Notts County Bolsters Midfield with Curtis Edwards on Two-Year Deal

PON_News

Cultured midfielder Curtis Edwards has signed with us on a two-year deal.

The 30-year-old has spent much of his career in Sweden and Norway, amassing over 150 top-tier appearances, along with 14 appearances in the Europa League and Champions League.

After concluding the 2023 Norwegian season, during which Edwards shone for top-flight side Stabaek, he returned to the UK and spent the second half of the English campaign with Woking in the National League.

Having made an excellent impression, the Cards, managed by former Magpie Michael Doyle, offered Edwards the opportunity to stay in Surrey. However, he has chosen Meadow Lane as his next destination.

Richard Montague, a board member leading on recruitment, said: "We’re delighted to add a player of Curtis’ calibre to the squad.

"Over his many years in Scandinavia, he established himself as a strong performer at a very high level. He continued to show his immense quality at Woking earlier this year.

"He can play in various midfield roles, providing us with more flexibility and depth, and is a fantastic technician who’s also very hard-working and mobile between both boxes.

"He’s a player fans will really enjoy watching, and we’re excited to give him the platform to bring his talents to the EFL."

Edwards began his career with his hometown club, Middlesbrough. Following his release, he played for several clubs in the local non-league scene.

In 2015, he seized the opportunity to move abroad to play under fellow Teessider Brian Wake at Swedish fifth-tier side Ytterhogdals IK. This proved to be the catalyst for a meteoric rise as Wake recommended him for a friendly with Graham Potter’s Ostersunds, who subsequently signed him.

Edwards quickly established himself as a regular starter for the top-tier side and went on to help them win the Swedish Cup, along with a historic qualification for the Europa League. Edwards played a significant role, including scoring a goal against Athletic Bilbao, in securing their progression from the group stage.

He then played the full 90 minutes in both legs against Arsenal, with an incredible 2-1 victory at the Emirates not quite enough to see the Swedish side through in the round of 32.

Edwards’ memorable stay at Ostersund concluded at the end of his contract in 2019, with Swedish giants Djurgarden winning the hotly-contested race for his signature.

He went on to play his part in his new club winning the title in the first of his three seasons in Stockholm, before crossing the border to help Stabaek achieve promotion to the Norwegian top flight in 2022.

Edwards followed up with another strong season before returning to the UK and becoming one of the National League’s top performers in the latter half of last season.

this is a nice surprise for a signing, someone vastly different but also experienced and that will make the opposition teams we face unsure about curtis edwards. plus he may bring in a different approach or style to his game, which will be a blessing because usually we have players who are very similar. i am delighted with this arrival.

This signing appears to be full of promise and a sturdy replacement for the recently left Jim O’Brien. It’s a fantastic addition and exactly what we require. His wealth of experience will be appreciated by our younger players, like Scott Robertson. It’s a practical signing that will bring a unique element to crucial matches. I’m eager to see him in action.

Curtis Edwards is a competent player who has built his career abroad. His signing has taken me by surprise, but considering our ambitions and the peak of his career, it makes sense. Settling in Nottingham or returning to England seems like a logical step.

What a fantastic addition to the squad! Curtis Edwards’ journey from non-league football to becoming a key player in Scandinavian leagues is truly inspiring. His experience in the Europa League and his performances show his calibre. Not only is he a versatile midfielder, but his hard-working nature and technical skills will undoubtedly bolster our team. I trust our management and recruitment teams have made a thoughtful choice here. It’s going to be thrilling to see how he fits in with the rest of the squad.

These quality signings keep coming thick and fast for Notts. What a few weeks we have had on the transfer front, & the players that Notts are recruiting are exactly the type of players Notts needed.

Curtis Edwards is a midfielder that can play in a variety of positions & will strengthen Notts's midfield options.

Curtis has experience of playing in the Europa League, & has been involved in Championship winning sides abroad.

Notts have clearly been able to sign a quality player in Curtis. I am sure he will also become one of the leaders on the pitch too.

Notts have played very smart with these signings and we are going to witness a lot of competition for places, because the players we have brought in will not want to be making up the numbers on the substitute bench for long.

All the types of players I have been asking for, Notts have duly obliged. If we can bring in a right wing back that would complete the team jigsaw for me.

I'm chuffed to bits about us getting Curtis Edwards on board. The lad's got a solid history in the Swedish and Norwegian leagues, with more than 150 top-tier games under his belt. That's no small feat, it tells you he's got the chops and he's steady as a rock.

He's had a taste of the big time in the Europa League too, even had a go against Arsenal. Shows he can hold his own with the best of them. It's a real feather in our cap, attracting players with that kind of experience.

I reckon his technical know-how and his ability to mix it up will give our midfield a proper boost. Hats off to the folks upstairs for pulling off this signing. I'm all agog to see Curtis do his thing for Notts County.
