Did you know, one substitution for an injured player was allowed in English league football for the first time, from the beginning of the 1965/66 season?

Goalkeeper Mick Rose, who  made 109 appearances for Notts between 1967 &1970, became the first ever player to be substituted for an injury sustained in a match (21/08/65) when he played for Charlton.

He was replaced by Keith Peacock who became the first substitute to replace an injured player.

Only injured players were allowed to be substituted during the first two seasons following the  introduction of substitutions.

But it became apparent, that some players were feigning injury so a tactical substitution could be made.

The authorities caught on, and from the start of the 1967/68 season, the rule was changed to allow a substitution either for an injury, or for tactical reasons.

i read notts were involved with the offside ruling and throw ins. its nice to see notts being connected to the first sub, i think football is much better with being able to make them but i dont like the new rules that restrict when you can make changes.

very interesting fact, @Robbie.

No, I didn’t know that, but now I do. It’s interesting how Notts has been involved in the development of football.

I've heard it before, but it's not something I usually think about. It's an interesting fact. I wonder how much of the game Motts helped to create?

Found this on the web too.

Did you know?

Before 1891 only an indirect free kick could be awarded if an outfield player prevented a goal by hand balling it.

Notts County helped create the penalty kick
In February 1891, a Notts County player committed a blatant handball in the area to save a goal in the FA Cup Quarter Final against Stoke City.

After this, & similar incidents in Scotland & Ireland, the idea of sorting it out with a penalty kick was born.

Yes, I know that. Squads were much smaller back then, so there was no need for substitutes. Players usually played in multiple positions. I’ve been told all of this over the years.

@Fan of Big Tone I thought that was Harry Enfield.

@allardyces tash Here is Michael Caine himself explaining how it came about.

Did you Know that in the 1920s Notts County invented the offside trap; a defensive tactic designed to force the attacking team into an offside position?

This was later adopted by other managers including Argentina’s Osvaldo Zubeldía (1965) and Arsenal’s George Graham (1986-95) and went on to bore the ass off football fans worldwide.

I think the offside trap had it's zenith in the 70s, 80, & 90s. It doesn't seem to be used so much nowadays as it did then, but what Notts started in the 1920s became a big tactic all over the World, & is still used by teams to this day.

I thought that the first sub was an OTD, but I can't locate it and therefore must be mistaken. I am aware of it though.

I can’t say I knew much, but I do enjoy learning more about Notts and the club's history.

Yes, I am aware of these facts. Notts has been credited for many inventions in football. We were one of the original pioneers back in the day. It's a shame how far we have fallen as a club. I don't like the term "sleeping giant," but we are much bigger than League Two in history. We just need to earn our presence back.
