Nottingham Evening Post Coverage

For several years now the NEP Magpie coverage of Notts County has been beyond pathetic.

Minimum coverage of Notts County, even removing the tab to click on. It is as if they Notts do not exist.

The internet has revolutionised how we access news, and how businesses make money from it. But the NEP coverage of Notts makes them look what they are, a skeleton crew of junior writers who scrawl Facebook for stories to regurgitate.  This was evidenced in the recent story that stated “Former Notts County boss Luke Williams is now working at Bristol Airport.” The misleading article skewered the angle that he had fallen on tough times but had the dignity to work. Utter claptrap, he volunteered, helping disabled people access the airport.

I recall print edition copies of the Post over past eras gave both clubs decent coverage. But a search of Notts County news on Google gives news about Notts County on Derbyshire, Portsmouth, Aberdeen and Yorkshire media outlets giving news around Notts County transfers.

It has to be said the NEP is failing the city.

The NEP is inundated with news when someone farts at the City Ground

We have Notts County Talk, The Magpie Circle, Pride of Nottingham, Facebook and Twitter which give us fans a pretty decent account. BBC radio Notts also gives Notts coverage, but like the Post is Red. But the fact the NEP ignores Notts, is a failing, a failing which fails the city.

I gave up reading the NEP years ago either the paper or online, it wasn’t dubbed the “red rag” for nothing, these days newspapers are becoming obsolete especially local newspapers, I know, I used to work on them.

I used to look forward to getting the Football post every Saturday evening, that used to have great coverage of Notts after every Saturday match.

It was a great publication, a great read & had a great following. It was sad when it ceased publication in 1999. Is it really 26 years ago.

Ah yes the good old Football Post, those were the days @Robbie , walk out the match at full time, walk into town and they’d be selling them on the streets, most of it was pre printed they just needed the results and match reports before they could go out on the streets. Can you remember the pink broadsheet before it turned white tabloid?

I think I’ve still got some in the loft amongst my memorabilia.

Yes, those were the days, When I was travelling home from a match along Mansfield Road, @Fan of Big Tone there was a news agent where I would stop to pick a Football post up.

Sometimes it had arrived, but on other occasions you had to wait a little while for the roll of papers to arrive.

It still confuses me even now why they have never published a digital addition of the football post. I'm sure they'd be a market for it

WOW @Fan of Big Tone and @Robbie you guys have stirred some memories. A mate of mine used to go round the streets of our local town with a bag full of the Football Post (pink coloured) propped on his pushbikes handle bars, and I'd help when I could. We'd peddle round the estates shouting at the top of our voices FOOTBALL POST . The Local Newsagent Mr Rennie would pay my mate and he'd buy me a Bag of Sweets for helping him. Happy Days.

Nottinghamshire Live [NEP] isn’t worth paying attention to. It’s outdated and doesn’t come close to the standards that proper papers used to set. The site itself is poor. I never bother with it.

I read the official site instead. NEP’s best days are long gone. Now, it’s only there to make money, not to tell people what’s going on.

The quality feels lazy. I did think Leigh Curtis did a few good things, and so did the lad who came after him, but their focus doesn’t seem to match what we care about as fans. I’ll give credit when it’s due. That goes for Ratio Nottingham and BBC Sport as well. When they do something good, I’ll say so.

I just don’t see the point of buying a paper that ends up in the bin after a quick read. The website is off-putting too. There are far too many spammy adverts to bother with it.

Oh oh oh ohhhhh, everywhere where we go, watching super County putting on a show!

It as always been a Red Rag. I one time counted how many articles Forest had and how many Notts had. 33 (in a day) for the Red Dogs plus five different Reporters covering them. And 5 for Notts (if they were lucky). Written by some numbskull who never bothered to look into the Magpies history and referred to Notts Greatest Owner as Derek Parvis. There used to be a guy called Lee Curtis who covered Notts, decent Articles and full match coverage. When he left the Notts coverage went down the Dip. I not sure but I think he covers Derby now.

Notts could get Promoted each year from League 2 to the Premier League, win the Premier League Title, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Champions League all in one season, and the NEP might just mention it in passing, preferring to tell it's readers how many cups of Tea the Red Dogs owner drinks a day.

I don’t take any notice of it, and I haven’t for years. They often recycle old stories by adding bits that were written before and pretending it’s still news. The quality isn’t great. It feels lazy, and the standard has really dropped.

It’s not just the Nottingham Post either, most newspapers seem to follow the same pattern.

The quality of local sports journalism generally has been on a downward trajectory for a very long time. The NEP stopped being impartial and balanced regarding Notts & the other lot years ago.

I stopped reading it at least 15 years ago.

The old FP was fantastic - the stop press even covered any late goals most of the time too. All local league tables and match reports were included too, remember the MAA, Notts Alliance, Amateur League etc?

i wonder why they dont try to bring back the football post, i know it would be somewhat unbearable with mansfield and forest being both above us. it would be interesting to see how it could help improve things for notts though. i would also be interested in learning more about local clubs like basfrod united, hucknall town etc.

They could at least have a digital addition. It wasn't just the major clubs they covered in the County, but also the smaller clubs which you have to go searching for now.
