Match Report: Notts County Fall in Dramatic Penalty Shootout After Six-Goal Thriller Against Shrewsbury Town

PON_News

Notts County's League Cup journey ended in heart-wrenching fashion as they were knocked out by Shrewsbury Town in a 4-3 penalty shoot-out following a gripping 3-3 draw after 90 minutes. The Magpies showed great determination and spirit, but ultimately, it was the home side that held their nerve in the penalties, leaving County fans wondering what might have been.

The match kicked off with Notts County asserting their dominance early on. Within just four minutes, Conor Grant capitalised on a perfectly delivered cross from Jodi Jones to head home from close range, giving the Magpies a dream start. This early strike set the tone for a first half in which Notts County were in control, showcasing their attacking intent and technical superiority.

Their dominance was further reflected in the possession stats, with Notts County enjoying 59.7% of the ball compared to Shrewsbury's 40.3%. County's pressing and ball retention were key features of the first half, and they were rewarded again in the 23rd minute when Sam Austin doubled the visitors' lead. David McGoldrick played a crucial role in the build-up, providing the assist for Austin, who finished clinically into the bottom corner, giving Shrewsbury's goalkeeper no chance.

As the first half drew to a close, Notts County looked to be cruising, with their defence largely untroubled by Shrewsbury’s sporadic attacks. However, the second half saw a resurgent Shrewsbury Town side come out with renewed vigour. The home team knew they had to change the tempo of the game, and that they did, mounting pressure on Notts County's backline.

In the 68th minute, the pressure told. Joshua Kayode latched onto a loose ball inside the box and managed to squeeze his shot past the goalkeeper from a difficult angle, reducing the deficit to 2-1. The goal ignited the home crowd and lifted Shrewsbury, who suddenly looked the more likely to score. Just three minutes later, they found an equaliser. Jordan Shipley, who had been a threat throughout, rose highest to nod in a cross from Tommi O'Reilly, levelling the score at 2-2.

The momentum had shifted dramatically, and Shrewsbury capitalised further in the 84th minute when Shipley scored his second of the match. This time, it was a well-placed header into the bottom corner following a cross from Jordan Rossiter, leaving Notts County reeling as they saw their two-goal lead evaporate.

However, Notts County showed resilience and refused to be beaten. With just a minute of normal time remaining, Alassana Jatta met Dan Crowley’s corner with a powerful header to make it 3-3, sending the game to penalties.

During the intense shoot-out, Notts County was faced with a gruelling test of their nerves. Dan Crowley, Cedwyn Scott, and Alassana Jatta all converted their penalties, but the turning point came when David McGoldrick's effort sailed just over the bar, followed by Curtis Edwards’ penalty being saved by the Shrewsbury goalkeeper. Despite their best efforts, Notts were ultimately undone by the precision of Shrewsbury’s Malvind Benning, who converted the decisive penalty to win the tie 4-3 on penalties.

The statistics tell a story of what could have been for Notts County. They registered 12 shots compared to Shrewsbury’s 7, but only three of these were on target. Shrewsbury, on the other hand, made the most of their opportunities, with five of their seven shots forcing a save. Notts County also had the upper hand in corners, winning eight to Shrewsbury’s five, and they dominated possession. However, they lacked the clinical edge needed in front of goal.

The Magpies' discipline was also on display, committing just five fouls and receiving only one yellow card, compared to Shrewsbury's 13 fouls and two bookings. Despite these positives, the result was a bitter pill to swallow.

As the final whistle blew, Notts County could only reflect on a match that slipped away in dramatic fashion. Their time in the League Cup may be over, but the determination and fight they showed will give fans hope for the rest of the season. The focus now turns back to the league, where the Magpies will look to bounce back from this disappointing exit.

i am not to dishearten by it, we did well to get back into the game. we made mistakes to gift our lead but we worked hard to take it in the first place. i think going to penalties is always a lottery and yes, we should have maintained the lead, but they are a league one side. jatta shows up at the right time, having scored now we can focus on sunday.

