Alan Smith was great up front.

Jones - all action, no nonsense display. Worked his nuts off and chased down everything. He gets my vote ahead of Dumbuya who, as usual, looked comfortable in possession and was tidy until the last 15 mins.

Smith was lively for 30 mins but to no end, he offered no threat, just a lot of free kicks, to Coventry. Being a tw@t doesn't qualify for MOTM.

I'm no fan of Newton but he did well today, after a shaky start & despite his usual wandering out of position on occasions. He looked solid enough in the 2nd half tbf.

Alan Smith was our best player by a country mile.

Gary Thompson was anonymous, Gary Jones tried but he left massive holes which caused us problems all game, had we been playing a better team we would have been severely punished. Roy Carroll made a brilliant save at the end, the defence did alright today, Liam Noble looked lively and tried to offer something different when he came on, all in all not overly disappointed, we looked like we had a game plan and we at least tried to string a few passes together, two very poor sides though. they seem to have the same problem as us, players just going through the motions.

How was Smith our best player, by any distance? By what definition did he have a good game? He ran around more than usualfir 25 minutes, granted, but he gave away a few free kicks, posed zero threat to the opposition's goal, fell over a lot and is a card waiting to happen with some ridiculous tackling - usually straight in front of the referee! The bloke is an utter liability & past it in to the bargain, but he isn't alone there. The fact he was better than his usual "off the pace", inept self hardly makes him MOTM material to my mind.

Being busy doesn't constitute "having a good game" in my book. He was ineffective and produced sod all. You'll be telling me next that Noble and Bajner made a difference!

The defence did ok - under siege for most of the second half because we gift the ball away too easily, Smith simply can't hold on to the ball when he dies get it, Thompson was just poor and Mullins was non existent defensively, caught out of position far too often. If it hadn't been for Jones covering like crazy and making challenges all over the pitch we would have struggled to contain them even more than we did. Dumbuya, Carroll & Newton were all better candidates for MOTM than Smith for my money. In fact, add Hollis & Edwards to that list too. Intriguingly, on a forum not far from here - 10 assessments rate Smith between 4 - 6 (one was a 4 and 3 x 5.5 as it happens, and none had him as MOTM, for what it's worth).

You obviously have no concept of football if you couldn't see that Alan Smith did exactly what was asked of him, I'm not really sure what you expected him to do, maybe your career in bullsh!te, sorry HR, could address those issues for me.

As for Muzzy, maybe if he actually tried he might have been the "comfortable" player you profess him to be, Mullins was out of position covering for your golden boy who, apart from when the ball found him, did nothing other than look like he was running through treacle all afternoon.

You were a great loss to the diplomatic corps. Thanks for your incisive view, I'll pass on it all the same.

Smith remains way past his best and played far too deep to be of any use whatsoever yesterday. If you think he had a good game, that's a matter for you. The rest is gossip tbh.

Let's keep it civil, It's all about opinions chaps, I agree with @Northants Pie I thought Smith was man of the match.

It doesn't sound good when your best player on the pitch, is the one who looked the most awkward in the position and role in which he played. He had a decent game but I couldn't name a man of the match, certainly not Alan Smith.

I'm with @Pies4u on this.

He held the ball well, won headers and he performed better than Garry Thompson who went largely unnoticed - This combo upfront does not work! Though in positions whereby you would expect an experienced player to shoot, Alan just passed the ball and often this lead to good chances being countered. It was a much more 'rounded' performance from him but he was no way near the standard to be named the Man of the Match.

If Liam Noble had came on sooner, fans would be saying him.

I can't name any, not because I'm being negative but because the majority played on the same level making them equal or poor.

If I was rating the players my max score would be 5-6/10. No one shined, all too average for me. One of the most boring games I've seen in a while, but I'll take the point.

Still think we're staying up, let's see what Yeovil brings

Regards Al
