Just read the report that this pm he has left by mutual consent.

Can understand their fans reactions that they were lucky to have him two years ago to get promoted, but they've not moved on at all since then.

Just shows how all managers fall on their swords eventually, regardless of achievements.

Who should replace him at the helm at Field Mill?

@william1984 Please tell Paul's mum next time you see her that it's @Dan's fault ;)

It's a joke, I'd be surprised if they could find someone who could cope with what he's had to. I just feel he was good enough for them, he got them back into the football league and now he's being blamed by some for overspending? Buying bad players? Sorry, it happens at that level and I really do have to question who they think will work into the club with all that's going off.

Injuries are to blame, not Paul Cox.

I wonder what our favourite camera man thinks. #paulcoxout ?? :(

You have to wonder how chairmen have the expectations they have. They are deluded. They have no idea about football and are trigger happy. Every club needs some form of stability and that comes from continuity. Could the stags get promotion from league 2 with their resources? I think he's done OK but not much more. He should still be an asset to someone in the lower leagues.

I expect them to get relegated soon, if not this year the one after. Shame really because its been on the cards for awhile.

MANAGER Paularrow-10x10.png Cox has left Mansfield by mutual consent.

Player/assistant managerarrow-10x10.png Adam Murray will take temporary charge of the first team, whilst the process of finding a successor now begins.

Chairman John Radford said: "I've had a long discussion with Paul Cox this afternoon about the future of the club. As you know, this is a club which both Paul and myself hold very close to our hearts.

"Unfortunately, as a result of those discussions, Paul and I have regrettably reached the conclusion that it's in the best interests of Mansfield Town Football Club if he stepped down from his current role with immediate effectarrow-10x10.png. Therefore, the search now begins for a new manager."

Not surprised at this news to be honest, he sounded very down on his last interview on radio red.

It's a shame it hasn't worked out for him but he did well getting the Stags back in the lesgue.

You're way out with those comments Joe. His football is dinosaur at best. It worked in the conference but it's not worked in the league as it's a lot harder and a lot more intelligent scouts/managers are around. You only have to look at what opposition managers have said, how easy it is to play against us as we've only got one tactic - hoof it up to the big lad. It's so easy to defend against. The fans have been bored out of their minds for years with this archaic hoofball, just look at comments on my Stags related statuses. I'm not happy he's gone (he wasn't sacked) as I don't like anyone to lose their job, but the time was right, it should've happened on Tuesday night really after drawing at home to Concord Rangers.

I think @GrannyPie had posted this already, as I said in her thread I am not surprised he sounded very down in his last interview on Radio Red.

No @hissingdwarf was first but I didn't notice .Sorry.

I'll let you off this time @GrannyPie, but next time you'll have to sit on the naughty step. Sorry politically correct 'time out to think about it' step.

I've merged them both, not a problem.

@Dan - I still think that fact he struggled to name a starting 11 as a lot to do with it. Not all Mansfield fans are fickle but a lot I've came into contact are, including my inbred cousin.

Whoever takes over must be careful.

I'd be wary because I do feel Mansfield will decline, I'm not saying that to be bitter.

@Dan is right, his tactics are those straight from the Keith Alexander book, long ball football isn't always boring to watch, nor can it be easy to defend against, Russell Slade, Neil Warnock, Tony Pulis to name but a few are long ball merchants but it is done with a purpose, not just in hope.

Unfortunately for Paul Cox, who may I say is a thoroughly decent person first & foremost, the vast majority of defenders in League 2 are where they are because the one thing they can do well is defend balls in the air, you put the ball on the deck and that is where they will be found wanting.

I'm sure though with his record of getting Mansfield out of what is a very difficult league to get out of he will be back in management at conference level very soon.

The game has changed, and I think that those Managers mentioned before, are not just "Hoof it up to the big guy" styled. They work on moving the ball from back to front as quickly as possible yes, but it is different (if that makes the slightest bit of sense).

Not that I know anything at all about Mansfield's football during his tenure, but the hoof it's are slowly but surely disappearing from the game altogether.

i think this is a joke because i bet the next manager plays hoof football. just watch, always funny watching stags fans on the banter pages on fb lol

We passed the ball more yesterday than we have in the past year under that clown!!

Do you reckon Adam Murray will get the job? For me he deserves a chance and his bold move in dropping was it 5 players? shows he has the guts for it

Posted

I hope he does get it because it will be the closest thing to us having a Shaun Derry character. We've had him on 3 different spells at the club and he loves it here. I only got there for the last half hour yesterday but it was a completely different place. Nearly 3,000 fans there, all singing, cheering, getting behind the team (that's not happened for a LONG time), the players putting their bodies on the line for the cause, again that's not happened for a while. And at full time the celebrations by the players was a sight to behold, it was a joy to watch. The place hasn't been that happy for well over a year.

It strikes me that the chairman would be daft not to, although don't you have massive financial problems again?

Posted

Yes because Cox wasted loads of it when we were in the conference. We bought players to stop them going to other teams and then hardly played them. Bizarre. Last season the budget was cut from £1.6m to £800,000 and he couldn't cope with it as he moaned about it every week!

Posted

That's quite a competitive budget for league 2, how many players did he sign / waste the vast majority of that budget on?

Posted

Quite a few. There were rumours of players like George Pilkington (who he fell out with, one of a number!) being sat in the stand on £2,000 a week fgs, crazy. If you saw some of the comments from ex players on facebook/twitter you'd also understand why we're all glad he's gone.

@Dan who would you like as the manager?

Adam Murray.