Let's take the positives. I think Mark Stallard is right about the subs influencing the game, and it makes sense when Stall explained it's to get minutes in for the players coming on. I think Stuart Maynard will learn from this, maybe bring them on gradually and not three in one go, especially when under pressure. Credit to Shrewsbury for turning the game on its head, plus I am pleased for Jatta that it was him who sent us to penalties.

It simply wasn’t to be. I think we can go into our next league game with more confidence. While I would have loved to see another clean sheet, defensively, we can see there are still improvements. In a league game, it might be different. I think it’s sometimes hard for players coming on to match the standard of performance of those already involved. Yes, I am disappointed we didn’t win. We could have made the second round via penalties, but I won’t let it change the good feeling we have after Tranmere.

Notts played brilliantly in the first half. As good as the first half was, the exact opposite was true in the second half.

Notts lost their way somewhat and gave away sloppy goals before Jatta came to the rescue late in the game.

Maynard's three substitutions didn't help either.

Notts could easily have won that match if Maynard had played his best 11 from the start.

Treating the match as a training game really does annoy, when there is a good chance of winning and moving on to the next round.

I just think modern Managers need to change their mindset and treat cup games as any other competitive game.

Play to win every time.

Tuesday night, away from home. It was great to see Notts take the lead by two goals. I think we should have maintained that, but we had the chance to win on penalties. I don’t agree with any criticism towards David McGoldrick or Curtis Edwards for missing. It’s difficult, and while we should have done better in the actual game, I am still proud of the showing. I just wish we had weathered the storm Shrewsbury threw at us as they grew into the second half.

What a heartbreaking end to the League Cup! We played exceptionally well in the first half. Just disappointed we couldn't hold on to the lead.

A rollercoaster of emotions in that match!

Notts started brilliantly, dominating the first half and taking an early lead. The turnaround in the second half was tough to watch, but credit to Shrewsbury for taking their chances. When Jatta scored to level it at 3-3, I thought we had it in the bag.

Penalty shootouts are always a bit of a lottery, and unfortunately, luck wasn’t on our side this time. Despite the defeat, there are many positives to take forward. Our attacking play was top-notch, and we created enough chances to win the game outright. Let’s regroup and focus on the league now.

The game was thrilling, but losing on penalties was tough. Our first-half performance was strong, but we couldn’t maintain it. Shrewsbury’s comeback tested us. Despite the loss, we controlled possession and created chances. Let’s focus on the league.

Such a tough way to be knocked out of the cup! Notts started so brightly, and the first-half goals were superb. It looked like we had the game in the bag, controlling possession and dictating play. The second half was challenging as Shrewsbury came back strong, and unfortunately, our defence couldn’t hold out. The penalty shootout was a tense affair, and it’s always a gamble. I think our team can hold their heads high despite the result. The effort and determination shown were commendable, and there are plenty of positives to build on. We must stay focused and aim to channel this performance into our league games. The season is long, and there will be more opportunities.

Notts’ early dominance was a joy to watch, with Grant and Austin scoring quickly. Shrewsbury’s second-half comeback caught us off guard. Jatta’s late equaliser gave hope, but we lost on penalties. Despite the loss, our lads showed heart and quality.

Notts dominated the game in the first half, they were resolute at the back and exciting going forward, I said at half time that Shrewsbury would be a different team in the second half and it proved to be as they turned the match on its head but we still did well and showed good fighting spirit to equalise through Jatta, it’s just a shame the penalties didn’t work out for us.

I'm not sure some of the comments on social media are fair. It makes Notts look like we've got fans who can't handle losing. Sometimes, you just have to accept it for what it is—we crumbled, but still put in a decent performance.

The trouble is, Stuart didn't treat this match as a serious competitive match, he treated it as a game purely to give his second string game time. Slocombe, for example

He's simply not good enough at this level but Stuart continues to play him.

I don't believe that. I think he did make the changes, but it was to balance the squad. He should have made fewer changes, but he's trying to give everyone some time on the pitch. It was a bad decision, but some fans swearing and complaining doesn't reflect the actual performance. If we win, people are happy; if we draw in a hard-fought match, the defence gets praised. But we lose on penalties in the League Cup, and some fans act like we didn't even try, or that getting personal with the players is justified.

Although with Slocombe in goal, we were more likely to have the numbers for the National Lottery
