Notts County Racism Storm

This report from the Daily Mirror. If this is at all true it is absolutely disgusting and the club have done the right thing in getting rid of the two people concerned in my opinion.

Notts County racism storm: Two coaches quit as the club investigates
allegations made by trainees

It was claimed a banana was thrown at one young black player, while racist
comments were also alleged to have been made

Two Notts County coaches have quit the club after allegations of racist
behaviour.
The claims were made by two trainees at the League One side, who made
official complaints.
They were backed up by several other trainees, both black and white.
One of the allegations was that one coach, Brett Adams, had thrown a
banana - with “f*** off†written on it - to a black youth player and then
said: “F*** off and eat it.â€
It was also claimed that Lead Foundation coach Lee Broster walked into a
changing room while the players were listening to rap music and said: “No
wonder you black lads always go around stabbing people when you listen to
music like that.â€
Broster is also alleged to have walked into a room, switched off a light and
said: “Make sure you black lads smile so I can see you.â€
The club launched a full investigation after the protests were made to them
last month.
They found that the black complainants had the backing of their white
colleagues.
In statements, one player claims to have been shocked at what he had
witnessed.
A hearing was convened by the club last week and, after a second hearing on
Friday, the club announced the two coaches had left.
A statement said: “Brett Adams and Lee Broster have resigned from their
positions at the club as Youth Coach and Lead Foundation Coach
respectively.
“We thank them for their service and wish them every success for the
future.â€
Prior to Friday’s hearing, a Notts County spokesman told Mirror Sport:
“Unfortunately, as the questions that you have raised relate to an on-going
employment issue, the club are unable to make any comment on the matter at
the current time.â€

Two meetings were held between the trainees and the club’s HR manager,
Chantelle Gibson, to discuss the allegations, on April 2 and April 18.
In statements, one player expresses his concern that he could be released
for speaking out but is willing to risk it as he feels the treatment he is
receiving is unacceptable.
Ironically, Notts County’s manager, Chris Kiwomya, is black. There is no
suggestion however that he is aware of any of the incidents.
Adams and Broster were unavailable for comment.

I had just been looking through the latest news on the web and came across this article  so obviously then came straight here to see if there was anything up yet.

As you say Tony, absolutely disgusting. There is no place for this kind of behaviour anywhere.Notts havedone the right thing

I hope this is the end of the affair, we dont want any 'muck raking' just for the sake of it.

I did wonder why they hadn't sacked them rather than let them resign but I read elsewhere that if they had sacked them they would have had to pay them off under the terms of their contract and could be liable to a charge of unfair dismal, so asking them to resign is a better option.

Good riddance (assuming the article is correct).

It comes as a bit of a shock when its your team involved in unsavoury news. It does put clubs in a very difficult position. They have to be very careful how the situation is handled as you have already pointed out. It seems to me that the laws in place to protect people are too easily used in the wrong way.

Racism is just another form of bullying and any kind of bullying cannot be tolerated.

I hope this is the end of the matter.

Hear, hear to good riddance.

We've had better coaches, I wished we'd get Michael Johnson back but our lose seems someone else's gain. He's at Birmingham now? Never liked Brett, I hated how he would flaunt himself before home games and shout down his phone. Often heard him saying to someone on the other end he didn't like certain players or they're not good enough, get rid. Never seemed acceptable to me!

This is just a complete joke, shouldn't happen and looks bad for the club.

I know a few who wondered what happened to him, I recall reading tweets he made before it disappeared. Seems things are good at this, though it's no loss. Youth players need a role model not his type (even before this I would have said this).

Well done to the white lads who spoke out and backed up what their mates were saying, it must have been hard for all the young lads to bring this to the attention of the powers that be.

Yes very true, shows a good unit.

Never easy at any age sticking up against a majority or matter where you could unfairly lose your job, glad that they did.

It's only a bit of fun.Don't be so 'mardy'. They can take it.They're useless anyway

No its bullying

I agree with Tony and Joe,well done to the lads who refused stand by and see their mates be bullied even though they themselves may have suffered.

I was told to keep quiet but now its out I suppose I can say now I was told about this around a fortnight ago. A friend of mine up in Nottingham knows one of the youth lads, and apparently Brett Adams threw a bannanain the direction of a black youth player and shouted "**** off and eat that you lazy ****". Weather thats been exagerated or not I dont know.

No space for racism in football especially considering the way the game has been tarnished over the past two seasons. I'm confident Notts County FC will take the neccesary steps against the two coaches. I'm sure those that spoke out wont be sacked, if they are then quite frankly that looks even worse on the club.

I do hope the good name of our club isn't tarnished too badly by this story, after all we do have a lot of black players and a black manager and I'd be very shocked and saddened if they had been the victims of any racial abuse from staff at the club

James

Its ridiculous how it got this far before they left. I was wondering why they left instead of getting sacked but then now i know reading the comments above. Very good of the other players for speaking out about it all. I find its very strange how companies can sack people for speaking out especially about things like this, but i hope the club don't in this incident.

It seems the Society of Black Lawyers have reported the incident to Nottinghamshire Constabulary and want the two coaches arrested and charged. Quite right in my opinion.

Meanwhile the PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor has said he is satisfied with the way that Notts County dealt with the allegations.

Yes, I hope they're punished for their behaviour.

Losing their jobs is nothing, they need it branding and made to face upto what they did. It's not the same for some crimes, so why do some get off without learning a lesson? I wonder how Brett feels now, since he's the subject of discussion?

Have to say the club do seem to have handled the situation rather well, at least we havent gone printing tee-shirts in their defence for a start

Not too sure what the Sociaty of Black Lawyers feel the need to get involved but they do my nut in anyway, bet they'd soon kick off if there was a sociaty of white lawyers but thats a whole other debate.

Does beg the question who will the club bring in to look after everything to do with the youth team though. It's no secret the youth lads have made absolutely magnifficent progress over the last few years so I really hope that dosn't all go down the drain.

James

Should be no room for racism at any club. I suppose to a degree most clubs have aspects of this going on. Not everyone has the inclination to stand up and blow the whistle.
