Hasn't the groupthink on Kelle Roos got out of hand? He really hasn't been that bad.

Yes, his first few games were shaky in general. He made 1 awful passing out gaffe which led to the concession of a goal. That can happen to any keeper, as we see in the premiership, week in week out. 1 of those in 12 games isn't a disaster, Slocs for one will know that. 2 in quick succession can cost a keeper his place....3 in a season might be the limit

But I don't think it's that - during his shaky first few games he dropped a couple of high balls. No damage was done, but this can really trigger certain fans. A bit like a button on a baby's toy, or revealing your face from behind your hands can trigger a baby :) And once those fans get that idea in their heads, objectivity flies out of the window.

In reality though, if you discount the first 4 or 5 games, when he might have been pretty nervous and unfamiliar with everybody, I think he's been fine in these last 6 or 7 games. It's even refreshing how quickly and decisively he releases the ball. I don't mind the punching at all, that might help launch a counter attack as well.

Nobody knows how it will work out for him over the season, but surely he deserves fans' support. Can't everyone see the progress over the course of the first dozen games?

I don't get to watch every minute of every game so if he's improving that's good and yes let's get behind him.

His stats do need to improve as currently it's looking like a massive downgrade. He's saved 65% of shots on target (13th best in L2). Last year Bass saved 74% (2nd best). Over a season that projects to 13 more goals let in, a big handicap.

Of course we should be looking for continuous improvement in all of our players.

That's where squad competition comes in. All the squad players want to see their name on the starting eleven team sheet.

Results are improving because of the competitive nature of the players currently in the squad. In the outfield positions this is very true because we have two or three players that can play in a particular position.

Maybe Roos will continue to improve without that competition pushing him, but at the moment there is only young Griffiths & he's still learning his trade, & unfortunately hasn't had much game time.

I would have preferred that the Club would have ensured that they had two goalkeepers who were competent enough to replace each other, either due to poor form or injuries.

If Martin doesn't feel Griffiths good enough, he will have to play him if Roos gets injured. So why not give him some game time now & allow him to show what he can do?

Sure, that kind of adds up @Sheffield Pie, I wonder if you could do a split for that stat for the 1st 6 league games and the the last 6 league games as a comparison?

The return of Montague as Director of Football tells all the squad that there's a fresh performance evaluator with the clout to act on what he sees. this should help to keep all players on their toes, and you'd have to imagine the players brough in by Gagliardi are at a very slight disadvantage to the ones RM brought in himself (Jarvis for example).

If Roos plays well thru to January he might well keep the shirt. Down to him, as it is with every other player.

Didn't he play in the that comp that has youth players in it?

I think that's as far as giving game time can go. Yes, he would play league games if Roos is injured or has a collapse of form. Then we'd be looking at emergency loans or even Slocs getting the gloves out of the attic.  13 league games to go til January. During that time, GK needs will be assessed, but ditto for all positions.

@theAnticlough If Roos gets injured & Notts have to bring in an emergency loan, & that could be a possibility because Roos will be classed as a Senior Goalkeeper, that demonstrates to me that the Club haven't covered the goalkeeping position sufficiently which brings us back to the fact that Notts should have ensured that they had two senior goalkeepers of League 2 ability.

As for Slocombe I don't think he would be considered as an alternative.

If that's the case, then yes - the position isn't as well covered as it needs to be. Let's hope Roos does well for the remaining 13 games this year and the club takes it from there.

Quite revealing:

Games 1-6 saved 8 out of 17 = 47%

Games 7-11 saved 14 out of 17 = 82%

The 6 out of 6 shots saved vs Fleetwood helped - maybe a turning point? Interesting to read the MoM thread from that game!

Encouraging @Sheffield Pie. Maybe it was a turning point.

The overall shakiness of the first few matches has gone. Who is in front of him might also play a part. For whatever strange reason, Platt made an erratic start to the season. In contrast, RodMac has been a model of calm and consistency since then. Him and Roos may have develop a good understanding in a short time.

After reading all the comments from other clubs supporters i took an instant dislike to him!!!!!!since watching him live.......nothing as happened to change my mind.....perhaps that may seem quite harsh but perhaps RM will agree and prioritise getting in another keeper???

