Magpies wait on Liddle news

<!--url{0}-->Notts County are waiting to discover the extent of the ankle injury Gary Liddle sustained against Bristol City.

Liddle left Meadow Lane on Saturday evening wearing a protective boot after being hurt in a challenge with Robins defender Greg Cunningham during the 1-1 league draw.

Magpies manager Shaun Derry fears the 27-year-old may have damaged ligaments but he will undergo scans on Monday to determine the extent of the problem, although the club are optimistic there is no broken bone.

Derry has refused to put a timescale on Liddle's absence until the results of the X-rays are in, but the player looks likely to miss County's games over the Christmas and New Year period.

"Gary's struggling with his ankle," Derry told the media on Monday morning.

"I felt it was a bad tackle at the time, I've got to say, and after seeing it again on replays that has just clarified my view.

"He will be out of the next couple of games at the very least, but he's an honest guy and he'll get back as soon as he possibly can because he's a proper man.

"It doesn't look like a break, so we'll have to wait to see exactly what the damage is.

"It's a tough knock for the lad, but he'll bounce back. Hopefully he won't be out for too long because he's been immense for us, since the minute I walked through the door, he's been fantastic."

Gary put up on Twitter the following day - "Thanks for the messages, feeling sore this morning as expected, will know more next week. Fingers crossed all is ok."

Hopefully he's avoided any long term damage, seriously we don't need to debate the challenge. I think Bristol City fans should consider themselves lucky, had this been again Tranmere they would be getting plagued with threats by now.

Gary's reliable, it's a shame about what happened at the start of the season but he's done a lot for us in these past two years.

I personally hope we see him back within 4-6 weeks, if it's longer - We might need to consider getting back up for a centre back, I know we have Manny Smith but how our defence as been - It's something I wouldn't want to risk. Hopefully Gary will feel better soon, I can recall twisting my anckle and being annoyed I couldn't take part in a cup for school. It's very frustrating! 'Every Liddle Helps' remember!

If he is out for any length of time it will be a big blow for us, he really is a big part of the team. Fingers crossed he is back soon.

It seems certain in my opinion we won't see his return until after the New Year, this is 3 games which we will miss him.

I'd seriously be surprised if he came back sooner, that would be a miracle.

The timing isn't great, as he was really adapting to his new role further up the pitch, highlighted by his goals.

Let's hope he is back sooner rather than later. Let's hope they are right to be optimistic about no broken bone!

Did anybody else notice the "proper man" quote? I hope the damage isn't as bad as they fear. I remember doing the ligaments and nerves in my left ankle. Learning to balance again was not fun.

Get well soon Lids, Your team needs you!!

Didn't sound good in today's post match interview with Shaun. Likely to be out for the majority of the remaining season with ligament damage.

yeah i noticed comments about him being out for the rest of the season? is it true?

big blow for us! no matter how long.

Hopefully we will see him overcoming the injury, we could with a little bit of luck here. If he misses the rest of the season, we need to find a replacement for two key areas as Liddle provided great cover at the back.

When does Hollis return? Is he still injured?

I think uncle Ray now has to get Shaun a belated prezzie or 3 come the new year. If Liddle is out for an extended period then (unless Shaun himself can play) we need to fill the middle of the park with a dominating player who can box to box. A solid centre back for cover (still say KP should never have been told to leave!) and of course a new centre forward.

I'm sure we could clear out a few others though such as (Sorry Notts-Joe) a certain mr sulky...errmmm I mean Y Arquin!

If it means we survive get rid! We need to reduce the amount of strikers, getting better quality in the process but I will always hope we can get the most out of players, as this aid us further at our level (Ignore my Signature, last year it was JCR).

We certainly need to fill in the park! Better midfielders than what we have is vital.

I think JCR would have been a better choice for this year as, for me, he has really come on since SD took over. Real enthusiasm and passion in his game. Some of the players on the sidelines should learn from that. He went through a very long lean and ineffective spell, but has applied himself and shown vision and willingness since SD & GA came on board.

Signature looks good btw. I'm not a fan of the purple away strip, but on that background it looks quite effective. shame its not as effective on green grass!!!

I agree - Last time I defended him it started a debate against my thoughts! (friendly debate)

We need the coaching staff to insist what the players are doing wrong and help correct that, I don't know what Curle or CK's angle was but I don't think it helped JCR or some of the other players. He came back wanting to help get the fans on side, I have to praise JCR for this because I've heard a lot of nonsense shouted at home.

Part of his inactive spell was because of injury, though he didn't walk straight back into the side. Deano, seems to have this ability - He can just come back whenever.

Thank you, I wasn't keen on the away shirt but it's grown on me. I can't say I hated it, I just didn't really like the idea of purple until I saw it up close.

I will be surprised if we can land the signing we need, in the January window.

A box to box midfielder, a natural leader, decent scoring record.

We need him to have all of those attributes and more. Our forwards are not scoring enough, we miss a strong vocal leader on the pitch and as we have said now we are missing the box to box player.

Naturally there will be other key attributes and skills required. But these players just do not become available in January.

PDIT...

I agree totally

The problem we face now is the need for that perfect midfielder and the only choices are young lads learning their trade. If the intention is to keep them as bench warmers, let them do that at their parent clubs and us save the money.

Grealish and mac are the exceptions to the rule!!!

There are plenty who see it this way.

The question is... If we can see it, why the hell can the powers that be not see it also?

Of course, they could be part of the group who see things a different way. But they are all wrong B)

Liddle was withdrawn from the action with a nasty looking ankle injury and scan results have shown ligament damage, which may require surgery.

First team manager Shaun Derry is disappointed to lose one of his squad’s key players but knows last season’s Player of the Year can bounce back.

He said: “It’s not very good news regarding Gary and unfortunately the results have come back and it looks like he’ll be missing the vast majority of the remainder of the season.

“The circumstances are now that we’re losing not just an influential player but a character around the football club.

“He’s been brilliant, not just on the pitch but off the pitch he’s been great for me in and around the dressing room.

“His professionalism is second to none but sadly for Gary he’s going to have to come to terms with this injury – and he will.

“He’ll get himself back fitter and stronger and better, because he’s a big player for Notts County and he’ll be right behind the lads regardless.â€

The manager also revealed that he hopes to have striker Callum Ball by the weekend but no risks will be taken with his head injury.

Doesn't look good then

Hopefully more will come alight as time goes on, it might not be as bad. It's certainly not what we or Gary needs, the tackle still makes me annoyed and the fact that it's just a case of 'put up', it just sit well for me.

There needs to be a way to appeal missed incidents like this, had the player hit Gary it would be different.

I heard of the radio that Gary believes hes making far better progress than thought, does anyone know anything more? I did not quite catch all of the news.

When Colin Slater interviewed Shaun Derry after the match he said that Gary had been telling people in the hospitality suite that his injury wasn't as bad as first feared and Shaun Derry said that was right and that Gary was a fast healer and he was hoping to have him back in contention a lot early than previously feared.
