  2. Reduced ticket prices on offer for crucial Sky Bet League 1 clash...

Notts County are delighted to announce that ticket prices for adults and children have once again been reduced for our next home game, against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday 22 February.

Having climbed back out of the relegation zone with a 3-0 win at home to Coventry City on Saturday, the club would like to thank those fans that have backed the team this season and are keen to make sure that we take full advantage of a good home support during the run-in to the end of the campaign.

And to help ensure that as many people as possible can make it to Meadow Lane for what promises to be a crucial match against Shrewsbury, the Board of Directors have agreed to cut adult ticket prices to just £15 and under-16 prices to just £3 each.

Hopefully we can get a bumper crowd! Well Done Notts!!

  3. This one is big news today.

Apparently there is not much love lost between these two - and the dislike is not an affectation.

On the one hand you have the charismatic overstated articulate self-admiring showman that is the Chelsea boss; on the other you have the studious, somewhat mumbling, self-effacing Arsenal tactician, whose English is as fractured now as it was when he arrived.

My question is this: which of them do you prefer?

Further to that, if you were to spend an evening in the company of one of them, which would it be?

Would you give the same answer to both questions?

I suppose I should attempt my own question before signing off.

Well, I prefer Wenger because I think he's less likely to say things just for effect

    but

I'd spend my evening with Mourinho because I think he's a riveting conversationalist.

Perhaps if we get 20 or more responses to this we could do a head count.

  4. Crawley v Tranmere------H/D

    Orient v Stevenage------H

    Coventry v Carlisle-----H

Hoping for these results, but football's a funny old game.

  5. Notts County vs Shrewsbury Town this Saturday, will you be in attendance? How many travelling Shrewsbury Town fans do you think will make the trip? Our own?

  6. Can all those who haven't read @super_ram's excellent article on the early history of the FA Cup please do so otherwise you will be accused of procrastination (look it up) and you don't want that. :joker:  It's all about the FA Cup when Super was a lad and they kicked pigs bladders around. :rollonfloorlaughing:

Seriously it is an excellent article and the old boy has obviously taken a lot of time and trouble to write it, I know I couldn't do it, so have a read and see what you think.

  8. the first ever pon notts county hall of fame. Which player deserve a place in pons hall of fame. Vote now past or present

well there is a lot of players who could go in to the hall of fame Steve cherry, Mark Draper the list is endless but my vote is for Tommy johnson.

  9. I believe this is good news for us on two counts.

    1. We love to see that lot get turned over especially by the lowest team left on the competition.

    2. The longer Sheff Utd's cup run lasts the more the players will lose focus on their league plight.

  10. After another PP Crawley seem to be struggling to get all their matches in.

2 schools of thought on this.

One, they will be knackered so fatigue should set in and help us out.

Two, they put a few wins together and the momentum helps push them up the league playing twice a week for a while.

Difficult one to judge as you never can tell at the bottom of the league what will really happen

  11. It's been a interesting month for us all here, having decided to give the former "Member of the Month" @liampie the chance to nominate 6 members for this months, as a reward for continuous effort (secretly I didn't want the tough choice). Liam told me via PM that he was unsure, he didn't feel up to deciding, however I asked until he agreed.:lol:

This month I wanted to do things different, so there's another slight twist to the Member of the Month.

Firstly I'd like to thank each and everyone who's signed in, contributed, looked around and even visited. Without people doing so, the site would grind and for me it's rewarding to see people enjoy the site. So, a huge thank you!

I would also like to note that yesterday we reached the most unique visits in a day! Nearly 650! also, the most online at one time was beaten with 252 (mostly guests). Two achievements impossible without your support!

So here we go - 30 votes later, we have stumbled upon our winner but before I named who that is.

@Canadian - You've contributed a vast amount since you joined us, it's richly deserved and I am happy to say. You're PoN's Bronze MotM (basically 3rd place)

    motmbronze.png

@Joe Jones - Where would I be without you and your articles? I don't know but I do realize that your efforts help the site immensely. Liam said he couldn't believe you had never won this award before, so I think it's safe to say we're both glad that you're named PoN's Silver MotM.

    motmsilver.png

@hissingdwarf my small but very tall friend! You won outright and it's richly deserved. I think the fact that the poll reached 30 votes and 10 of which you received shows how widely your contributions and posts are appreciated. Congrats for being named our Member of the Month for January!!

