Do Notts have a duty to win in style?

On the latest PONCast we discuss whether Notts County should be looking to play attacking football and entertain the fans. Notts Joe thinks we should. I think we should just look to grind out wins first and foremost. Listen to the discussion on the PONCast and tell us what you think.

I'd have to side with Joe (Jones) on this one.  I really enjoyed the home games under the attacking strategy of Moniz, even though the goalmouth action wasn't always at the right end!  Much better than the hoofball and midfield head tennis we have seen so often before, Saturday included.  Saying that, the result is the main thing - I don't ever remember leaving the ground depressed after a win or happy after a defeat however those results were obtained.

I think the answer lies somewhere between the two..............to win games, we need to score goals.....to score goals we need to attack, get in good positions, take shots, gain corners....apply pressure.

If we just sat back and defended for most of the game (a) we are likely to lose more than we win......and (b) nobody would want to pay £24 on the off-chance that we would score a break-away goal!!

Under KC.....I spent more time in Lawtons Bar watching SSN .......than I did in the stands!

After watching Moniz's sides, then yes would be the answer. The way we attacked was something not seen at the Lane for many years. It was exciting. But it was eventually floored and found out by too many teams, hence his dismissal.

Real terms no. They have a duty to put in the effort. Any lower league fan will tell you a win is a win and you take them when you can.

Price wise, most definitely. A lot of hard earned cash goes into the gates each week or the beginning of the season from season tickets. Fans have a right to get something back from their investment.

We grounded results out under quite a few of our last managers, it's risky business - @tarquinbeech makes a point about it being somewhere between the two. However, I would hope the phrase 'the best form of defence is to attack' is applied under Fullarton. It's early days, yet if we just sit back and try to grab wins we are relying on the fact we must create the perfect opportunity.

It doesn't have to be always free flowing, crisp football but I'd ideally I would like to see us playing pretty football.

Going into games confident breeds it, knowing you can win - makes a massive difference. I don't think we can play the style that Moniz wanted all the time during games, yet it would be more frustrating to see us sit back and gamble on our attacks.

Winning isn't everything but if you play well enough, it will come. No side is always unlucky when you lose, it's just an excuse that managers coin out.

I think the phrase "you make your own luck" springs to mind

JF said the game on saturday swung on "small margins".............."we hit the post.......but they went up the pitch and scored"?

Simple stats say.....Wombles 11 shots on target to our 2, the same ratio for corners ......that doesn't sound like "small margins"....or luck, for that matter.

It sounds like the attacking team won!

Which is exactly why it's risky, it may work against average teams but the majority in this division can punish you.

I'd rather see us become a side like Stevenage, kick 'em to the ground - than a sit back and time your 'attack'. Yet, I don't like dirty football - I guess this all depends on what you prefer about football. Some fans would take any sort of win - I'd prefer to be skillful and earn victories by playing well.

I am too much of a football purist to watch hoofball. There is nothing more depressing than watching your team just hoof it aimlessly in the general direction of the forwards. The way that Swindon played under Cooper, the way that Arsenal play under Wenger, Southampton under Koeman and Bournemouth under Howe, that is how I like to watch football, it is much more difficult to coach hence why the vast majority just hoof it as there is no science in it no matter what your powerpoint might say....

I totally agree with @Northants Pie.

All clubs have a duty to entertain because they charge admission. I interpret that as they must attempt to win with style. Playing with style is easy, winning with style less so as @Northants Pie says above.

At present it's very unlikely I'll renew our three season tickets next year.

i think we should look to be like the championship winning season, we should always sign the best players from the teams beneath us or the same division. that would result in a decent team being formed and i would be surprised if it did not mean we would not entertain fans.

As many have said above it must be in between, under derry and the game this Saturday I was bored out of my mind wondering when we would actually get a shot on goal! Moniz was far too gun-ho but it was exciting, we have the players to be creative and score goals, lets use them!

It does not matter to me what type of football Notts play because I will only ever see the highlights regularly.

If I was a season ticket holder I would want value for my money and entertaining football. That would be at the very least because playing mediocre will one day bite you in the arse. It also seems to me that Notts have been on a downward spiral since they have not been able to play good football, the type which has seen us at our very best. The type of football we had under Sirrel, Warnock etc.
