'Incredible Mentality’: Stuart Maynard Reflects on Notts County’s 4-2 Victory

PON_News

Notts County continued their impressive unbeaten start to the 2024-25 League Two campaign with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Bromley at Hayes Lane.

Despite going two goals down within six minutes, the Magpies stormed back, with Jodi Jones scoring twice, Dan Crowley adding a crucial goal, and Alassana Jatta sealing the win.

Head coach Stuart Maynard acknowledged the early difficulties but was full of praise for his team’s mentality and ability to stay composed under pressure. "We turned up today, and it was a very tricky pitch. The grass was long, there had been no water system on all day, so a couple of passes into midfield were a little bit short, and they scored from it. But the character and mentality that we have in this group – the way we stayed calm – was incredible," Maynard remarked.

The manager was unfazed by the early deficit, making tactical adjustments to wrest control of the game. He explained, "We had a mad five minutes, but after that, I thought we took total control of the game. Yes, it’s a really good performance to come on the road and get another three points. What we've got in the group is firepower, and we can outscore teams, so we showed another side to us today."

Jodi Jones was pivotal in the comeback, scoring a brace, including a critical penalty in the first half. Maynard highlighted his impact, noting, "You need big players in big moments, and Jodi stepped up today. I thought Dan [Crowley] was excellent as well. We’ve got a lot of unsung heroes in this group that won’t take the limelight but do an incredible job for the team."

Maynard also credited the defensive work of his players as Bromley tried to find a way back into the game. "The way we defended our box when we equalised was important. They had a few moments putting balls into our box, but the way that Platty [Matty Platt], Jacob [Bedeau], Louis [Macari], and even Bassie [Alex Bass] came for crosses and punched them away – it was a proper team performance."

With four consecutive wins and an unbeaten record, the team now sits at the top of the League Two table. When asked about the significance of being top so early in the season, Maynard reflected on the performance levels. "I think it means a lot to everyone because we’re having success, and it means we’re performing well on the pitch. When you come to a club of this size, there’s a certain demand, and if we keep performing to the levels we have, that’s what we get."

Looking ahead to the upcoming match against Gillingham, who have also had a strong start, Maynard called on the fans to continue backing the team. "We’re going to need Meadow Lane absolutely jam-packed because we need everyone. Our fans have been our 12th man, home and away, and when you go 2-0 down, it’s easy for fans to get disheartened, but ours don’t. They back the boys from minute one to the end."

The win not only strengthens Notts County’s position at the top of the table but also showcases the team’s resilience, ability to adapt, and strength in depth as they prepare for more challenges ahead.

it did take some getting used to the pitch but i thought bromley did well since they were used to it, the start was a shock but i had faith that our quality would make a real game of it. the defence improved massively as the game progressed, in the changes helped to sway the game more in our favour and i think stuart maynard made smart choices. it was a joy to see jodi jones have that drive to get us back into the game. we really deserved to pull off the come back!

It was pleasing to see Jodi Jones calmly convert the penalty. Their keeper almost got to it, but it was excellently placed by Jodi. The start can be like that; teams spring a surprise, and Bromley might feel they should have used the 2-0 lead more to their advantage. I don’t know, I feel it’s more frustrating to lead a game and lose it than to start on the back foot and impressively overturn it with a 4-2 victory. I have clips of the game and the highlights. Notts looked like they played some classy football.

It's great to see Notts handling the pressure so well, even when things start off poorly. Stuart Maynard’s tactical tweaks were spot on, and it shows how prepared and versatile the team is. Jodi Jones was fantastic with his brace, and Dan Crowley’s goal added the icing on the cake. Our defence also deserves praise for their resilience as Bromley pushed forward after we equalised. This kind of performance is what makes a team championship-calibre. Here's hoping we can maintain this unbeaten streak and continue to impress.

Alex Bass looked very frustrated after we conceded early. I don’t think we had much of a grip on the expectations of how the ball would be played across such a dry pitch. Maynard mentioned the longer grass, but I am pleased this wasn’t used as an excuse to explain defeat but more highlighted as a reason behind a difficult start. The way our players pulled themselves together was very impressive. Jodi Jones and Dan Crowley really linked together to help put us back into the game. It was also great to see Matt Palmer starting. He and David McGoldrick offered calmness, which made our play exciting to watch. It was the best away game I have been to!

Bromley did well. They deserve credit for picking up on our poor start and taking the lead. It must be frustrating for them, as it seems they often give the lead away. At 2-0, you don’t have to work as hard, but effort needs to be made to kill off the game. I felt surprised that they didn’t try harder to stop momentum. To a degree, they kept playing, and this came to our benefit. No idea why the Bromley player thought it was wise to foul Jodi Jones, but his decision to stay on the pitch and not go off for treatment was a wise decision. I thought the attacking display by Notts was superb. Even Bromley at times looked dangerous. I am very proud of the way we came back into the match. Stuart Maynard made smart changes, which did help change the way the game was being played.

The match showed Notts's resilience, determination & character to come back from such a bad start.

The match also demonstrated the strength of the Notts squad. To be able to bring on players that can potentially change a game is a great asset to have

Stuart's timings of the  substitutions were spot on too.

Last season Notts may have scored goals, but wouldn't have won a match like this.

The defence & defensive midfield are much more solid, but Notts attack hasn't lost none of its potency either.

It's important to be able to win matches like these when mistakes have been made, so for Notts to come through and play so well to fight back after the first 5 minutes, is very encouraging.

This victory is a testament to the fighting spirit within the Notts squad. Coming from two goals down and securing a 4-2 win is no mean feat. The conditions weren’t ideal, as Maynard mentioned, but the team adapted brilliantly. Respect to Jodi Jones for his crucial goals, especially the penalty. Dan Crowley was also excellent, contributing with a significant goal. Our defence, led by Matty Platt, stood firm when it really mattered. A thoroughly deserved win and a perfect way to stay top of the table. Onwards and upwards!

Well done to the lads for another fantastic performance! Conditions weren’t the best, but the team’s character shone through. Maynard's adjustments were key to turning the game around. Jodi Jones and Dan Crowley were standout performers, but let's not forget the solid defensive work from Platt and others. Four-in-a-row and top of the table says it all. Looking forward to seeing how we fare against Gillingham. Meadow Lane’s going to be buzzing with this form.

Notts County showed tremendous character coming back from a two-goal deficit. Stuart Maynard hinted at the challenging pitch conditions, yet the team adapted beautifully. Jodi Jones stepping up for crucial goals and Dan Crowley’s vital contribution were key moments. The defensive unit also deserves a shoutout for keeping Bromley at bay after our equaliser. Four consecutive wins and unbeaten – this is the stuff champions are made of. Can’t wait to see how we tackle Gillingham next. Keep flying high, Notts.

Maynard's tactical adjustments were spot on. Even after a shaky start, the team found their rhythm and took control of the game. The way they regrouped after the early goals speaks volumes about their mental fortitude. Jodi Jones' brace and Dan Crowley's effort were instrumental in turning the game around. Not to forget the defensive work by Matty Platt, Jacob Bedeau, and the rest who kept Bromley at bay. A commendable team performance through and through.

Notts are performing really well at the moment. Pre-season has been beneficial, but it shows those results don't mean much. Notts need to make this good start count. Going top twice is one thing, but keeping it up over a whole season is tough. I hope we can stay near the top three, but whatever happens, I'm proud of the squad and Stuart Maynard.
