League One/Two wage cap

So it seems that clubs in the lower divisions are getting their acts together and introducing a wage cap. 2.5 million for squads in League One and 1.5 million for League Two, with players under 21 to be exempted.

It seems a good idea, but the devil will be in the detail. The limits do seem rather low (I remember Notts spending more than 2.5 million in L1, and we had a wage bill of 3 million when we got relegated from L2). On the one hand that obviously good. On the other, the better-supported clubs like Portsmouth would be transformed into profit-making enterprises, making them irresistable for all manner of shysters.

When it comes to Notts, I wonder if we're already spending more than the 1.5 million for L2 (as we went spending double that when we went down it seems likely). Would we be forced to have a fire sale if we went up?

What do you all make of it?

Honestly, when I heard about this the other day - I just felt like wage caps should come from the very top down.

Football clubs need to learn how to turn a profit, it's possible with smart management of finances but its a strict process which most clubs can't control well as they crave better success, and have pressure from their fan base.

Not many clubs do turn a profit, however, there's some that everyone could learn from such as Leicester City (who I believe annually turn a profit).

One idea that I have thought about for many years, is FIFA regulating a pay grade of footballers. It's not likely to ever happen, players like Wayne Rooney in their prime will still receive the riches they believe that they deserve.

The issue with clubs operating under a wage cap for me, is that it should be based on the revenue that comes in making the Financial Fair Play rules much stricter.

Without such implications I believe a wage cap will only make smaller clubs struggle to become bigger, yes, I see the benefits of ensuring no club would rack up debits if they can only spend ex on wages - however, agent fees need to be taken into account.

Personally, I think football agents need to be kicked out of the game.

A field where dreams become reality.

i think it makes sense that a wage cap is introduced because it would save clubs from losing money, which is a good step in the right direction. it would give clubs some more control, as it would force players to accept fair offers if they want to remain a professional.