Please take the time to spread the community spirit and congratulate all 3 members. YOU PIES!

  12. I have now written a brief introductory article about football up to the time of Notts formation in 1862 and will continue with more:-i.e. The formation of the F.A. and Football League and come up to date with, hopefully, interesting and informative articles. I enjoy reading about the history, players, and ups and downs of other clubs. I hope other site member do also and will add their own comments to give us all a better insight into football's rich history. Notts-Joe has asked me to write up about the history of football, not just relating to Notts County.

    Article - Read Here

I know quite a bit about Derby County, and I'm still learning more ,even at my age. I know a fair bit about football in general, including other clubs and I look forward to reading other people views. Your thoughts?

  13. So, what have you all been upto today (or currently plan to do)?

I'm preparing to go out, decided to take the children to the part. It seems like one of those days that you wouldn't want to waste sitting inside and doing only vitual things. The plans to go to Vernon Park, we used to go all the time when Jake was younger but with things the way they are these days it's a little awkward.

Plus the children was looking forward to seeing Granny and Super Ram, with them being at their house. It leaves us with some spare time!

I will of course still be around, though limited compared to normal. When I get back I need to do some admin tasks, along with some other things. YP!

Share what you have been upto/doing. :)

  14. I received this email today, I know not everyone get's these emails so I have (hopefully) uploaded it here.

  15. Apologies if this has been talked about but I read or heard on the radio that McGregor was a bit petulant and showed his displeasure when he was substituted against Wolves on Saturday, Derry said in an interview that he was being immature and he took him off for the good of the team.

I hope that it hasn't soured the relationship between player and manager and it was just a heat of the moment thing.

What do the people who were there think, was Derry right to substitute him or should he have stayed on? What form did the petulance take? Was he right to be annoyed?

    Discuss.

  16. We took our Grandson George to the YMCA Day Camp today, they spend the day there and do all sorts of activities which keeps them occupied and hopefully wears him out. We walked there it is about a mile and all the way he was singing "Its fun to stay at the YMCA" at the top of his voice, this was at 8am in the morning, our street is occupied by mainly  retired people, a lot of curtains were drawn no doubt hoping to have a lie in, goodness knows what they thought.

  17. I get really confused when reading posts that people have quoted, sometimes I can't tell what is the quote and what is the reply, anyone else have this problem? It is particularly bad on the phone app.

My question is @notts-joe is it possible to differentiate better between the quote and the reply? Make the quote a different colour perhaps. When I am quoting a post on the desktop I try to remember to change the colour of the quote myself to make it more readable but you can't do that on the phone app.

  18. Obviously there's a lot of adverse weather around at the minute, so if any of the matches included in the prediction league are postponed or abandoned, they will be void, and no points will be awarded.

    This Saturday's fixtures:
    Doncaster Rovers v Barnsley

    Millwall v Bolton Wanderers

    Crawley Town v Carlisle United

Preston North End v Leyton Orient

    Hartlepool United v Newport County

    Plymouth Argyle v York City

  19. Because it seems to be 1 step forward and 2 steps back. We are gradually running out of games, we can't keep expecting other teams to slip up, can you honestly see us putting a long unbeaten run going. Which is what is needed. Forever hopeful tho.

  20. This subject comes up every season. But surely some thing has to happen?

With the Ladies now coming on to it as well. Are we waiting for the Rugby Club to depart in 2015? I know Mr Trew is not happy with the Contract and i can see a Big boot coming next year.

Quite embarrassing, If we play on a bog with the ladies on TV.........actually Ladies in mud...................;)  :)  :)

  21. Sir Tom Finney: Former Preston and England winger dies at 91

<!--url{0}--> Former Preston and England winger Sir Tom Finney has died at the age of 91.

Finney made more than 400 league appearances for Preston North End between 1946 and 1960 and won 76 caps for England.
    Preston's favourite son
    Sir Tom Finney
    Paul Fletcher BBC Sport

"Preston has lost its favourite son, a man who gave Prestonians pride in the place they come from. It was as though a little of the esteem and respect in which Finney was held rubbed off on all of them.

