Notts County to prise 'unhappy' Paul Hurst from Grimsby?

Joe Jones

Notts County are reportedly still hoping to appoint Paul Hurst as their new manager after the Grimsby Town boss criticised a number of his side's supporters following their play-off final victory.

The Mariners overcame Mark Cooper's Forest Green Rovers at Wembley, their 3-1 victory seeing them return to the Football League after a six-year absence.

Hurst has come under fire from some supporters this season, which included a "Hurst Out" banner being hung over a flyover after their play-off semi-final first leg defeat to Braintree Town.

And even after winning promotion, the Grimsby boss took the opportunity to criticise those fans, insisting "there were some here (at Wembley) who have been out of order throughout the season".

Should Notts move for Hurst ahead of current favourite Martin Allen, they would be required to pay compensation to the Mariners for his services.

I don't see Martin Allen returning, I'll keep saying this but I'd love to see him back at Meadow Lane. I think Notts know just how much someone like him could win over fans again, plus he knows League Two well.

Paul Hurst is okay, out of a bad bunch - he does stand out for the right reasons.

I'm not sold on Hurst, but I'd prefer him to some of the other names mentioned.

I was a bit puzzled as to why some Grimsby fans are negative towards PH, so I did some research on their forum. The best I could find is that he's dour, doesn't come over well in interviews, doesn't appear passionate (who cares? We want a manager not a performing chimp) and that the team was "limping into the play-offs" (how awful for them). It reminded me of some of the criticism of Keith Curle back when we had a team that would absolutely wipe the floor with the one we have today.

OK, he's no Ranieri or Mourinho in interviews, but Hursty is successful, Mariners fans must be moronic not to realise that, it'd serve him right if Notts do poach him, but before long, Hurst may realise what true unhappiness is.....(sorry guys)