When we were 4-0 up against Crawley and 3.1 up against Oldham, I found him most entertaining. Otherwise somewhat alarming.

I don't think there is a question mark over his ability to make saves, I would say that's his strong point. For me it's his coming for crosses and distribution. When the opposition know his weakness they will just pump balls into the box and play for set pieces. If he can improve those weaknesses (and why not, we have goalkeeper coach and an ex-goalkeeper on the coaching staff) then he could turn out to be a good goalkeeper. He certainly has big match experience.

I think he's looked a little bit more confident recently but in the last couple of matches he wasn't overly tested, especially with set-pieces and this was still really obvious in the Crewe match. I’m wondering if he actually struggles to judge where the ball will land when it’s in the air. When he punches the ball it’s usually because he’s stretching for it (or charging from under his crossbar). If he was able to read the flight of the ball better and position himself better in the first place he might stand more of a chance of actually claiming the ball.

When you compare him the other keepers in the league in terms of stats right now he’s not exactly coming out on top for anything (apart from shots faced, but that tells you more about the defence than the keeper and I’ll go into that in a minute). In terms of save percentage, high claims, goals prevented, he’s lurking in the bottom half of the table for most things. Compared to Bass (and this doesn’t help him!) who last season was one of the best keepers in the league statistically. That's not to say Roos can't improve, I really hope he will but I'm just not sure.

Bass was really good last season and that's kind of affected how we are looking at Roos. In terms of how much he had to do he was up there with Morecambe’s keeper, Newport’s keeper, Carlisle’s keeper and MK Dons' keeper. A bit strange to see a team that finished 6th tied in with the really poor teams from last season! At the other end of the scale you had Wimbledon’s, Walsall’s, Doncaster’s and Port Vale’s keepers, they generally had a lot less to do most matches… The only good thing for us now is that in terms of having to make saves Roos is at right end of the scale, which means our defence right now is actually doing better than last season.

I think the Barnet game has shown that Roos doesn't necessarily need come for crosses if you have central defenders that head everything. Goalkeepers that have to collect a lot of crosses maybe play behind defenders that are not particularly good in the air. If our defenders play like they did against Barnet then Roos will prove to be a good goalie for us.

He dropped a couple of high balls in his first match or two. Hardly ever have I seen so much angst and despair over so little :)

But to help those struggling to move on, and judge him on his excellent last half dozen games instead, maybe he changed his gloves

i think there are times when comments are not forgiving and pre established opinions control the narrative but i do understand the criticism. a lot of members on pon have been fair, giving him credit for improving but its different on social media which at times is ott. for me, his mistakes make me nervous, he can do well but he is prone to causing trouble. that said, he dont always get a fair reflection of his performances and notts fans have always been critical of keepers.

I never look at X or places like that @liampie. I thought it was bad enough on here and on podcasts, so I can well imagine how terrible it was elsewhere.

Yes, he made a slow and shaky start to a new job, but he stabilised and turned it around.

I keep on repeating this but I love the mentality when he receives the ball. He's in sync with most fans in looking for ways to start a new attack, even if it's a quick roll-out short. Other keepers we've had in recent years had different, old-fashioned instincts - I have the ball, safely safely, look all around, keep hold of it, let the lads push up. To me Roos is more like Kaspar, you can see he wants to be positive and start something.

We have been blessed in the keeper department for many years, that most haven't been seen as the reason for dropping points. I don't think Kelle Roos is at fault for our poor start, but he certainly contributed towards it and tends to make mistakes most natural keepers wouldn't. I want to see every player succeed, and I don't choose to single out players and that is why I am pleased with the progress he's been making.

I would much rather see him being voted for as the Man of the Match for when Notts have played well, than not. However, there's a lot of praise deserved in his direction for the fact we left Barnet with the 3 points.

It would have been an achievement had we drawn, considering the treat Barnet displayed and I hope we see more of this.

It's unfortunate that Roos hasn't built confidence amongst our supporters, but with more performances of this nature he might just do that. I want to feel like our keeper is protecting games, not ask risk of giving points away and sadly that is how Roos has come across for the most part of his time. Some poor decisions, and erractic behaviour cost us, but he's looking like he is improving which is promising.
