Match Report: Notts County come from behind to overcome Colchester United

Joe Jones

Notts County came from a goal down to record a 3-1 win at Colchester United that keeps their League Two playoff hopes alive and kicking.

The Magpies endured a poor first half, falling behind on nine minutes when Drey Wright exchanged passes with Ben Stevenson, slicing through the visitors' defence, before slotting low past Adam Collin from close range.

In the 17th minute, Colchester came close again when Mikael Mandron picked up Ben Stevenson’s smart pass and ran at the visitors’ defence before drilling a low shot straight at Collin.

Kane Vincent-Young, Wright and Mandron all weighed in with efforts against Notts, who had Jonathan Forte's goal ruled out on 25 minutes for a push by Shaun Brisley on Luke Prosser following a corner.

The U's almost doubled their lead just after the break when Tom Eastman divered Mandron's header onto the foot of the post.

Three minutes later, Notts dragged themselves level when Forte squeezed a low shot past Sam Walker after Shaun Brisley had done well to keep the ball alive from Tootle’s cross.

Ameobi then fired the visitors into the lead with 21 minutes remaining, finishing off after Forte and Matty Virtue tested the opposition keeper.

The game was then killed off with 14 minutes remaining when Richard Duffy rose to head home Dan Jones's free kick into the area.

Ready to leave at half-time with Notts looking like they just didn't care. Lots of hoof-ball; a goalie that kicked straight to the opposition - every single time; Noble (apparently) 'forgetting' which side he was on and a 'defence' that...well, didn't exist.

Don't know what 'wise words' KN had to say at half-time but it did the trick. Phenomenal difference, second-half, with our pre-Christmas FIGHTERS back on the field.

Virtue, hardworking, unrelenting and unlucky not to get three; Duffy, playing like I've rarely seen this year and getting a superb goal; Toots, a total Warrior, who WANTED the win; Shola (PLEASE D-O-N-O-T-R-E-T-I-R-E UNTIL THE OPPOSITION STOP FEARING YOU!) doggedly got stuck in; Forte, (we'd-be-in-Top-3-if-he'd-started-all-season) worked hard for his goal, with a determination that'll see him move in the Summer with a fantastic track record for us (just a shame he's not been 'allowed' to start more games...and well, EVERYONE, showing what they CAN do, when it matters. Even Collins (I think I'm, perhaps, his biggest critic!) made some great saves and ended-up looking like a proper goalie- with a mind of his own! Just wish Grant could find the form that earned him early season goals...the lad still has some magic touches but looks 'lost' a lot of the time, now.

Exciting times these are...Statins at the ready for a (please, God) truly magical finish to a bumpy Season.

Could only comment on the highlights this week Lozzle and of course they may have been biased but it looked like we were lucky yesterday? Will of course take heart from your first hand analysis.

i think you’ll need more than statins my friend......😊

The first half was dire and I feared the worst but, as Lozzle said, we saw the return of our pre-Christmas fighters in the second half to turn it around. Once we get our foot on the ball (as opposed to the clueless hoofball of the first half) we have some talented players who can cause the opposition all kinds of problems. In the end it was a great win against a decent side, and it gives us the chance to potentially bag our place in the play-offs at Meadow Lane next weekend.

I agree on Grant too, he's still worthy of a shirt but he hasn't been quite the same since January.