"My dad always insisted that he knew him. Everyone of his generation did and so I took his words lightly. One day I was walking through the centre of town with my old man when I noticed Finney walking towards us. He looked up as our paths crossed and, with what I am sure to this day was a hint of recognition, looked my dad square in the face and wished him good morning.

"Sir Tom, you will be missed."

    Read Paul Fletcher's tribute

He scored 30 goals for England, placing him joint sixth on the all-time list with Alan Shearer and Nat Lofthouse.

A Preston statement said: "Sir Tom was the greatest player to ever play for Preston North End and one of the all time greats for England."

Preston are due to play Leyton Orient in League One on Saturday at Deepdale.

The statement added: "Preston North End have been informed of the extremely sad news of the passing of Sir Tom Finney.

"The thoughts of everyone at the club, and those connected with it, are with his family at this time."

The Football Association tweeted: "The FA is saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Tom Finney, one of England's all-time greatest players."

Manchester United manager David Moyes knew Finney well during his time playing for, and then managing Preston between 1993 and 2002, owning a framed picture of Finney at his home.

Speaking before Finney's death, Moyes said: "Sir Tom was a great help in the early stages of my management career.

"He had an incredible passion for the game and someone I have great admiration for. There is no doubt he is one of the greatest players but to me he is also a great man."

Sir Tom Finney: a look back at a remarkable life

BBC chief football correspondent Mike Ingham told BBC Radio 5 live: "He was a slight figure but incredibly brave. Former Liverpool manager Bill Shankly considered him to be the greatest player to ever play the game.

"That's all you need to know."

Born in Preston, Finney was named footballer of the year in 1953-54 and 1956-57 and was twice a runner-up in the league with his local club, as well as playing in the 1954 FA Cup final defeat to West Brom.

He was linked with a move to Italian side Palermo in 1952, but Preston chairman Nat Buck quashed the deal, saying: "If tha' doesn't play for us, tha' doesn't play for anybody."
    Twitter reaction

MOTD presenter Gary Lineker: "Sir Tom Finney has left us. One of the greatest players this country has ever seen, and a true gentleman"
MOTD pundit and former Preston winger Kevin Kilbane: "I'm proud to say I grew up on the same street as Sir Tom Finney. Very sad to hear of his passing."
Wolves: "Farewell to one of the game's greats. Rest in peace Sir Tom Finney. A true legend & former team mate and friend of our own Billy Wright."
Chelsea: "Chelsea FC is saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Tom Finney, one of England's all-time greats. Condolences to his family and friends."
West Ham: "Everyone at West Ham United has been deeply saddened by the passing of @pnefc and England great Sir Tom Finney."

In all he scored 187 league goals for North End and was also a qualified plumber in the family business. North End were relegated from the top flight in 1961, a year after Finney retired, and have not returned since.

He played at the 1954 and 1958 World Cup finals with England. Former England and Blackpool defender Jimmy Armfield calling him a "great footballer and a great man".

Speaking in 2012, England's record goalscorer Sir Bobby Charlton called Finney's contribution to football "immeasurable".

Charlton told BBC Sport: "I used to look at him and think, this is fantastic.

"Watching him, you knew full well that the full-backs had had it. He was just too good for them. Occasionally I had the pleasure to play with him and it was the greatest pleasure anyone could ever give me.

"He passed to me on my England debut and I had never been so proud.

"I have so many happy memories of watching him play. His contribution to football is immeasurable."
  22. I see that the Notts County Ladies team have signed two England players.

They are to play their games in the summer months at Meadow Lane (god help the pitch) but there are only 8 in the league they are playing in so they will play 7 homes games, they can't play in black and white stripes because the black block on the back of the shirt somehow clashes with the referees, so they will play in Notts present away shirts.

I'm not sure of admission prices but would you consider going to support the ladies. (No jokes about swapping shirts after the game please).

I think I might give it a go if I wasn't camping or anything it might stave off the feeling of "cold turkey" I get when there is no football. Although having said that there will be the world cup starting in June of course.

  23. Hello, fellow football fans!
