sunday dinner here last year) next doorish and The Boathouse,though wheelchair access rules this out for us.

 We tend to choose our nights as to where we go(avoid bingo or Karaoke) and the quality of beer and choice seems to change each year.

 

Was the pub on Roman Bank in Skeg or near Winthorpe Ave?

It was at the top of Winthorpe Avenue, I've just found it on google maps it was the Royal Oak. Avoid at all costs if you like a nice pint, again it was John Smiths and Boddingtons and that wasn't well kept, yuck.

Tony, The Royal Oak changed hands and was done up 2/3 years ago.We first went in  there 29 years ago when William was only 2 weeks old and although the pub was in need of some TLC (this was at the back downstairs) we were made very welcome.There was a kids room (the sort you have described previously) but the staff  were very helpful and they served a marvelous pint of Batemans.

Over the years the pub has changed hands many times and was done up 2/3 years ago but we usually only go in to try out.

I would guess you went in 3/4 years ago when the previous  owner seemed to have lost interest and couldn't be bothered.

They haven't had Batemans for years.Last year I think we only went in once(me and the wife) and there was no atmosphere at all .As i've said the pubs around Skeg seem to change every year.We sat outside the pub almost opposite The Royal Oak , called The Seathorne , a few times last year.They.ve built an outside bar area there but it doesn't serve beer,only lager., I think I had Green King from inside  the pub there. The Three Tuns In Ingoldmells village serves Batemans so The two of us will be going there this year .There's nothing there for kids though, just a lovely pint(and peace and quiet)

I think i only went in the royal oak last year with the kids to go to the toilet as there is mainly only pub toilets open in the evenings. They had karaoke on the evening we went in but i didn't stay long, although it was quite busy that night.

I've been in a few others with @super_ram over the years but you can always tell which ones are his favourites and its mainly based on beer and atmosphere.

We avoid pubs with Karaoke or entertainment etc, we prefer sitting in a quiet corner and having a chat and a decent pint is an absolute must, I have been known to take one look at what beer is on offer and walk out.

We also generally go early doors on the infrequent times we go to a pub. Don't like busy pubs at all.
