As well as football and family there is another great interest for me and,  I would think, a  lot of other fans too.

I'm not keen on beer, tried to get into drinking it but it;s weird. I like Whiskey and Cider mainly

I like Tony's comments on the Admin site(quiz night etc) where the subject somehow got on to beer and pubs.

     There are some great pubs around and others to be avoided and sadly pubs are disappearing at an alarming rate.

      On the plus side real ales are thriving.

      I don't have a particular favourite beer. Sometimes I'll have a sweetish,fruity beer or sometimes one more bitter tasting. I like trying new ones and regional ales I've not tried before. It depends on how I feel and what's on offer.

     I am quite happy to sample most regular beers provided they are well kept.

     I DO NOT care for lager.

     My favourite other alcoholic drink is whisky and dry ginger(with varying degrees of dry ginger dilution)

I am not a fussy drinker, although i do tend to buy a select group of beer.
 
Last time I were in and around Nottingham it was sad to see the amount of traditionally old pubs had gone. Now newsagents, restaurants or simply fashioned.       The last time I visited my home town,  Alfreton, I was saddened to see several pubs had closed and my favourite chippy too.

Whenever we visit somewhere in our camper van, I always like to sample the local brew, I think it is important to keep these small local breweries going. My wife get's quite annoyed as I drag her round going in different pubs and seeing what ale is on the counter and if I don't like the look of it I walk straight out again.

 

I like a dark ale by preference although I am not keen on Guiness or other stouts it has to be a bitter and I never drink lager, I'd rather go without.

 

I think it is sad that all our local breweries have now gone, Kimberley, Shipstones, Home Ales, all of these beers were a lovely drink if they were kept well. On the positive side there are now some excellent micro breweries that do a nice range of real ale. Here are a few local ones.

Next time your in a pub don't go for the national brand names, ask about the local brew and lets keep these breweries going.

Super ram likes to go and have a look to see what beers are at pubs and especially likes to try the local beers.. when we are on holiday together he is always doing it. I myself don't drink so its not an interest of mine, but i don't mind sitting in pubs and enjoying time with family.

It is a shame that lots of pubs are closing or being taken over because of the current situation. We should be supporting local businesses wherever possible because without them every city and down will just look the same with lots of chain pubs and shops.

 When my wife and I were first going out and were in an unknown area looking for somewhere to have a drink ,I would often walk past several pubs because of the beer they sold. She very soon learnt  which brands I didn't care for .

You do go in saying what you like and don't so if others are like you.. they will soon know whats not worth keeping

Probably abit like the pub in ingoldmells that a few years ago had funny tasting soft drinks so we only drank the bottled ones they brought it, although you said your beer was alright. We don't go there anymore now after last years events and the pubs staffs priorities.

I know the pub you refer to. We used to like it and always went there a few times each holiday .I get the feeling they can't be bothered too much with holiday makers (just want to get as much off them as they can)  I also  got the feeling that they pandered to the locals at the expense of visitors ..I understand that locals are their bread and butter, out of the holiday season,but there's no need to be so biased.

I see what you mean. But being fair is the main thing that will keep both locals and holiday makers going.

They were really friendly when i first went with you too, but then it started getting very busy with locals and now they tend to be on their side. Obviously they are there all year round and not just a few weeks a year but holiday makers would spend more over that period and come back when they visit again if they like it that much. As we go back to alot of places we've been to before because its what we are used to.

why not get together over after season finishes? would anyone want to? would be nice.

I'm open to the idea but I think the site needs to grow, I can't really afford for things to become slow because I very much want to keep focus on the site.

Lol There are a few good pubs in Nottingham, i can't say i've been to many around the city centre because most won't allow kids in and i've near enough always got them with me. I hear alot about certain pubs being good and friendly though.

Can anyone remember the Crystal Palace a very small pub that used to be on Clumber Street? I think it closed in the late 80s or early 90s, a lovely homely Shipstones pub. I think it's a Sun Valley Amusement arcade now.

 

Another great Nottingham pub is the Bell Inn in the Market Square, I've spent many a happy hour in there in my youth. I'll shut up now I'm starting to sound  like an alcoholic.

Yes ,I think I remember the Crystal Palace but I don't think I ever went in.

I've been in the Bell a few times, though not for a while.Great old pub with lots of atmosphere.

 

Do you remember The Windmill on Pilcher Gate/Weekday cross.A great little pub that was knocked down about 1965. Opposite  is The Cross Keys. I used to work almost next door and we often would go for a quick drink at dinnertime.

I can't remember that one Super Ram, I was only 13 in 1965 so still a bit too young for drinking.

 

The first pub I went to as a youngster was The Salutation on Maid Marion Way. Me and my mate started drinking strongbow cider in there and used to sit at the bottom of the stairs so we could watch the girls go up stairs in their mini skirts. Lol.

 

One night I went to the bar for our normal two pints of strongbow and it was off, so not knowing any other beer I pointed at a pump and said "I'll have two pints of that please". It turned out to be Home Ales bitter and I've never looked back since.

 

I also took a girl I'd met at the Palais there for our first real date, we got told off by the landlady for snogging, she is now my wife of 37 years!!

I used to meet my mates from the Alfreton area in the Salutation when the Rams were playing Rushcliffe Rovers(me already being in Nottingham)

 

The first time I went in the Windmill was christmas 1963 (I was nearly 17)

 

My older workmates persuaded me to go with them during our dinner break. The pub was packed and I can't remember what the beer was,  but it was very nice. I had a couple of pints and then we had to go back to work. As it was the last day before the christmas break there was a party atmosphere and not much work being done.Everyone was having drinks,  and mince pies and glasses of sherry and port were being handed out. Needless to say the drinks were beginning to take effect. I was very pleased when I was asked to go to Burtons (A shop which used to be part of the Council House  and sold various grocery items) to buy some cream cakes. The fresh air did the trick for me and I returned to work and enjoyed a cream cake but refused anymore drinks

 

 We only had christmas day and boxing day off work in those days.-What memories!
