Why Notts?

So i was thinking while arguing with a couple of florist fans, as you do, why did people decide to support notts ?

Because I feel like as Notts fans we accept we arent the best team in the world, and as hard as it is we know florist will be more successful and have more fans

So what made you decide to support notts over those over the Trent ?

*This might have been done before but i just thought it was a good discussion topic

I'm not really sure to be honest, but it may come down to the fact that my Grandad was a Florist fan and my Great Aunt was a Notts fan and I really liked my Aunt. I was also a Man Utd fan as a kid (I did grow up), so I couldn't support two teams that wore red. There was just something about Florist that I didn't like. I think that was exacerbated when

Florist won the league and most of the Liverpool fans at my junior school suddenly switched allegiance! Never liked them from that day forward.

Well i must admit i was also a man united fan in my younger days but I guess i chose notts because my uncle was always a notts fan and saw them in the glory days, not to mention two of my best friends at school being florist fans so it just felt right to support county! I should have read the writing on the wall when my first game i heard a bloke saying "you're just as s#*t as last season notts!" But i just fell in love with the club!

In my case it was a combination of teenage rebellion (where you do the opposite of what you're supposed to do) and an affection for the underdog.  I had no family affiliations and didn't really get into football until I was about 15, even then it was limited to checking the results and hoping Notts had won.  When I started work my best mate was a Forest fan, he wanted me to join him, so we agreed to go to a game at each ground.  Notts were first, it was an evening game in 1970 and I was hooked from the minute I walked into Meadow Lane.  I never went to the City Ground and didn't miss another Notts home game all season.  I've never regretted picking Notts for a second, even though it's been painful for much of the time!

What right do you have to tell me I'm wrong?  You're not my Granddaughter.

GrannyPie's father (my grandfather) was a huge football fan, there was once upon a time where he would regularly go to both Nottingham clubs but he stopped after some Forest fans chased a young United supporter into the River Trent. From there on he started going to more Notts games than any (he always preferred Notts) but when I was little, I was disappointed that my father (Super Ram) would only take my brother to Derby County games and so my Grandfather decided to take me.

I never missed a trip to Wembley or any important games after he first took me, and I recall going to see reserve team games at Meadow Lane also.

In my youth, I liked Arsenal due to the lack of televised lower league games and I almost took up supporting them permanently if wasn't for my grandfathers passion for this club. In many ways, I wished he was around here now because his knowledge of football was second to known and I am convinced he could beat Colin Slater at a quiz (it would help my grandfather never forgot about where he was).

That said, all my three children are like Notts and although my eldest now likes Chelsea - he does love Notts.

So, I could say its a family thing. You Pies!!

A field where dreams become reality.

My dads friend was playing for Notts, having previously played for Forest and we came to a game, Saturday 03 March 1984 against West Brom, which btw we drew 1-1, before going round to his house for dinner where my elder brother made the timeless comment to our hosts wife when asked if he had liked the food "yes it was nice but i didn't like the yellow peas" refering to sweetcorn.

I was singing the songs on the way home and it has stuck everyday since

I've still got the programme from that game.

This is a great thread such a cooking pot of reasons above , I kind of share lots of them , family,  dad florist and notts , eldest bro notts middle bro florist , then myself oh yes you Pies , when I was about 15 dad took myself and a mate to watch florist in a cup match at the city ground in the old east stand , loads of fighting and my dad bless him tenacious as he was when the fighting had stopped some of the so called florist fans were kicking the seating and wooden boards in the stand making quiet a mess so dad went over and told them in no uncertain terms to refrain, they did eventually, but I couldn't help getting a bad taste in my mouth for that side of the Trent, fans are fickle the world over but there's just seem worse , then I went to notts fell in love yes we have had our tiff's lol but could would NEVER swap the Black and White of NCFC for any other let alone that shower , could go on way to much more but enough said COYP

Just got to add this I find florist fans so damn patronising , oh notts are ok don't mind them winning like to see them do well , NO , come on how many Notts fans would say that about them , you probably get it I really don't like them one tiny bit , not jealous of them or wish we had their money or level of support i genuinely like nothing about them .

Because I am a sadist, down beat, sour faced b*****d who loves nothing more than complaining and being disappointed.

Plus my dad was a County fan.

Why Notts?

I was about 7 when my football mad  dad took me to see my first game.  florist v Man City about 1968. I sat on a barrier at the Bridgford end and held on to my dad for dear life as it was packed. city won 3 - 0. the last goal being a shot from outside the area and as the crowd streamed away I turned to my dad and said that was a good goal. immediately we were surrounded by a dozen or more of the lowest forms of life threatening to beat me and my father up for my comment. I was never so scared in my life, as these were adults and my dad would never stand a chance against them with me on his back. As an ex Squaddie he was fit and none of the gobshites wanted to go first and risk getting hit,  but they spat at us as he backed away towards the exit, then ran. Bet they felt proud when they told the story in the pub that night. Years latter, I stood in the same spot, and celebrated les Bradds late winner with my dad and 4 mates. no one said anything to us.

We went to see Derby next, but I couldn't see anything below the knee when the ball was on the other side of the pitch, as it was curved.  a mr Clough was manager and prices went up for juniors, so we stopped going.

So it was sort of an accident when we went to Notts. I stood on the kop behind the goal, and loved it. Jimmy Sirrel took over as manager and the rest is history.

Great read@Piety enjoyed that read similar in ways to my own tale , ya really do get a better class of supporter at the lane , if perish the thought there was no notts could never go to the dark side lol

Growing up all my family were florist fans, but my grandad took me to my first ever match when I was 7, this was at meadow lane. When I was a lityle older I went to both, this was In the 80's. I didn't really like the atmosphere at florist and was always quite intimidated by their fans, there was just an unnerving air about the terrace. When I went to watch Notts the fans would always talk to you and it was a much friendlier atmosphere. Believe it or not I actually enjoyed the football more too, i thought it was a better standard, even though we were in a lower league.

i wanted to support a local club, it was either notts or forest and i have always preferred the underdogs. i guess i should make the switch now forst are a laughing stock now?

only kidding. i got a free ticket from school, i have been to see forest because my dad supports them but only in my mid teens did i really start liking football. before joining pon i was just a casual fan.
