Match Discussion: League Two - Tranmere Rovers (A)

What a great comeback, I didn't see it coming at all after a first half in which both sides were equally dire. The subs had a positive impact (both Jatta and Gordon were involved in the winner) and McDonald's block when we were under the kosh was as good as a goal.

Leaving both Dennis and Jatta on when we were under pressure took real courage when many managers would have replaced Dennis with a defensive player.

Am I the only one who thinks the home goalkeeper was an absolute clown? He stayed down after the collision before our winner in the hope of winning a free kick...

Given Tranmere's current form, our Magpies will need every ounce of tactical acumen to navigate this match. Their unbeaten home streak and physical playstyle often create hurdles for teams like us who

I didn’t go to the match, but I was glad to see that we won. I didn’t expect much, so it was a nice surprise. It’s good to read that Notts handled a physical side well, even if the other team wasn’t that strong. That kind of game can still be tricky, so it’s a positive sign.

I know the whole no shots thing first half wasn’t great but at the same time Tranmere really didn’t look a threat either and they only scored through our needless sloppy play.

Our reaction was good though and I thought the second half performance was very impressive. I liked how we didn’t just sit back when defending the lead, we were definitely a lot more pro-active off the ball which I really did like. Even in the last minutes of the match when the Tranmere defence had the ball we had Dennis, Jatta and Grant all pressing hard and they were backed up by the wingbacks and midfield. I think we’ll create some good chances just from making opposition defenders/midfielders rush when on the ball.

Set pieces still make me nervous, I think we got a tad lucky at times. Yes, some good blocks in there and you definitely need that but we still aren’t great when it comes to clearing the ball it all seems a bit panic stations to me.

You can laugh now it’s over but Martin Paterson was getting really wound up at the end of the match about the ref not blowing for full-time. Stoppage time is and has been “a minimum of…” for as long as I can remember, so if the 4th official displays 5 minutes but 6 minutes are played that is completely within the rules.

Anyway, I seem to be able to find more positives with each passing match now, my optimism levels are growing!

Paterson handled things well after the break, making the right decision to bring Gordon on for Cotter, who had a tough first half. The switch paid off straight away, with Gordon looking lively and finishing with real confidence. Dennis also deserves credit, he’s got a knack for being in the right spot and is quickly becoming a key part of the team. Tranmere did push us late on, but we stayed calm, which hasn’t always been the case in past games.

Roos made a vital save near the end, and the back line looked more settled than usual. All in all, it was a solid showing away from home and should give the lads a boost going into the next set of matches.

I would say it was the best performance so far this season. Tranmere were quite happy to allow us to play, and it felt more like a League One game. I did think they were very poor defensively, but on the break, especially those quick counters where they outnumbered us, it made me nervous. At least until they had two or three attempts and blasted them into the away end, nowhere near the goal.

Until they took the lead, I honestly thought it would be us who would score before anything came from them as a serious threat.

It was a sucker-punch moment, which seemed to drop the lad's head, but despite this, I thought we ended the first half somewhat encouragingly with how we played. I also can't stand Josh Davison. His attempts to fool the referee were very frustrating, and a lot of Tranmere Rovers players tried to play the dirty side of football. Relentless pushing, aggressive diving, and careless elbow jabs. I was pleased that we gave it back when we could, I think it was Jacob Bedeau who left a little on a challenge he faced, which caused the tackling Tranmere player to rethink that antic.

In the second half, Notts played some beautiful football, and we did look keen to get on the scoresheet.

While it wasn't perfect, it was a huge step forward in terms of performance, and having seen the majority of games, I thought if things had clicked, we could have thrashed them. I do give credit to Tranmere for keeping the pressure on us; their final 10–15 minutes made it difficult viewing.

Jake also said to me, "We are awful at time-wasting," and we really are. I don't condone it to the point where you look like Newport, or some of the sides we have seen this season, but sometimes you have to take the pressure off defending by running the clock down.

Upon the whistle blowing, my first thoughts were to upload the full-time match graphic and then look around to see the fans reaction. It does become a bit depressing when you see fans unhappy or those who let frustration get the better of them. It was great to see the celebrations and the players returning to properly celebrate in front of us, especially with the Tranmere players watching.
