Keith Curle: Notts County wants Championship striker

<!--url{0}--> Notts County manager Keith Curle says he wants value for money as he bids for a Championship quality striker on transfer deadline day.

The Magpies missed out on former Ipswich Town forward Jason Scotland, who instead joined Barnsley last week.

But Curle told BBC Nottingham that he is still hopeful of making a bargain price addition to his squad.

"That shows the type of quality we want to bring in - we want a player with Championship ability," Curle said.

"We were hopeful of getting Jason Scotland, but unfortunately the finances were not correct for both parties and he has gone to Barnsley and scored his first goal in the Championship to help them out."

Magpies chairman Ray Trew has agreed to invest more money despite posting on a fans' messageboard earlier this month that he could not spend more to back their League One promotion push because of salary restrictions.

"At the minute it is not about the amount of money, but about the availability of the money," Curle said.

"I had a conversation with Ray and he said to identify the targets and give them to Jim (chief executive Jim Rodwell) and if there is a financial deal that can be done that fits in the salary, then we will try to do everything to sign them.

"We are mindful when someone is prepared to put their hand in their pocket to give you the money that you are striving for, we are not going to waste it."

Its good that Curle wants a championship striker, it also shows that Joe was right for writing the article regarding Jason Scotland (Its a shame that finances were not correct for both parties). Its also a positive that we're not trying to waste money.

Yes, I would still like to add we have alternative options too however a championship striker would be very nice. (Just doesn't mean that he has to be playing their currently) :D

I would hope we see how Oldham's Jose Baxter and Yeovil's Paddy Madden are signs that there are bargains to be found which I am sure out scout(s) are doing. I have no idea who or if we will sign anyone but I have been watching out for rumours. I'm glad that this will be handled in the right way too, as we wouldn't want to over-do our finances.

Jason Scotland would of been nice in my opinion but I don't think we would compete with a championship side offering probably more wages and first time opportunities.

Anybody have a rumour that is new to us?

Re paddy madden, I can't believe Carlisle sent him out on loan, given the season he is having, surely they could have used him.  Seeing as he's signed a 2 half year contract with Yeovil, I can't see us getting him, also Baxter has signed an extended contract at Oldham.

It's a strange one for sure.

I know it's not realistic that we would sign either but I live and dream. I think they're prove that there are players out there that don't have what some may consider to be experience and yet have done very well for there respected teams. I hope Waite will be featured at some point :) It was mentioned he did well pre-season so it would be nice but we could do with an experienced striker too.

I dont think we'll bring anybody in tonight. As much as the fans love to see a deadline day signing I'm not too bothered. Yeah it'd be nice to bring in a new striker but I wouldn't want them playing for our club unless they really wanted to be here. How many times do we hear about us being on the verge of signing someone before a championship club comes in, offers them more money and takes them away?

I'd rather not have someone here just because we offered them most money.

Think there's more chance of us bringing someone in on loan like we did last season

The problem is every teams fans want the same thing-a superman type who will score 30 goals or any player who will majically guarantee promotion.Unfortunately finances dictate.

I agree 100 per cent with that. Strikers that can get you 20 goals a season are in high demand so the club that pays the most will sign them. We had such a player in Lee Hughes but let him go!

You will never know if he was even looking for loan players now, but i do think if he was going to sign a new striker he should of sorted it out before the deadline.

I hope a new manager is found soon.
