Matchday Traditions: What Works for You?

What makes supporting Notts County at Meadow Lane so special? The history or the passion or the sense of belonging? Each person enjoys the club for their own reasons. It is pleasant to listen to various viewpoints.

When you're at the game, are you always doing something prior to the kick-off? Maybe an afternoon pub visit, a meal nearby, or a meeting of other fans beforehand before heading down into the stands.

For a few fans, the build-up is half the fun as watching the match itself, an anticipation of the atmosphere and the game in general.

Notts fandom is an emotional rollercoaster, highs and lows and all the rest. Your experience likely had something unique that stood out. It could have been the loud noise from the crowd, the friendly atmosphere among supporters or the excitement of watching the team perform. Each fan values the matchday experience differently.

Let's discuss how we all get the best out of the atmosphere and the matchday rituals. What do you do, and how does it make you love Notts?

It's difficult since COVID; I find myself quite anxious, and I struggle a lot. It depends on the situation, but last season I took a more relaxed approach. My friend Mark and his partner Katrina attended games; he gives me a lift, and it helps, as before I used to rely on public transport.

We tend to have something to eat before, @super_pie loves having Burger King, KFC, and Subway right near the ground.

After we have something to eat, we walk to the ground, and I try to see if I can notice anyone. I try to say hello, as I feel rude if I go past people, but again, since COVID, it's not always very easy, especially with large amounts of people. If we pop in the club shop, usually it's just to see what sales are on, etc. After that, we go to the Magpie Brewery for a drink and await the grounds opening.

When I take photos, I always try to sit at the front and soak up some of the atmosphere. I miss knowing where friends and regulars would sit, as in recent years people have moved around and it's more spread out. I love the atmosphere when everyone comes in spirit, and it can massively help if Notts doesn't play all that well. Though I would say football is generally good to watch from a tactical point of view, even if the performances are off.

I love away games due to the togetherness we have amongst ourselves, and when this vibe is present at Meadow Lane, it is brilliant.

I usually go to the Navi or the Embankment pub for a drink before the match. I only have one unless I’m meeting up with others. I try to get into the ground before the queues start building up. I’ve had a look around The Nest, but it’s not really for me. I’d only go there if I was meeting people, but I do like that we have a place where fans can gather in large numbers and the profits go directly to the club.

I’m not keen on how the MLSB has changed in recent years. It doesn’t feel like a place to have a drink anymore, more like somewhere to mess around before a game. A good atmosphere can make matches more enjoyable, and I like the bigger games, like Grimsby and Chesterfield.

I go straight to the game, so I only set off when it’s close to the ground opening. I do enjoy walking around the KOP, seeing who I know and checking if people have turned up for the match. There is a social side to the games that I like, but the football is always the main event, even if it’s not the prettiest.

i tend to go straight in and i time it before the queues start to form, only exception is if i am meeting up my dad and uncle. or at times with @TheSkipper or @CliftonMagpie. once inside i dont really mind how busy it gets, it feels like we are all behind the club the moment the game starts to build up.
