How do we determine success?

Each season we have our minds set on what we hope for and realistically see happening, but there seems to be a massive difference in determining success.

How do you make this call?

I think to a level some fans are just thickle, as is the nature of the sport nowadays. No direct digs but the judgement of success seems to be based on winning games alone and not much else. Just my view, feel free to disagree.

Success to me means progress. After last seasons great escape II we should have gathered some momentum and at the start of this season we did. However 3 wins in 24 games since November is woeful and certain relegation form. It went to the wire last year and will do so again this. On that basis, even if we survive the drop it cannot be classed as a success. If we had a steady 15th -16th place and were a few points clear I would have taken that, after last season.

I guess it all depends on the targets set outright by the board and balancing the expectations of the fans.

If a manager is told to avoid relegation and he does, that for me signals success and if within the following season the clubs 'stabilized', perhaps either succeeding expectations, meeting them bang or or slightly being under. Again, for me this would be success. It's not all about winning, success can be found within building blocks and it really does make a difference.

When you manage a team that's expected to win the league, then winning at a ratio is where that sort of success comes into it.

We are not in that boat.

To a level I think we are finding some moderate forms of success, with establishing youngsters and the work going into building the academy. Doing well at the start of the season and of course after last season, just surviving for me is success because we lost a hell of a load of players. We didn't miss some at the start of the season but we sure do now.

For me simply being comfortable in this league, who cares, a few seasons of mid table mediocrity would do me... especially right now

Well, yeah you have to comfortable but survival for me is a big benefactor of success. Anything seen as a failure, will not do.

All the rest is forms of success.

Success for Notts County would be to keep a manager for a whole season, most of our younger fans haven't seen a manager last a whole season yet

Is it easier to judge seasons as a failure?

I recall the year we narrowly missed out on the playoff and for me that was a successful season. Yet, it seemed to be deemed as a failure and Curle was sacked at a stage where he should not have been.

Clever response, I am with Ivan on this. Attendance's increasing would show a level of success.

Success is - the opposite of failing! I'd go for progress;

* improved results and League position

* preferably in and around play offs, or better

* increased attendances

* more good performances than cr@p ones

* winning consecutive games at home!

That would do for starters over the next couple of seasons. Having a manager who is up to the job would help, that would be a major improvement on some of the absolute garbage we have employed recently. If Kiwomya ever manages again it willbe a miracle and I doubt Ince, Curle or Derry will ever amount to much either.

Top ten or better and maybe a good cup run would be acceptable at this level. Good football, good home form, bigger crowds and a flirt with the play-offs. The trouble with mid-table mediocrity is that you're only ever a poor run away from a relegation scrap.

 

In L2, nothing less than a play-off place would do. At least that would give us some excitement and keep crowds up. A return to the pre-Munto days would be a disaster.

In/Out of the playoffs and a good (any) cup run is the dream. Scrapping above but beating relegation for 2 seasons then flirting with playoffs is achievable with the right manager and Ray coughing a little.

A win tomorrow will do for now
