Question 7: The Football League's 4 Divisions - Part 2

Featured Replies

Now the previous question the other way round. Which clubs have appeared in only 1 division in their entire football league history?

(I count AFC Wimbledon as a continuation of the 'old' Wimbledon so they don't count. The word 'club' will always excluded franchises as far as I'm concerned.)

Kidderminister. Gateshead? Cheltenham? Macclesfield? Chester? Aldershot?ย

The only 1 I'm certain of is Kidderminister.ย

2 points Sir. Kiddy and Gateshead.

I was thinking of this from the bottom, but what about from the top?ย

Arsenal? Everton?ย

Morecambe and theย reformed Accrington Stanley

ย

Pretty sure that Aresenal and Everton have both been relegated (but a long time ago!).

Arsenal were definitely in division two, Barnsley were overlooked promotion about a hundred years ago in their favour. And I think Everton were in the second division in the 40s.

Arsenal have never been relegated but started out in Div 2

1 point for Morecambe, and another if you count Stanley as a completely different club. I'm an old romantic though and think of them as the same club - so for the first time in my life I'll be generous and give you half a point!

Relegated in 1913 as Woolwich Arsenal. Same club!

Everton, thirties for 1 season and fifties for 3. They have the most top flight seasons.

Not during their football league history, within the 4 divisions.

Loughborough.

One point. The one curious fact about Loughborough that I love is that their record victory and defeat are against Arsenal, 8-0 and (I think) 0-13!

That is still Arsenal's record defeat of all time.

That's incredible.

Now here's an interesting one. I recall a Burton fan informing me, smugly I might add, that Burton had another league side before the current version. Unrelated he said. Are they one?

Burton Swifts and Burton Wanderers,I believe, were both League members at some time. They merged and became Burton United who were also members for a short time.
