Notts County Head Coach Stuart Maynard Reflects on Heartbreaking League Cup Defeat

PON_News

Notts County head coach Stuart Maynard has expressed his disappointment following a gut-wrenching League Cup exit at the hands of Shrewsbury Town.

Despite leading 2-0 at half-time, Maynard’s side were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw after 90 minutes before suffering an agonising defeat in a penalty shoot-out.

Maynard admitted that the result was difficult to take, especially considering the dominance his team displayed in the first half. "Disappointed," Maynard began. "I think the first half we probably could have put the game to bed. If we'd have come in at half-time probably three or 4-1 up, I thought it warranted it. The performance from the lads was excellent."

Indeed, Notts County were flying high in the first 45 minutes, playing with a fluidity and intensity that left their League One opponent's struggling to cope. However, as Maynard acknowledged, the challenge was always going to intensify in the second half. "It was always going to be a tricky second half," he said, noting the difficult conditions and the determination of Shrewsbury to respond. "You've got to give credit to them; they've come out and got a goal back."

Shrewsbury’s comeback was sparked by their increased intensity after the break, something Maynard was quick to acknowledge. "I think goals change the game," he explained. "When a goal goes in, it gives them a bit more energy. In the first half, every time they came to press us, we picked them off. Their intensity wasn't quite where it was. Once you get that goal, it gives you the energy to really go after the ball."

Despite the loss, Maynard was proud of his team's overall performance, especially given the calibre of their opponents. "There's loads of positives," he said. "I thought the lads that came into the team from the weekend were excellent. All over the pitch, I think everyone was excellent."

However, the head coach could not hide his frustration at the manner in which Shrewsbury scored their goals, particularly given that two of them resulted from defensive mistakes. "The Curtis [Curtis Edwards] mistake, we take full responsibility for it as a management team," Maynard stated, referring to a costly error by one of his defenders. "We're a possession-based team. He's got it caught under his feet. We want to play. If we didn't play like that in the first half, we wouldn't have potentially gone in 3-1 or 4-1 up at half-time."

Maynard’s commitment to his footballing philosophy remains strong, despite the setback. "We've got to keep being brave and keep wanting the ball, but we've got to learn from it," he said, highlighting the importance of continuing to play in a manner that can consistently win games, even if it means occasionally taking risks. "Curtis will learn from it. That's what you do in football. He's hurting now. He's disappointed. He feels like he's let the team down. But as a management team, we take responsibility for it."

As the match headed to penalties, Maynard admitted that fortune plays a significant role in such scenarios. "It's a lottery. You need luck," he said, reflecting on the tension of the shoot-out. "When their guy hits the bar, and it goes over, you think, 'Has that luck swung the other way?' Even Curtis' penalty, how unlucky is that? It hit his legs and spun the other way. That just normally goes in."

Looking ahead, Maynard emphasised the need for his team to recover quickly and focus on their upcoming fixtures. "They're disappointed, but the game's kind of gone now," he said. "We've got a game on Sunday. We've got to make sure we recover properly this week and then come up with a game plan for Fleetwood at home."

Despite the disappointment, Maynard remains optimistic about the future, buoyed by the resilience and quality his team displayed in the match. "We've shown at Tranmere and here today that we've got that character, that we really want to defend our box, and it will keep us in good stead," he concluded.

As Notts County turn their attention back to the league, the lessons from this rollercoaster of a cup tie will no doubt serve as valuable experience for the battles ahead.

i respect that stuart maynard acknowledges the mistakes and takes responsibility for the players. it could have turned out much differently, but shrewsbury did come knocking on the door and unfortunately they got back into it. notts managed to take the game to penalties, jatta did his best to level things and to score his pen. i just wished we had managed to do better in the shoot out.

The first half display by Notts was absolutely fantastic. Most have said that that display was the best under Stuart Maynard & I agree.

The second half wasn't so good & the multiple substitutions at a critical time in the game didn't help either.

But after having conceded those quick three goals in the second  half it was heartening that Notts rallied, and Jatta scored with a header from a corner..Hope he gets many goals like that.

Sad that Notts subsequently lost on penalties but everyone knows that penalties are lotteries anyway.

There are positives to take from this game and Stuart was keen to discus them. The performance in the first half then the character shown at the end.

The record  will show Notts achieved a creditable draw against league 1 opposition. Lessons will be learned too.

We move on now to our first home game & if Notts play as well as they did in that first half last night on Sunday, Notts have a great chance of getting a positive result in their first home game.

I would hate for the defeat to cast any ugly shadows over our next league game on Sunday against Fleetwood Town. It’s typical of cup games to be a game of two halves. Yes, it’s frustrating to give away a 2-0 lead. We have much to learn from it and need to remember that the players still need time to adjust to the new signings.

Pulling the game back ourselves shows we had spirit and didn’t just collapse. It’s very easy in football to fall apart when you concede 3 goals after leading for so long.

Stuart Maynard needs to stop this 3 subs on, 3 players off. Bring players on with gaps, give them a chance to get up to speed. I am not that disappointed; penalties are a horrible way to lose a game. I think Notts should have made the second round, but unfortunately, a good second-half performance from Shrewsbury and some defensive wobbles caused it to go to penalties. I don’t think Alex Bass would let two in, let alone three.

It’s not good to go 3-2 down when you had all the game to play for earlier when you led. That is the frustrating part, conceding 3 and the effort to win the challenges stopping. The press disappeared, and whilst I am pleased we managed to pull it back, I do feel sorry for some of the lads who played outstandingly well but were let down by poor decisions and individual mistakes.

There are a lot of positives if we wish to find them. I know it’s much easier to think of the negatives. Focus on the players’ mistakes that became costly, though those are things the players and coaching team need to address. For me, I want to praise the good effort that took us 2-0 up and for the spirit to get ourselves back on level terms. Notts going to penalties is a gamble on who would come out better, and if we had managed to win on them, we wouldn’t be as fussed over conceding 3. It’s still very early days, no need to panic.

The first half against Shrewsbury was absolutely thrilling. Seeing Notts play with such dominance gave us all hope. However, football is unpredictable, and the second half showed just that. Credit to Shrewsbury for their comeback, but it's unfortunate that defensive mistakes let us down. Penalties are always a gamble, and this time luck wasn't on our side. Stuart Maynard’s reflections were honest and eye-opening. Learning from these experiences is crucial, and the team's resilience is commendable. The focus now should be on the upcoming match against Fleetwood. We need to take the positives from this game and work on areas that need improvement. Keep the faith! Onwards and upwards!

Simply gutting to lose on penalties after such a strong first half. Notts were dominant, and it's a shame we couldn't hold onto the lead. Stuart Maynard’s admission of defensive errors is important; recognising and working on these will make us stronger. Shrewsbury’s comeback was inspired, and it reminds us how quickly games can turn. The penalty shoot-out is always unpredictable, and unfortunately, luck was against us. Nonetheless, there are positives to take.

It’s tough to see such a promising start turn into a heart-breaking defeat. The first half performance was near perfect, and it felt like we had Shrewsbury on the ropes. Stuart Maynard’s comments on taking responsibility for Curtis Edwards’ mistake are refreshing. It shows a great deal of leadership. Defensive lapses in the second half were a stark contrast to the fluid play in the first. It's a harsh reminder that football games can change in an instant. Penalty shoot-outs are always down to luck, and unfortunately, it didn’t go our way this time.

The first half performance was excellent, and the desire to fight back showed great character. It’s essential to learn from this and move forward. The upcoming match against Fleetwood offers a new opportunity to shine. Keep pushing, Notts!
