Manager Shaun Derry has asked for a sense of realism after the Swindon loss...

The Magpies lost 3-0 to Swindon Town as the Robins climbed to the top of the league and the boss wants everyone connected to the club to realise how far they have come in a short space of time.

He told BBC Radio Nottingham post-match that it was easy to forget their position just 12 months ago and praised his side for where they sit now, seventh in League One.

Meanwhile Derry also praised the visitors after a fantastic display.

He said: "We are obviously disappointed. It has been and I'm hoping it will continue to be a successful season for us, but we have got to take our medicine today.

"Fair credit to Swindon. They are the best team I've seen at this level.

"They played fantastically well.

"It hurts, but they played really well, we didn't perform as well as we could do. That's where we are and we need people here to have a sense of realism.

Why is it when we lose or perform badly 'realism' is slapped around?

I might predict a win, however this is because of how well we have been doing. I honestly felt our experience would count for something myself, I wouldn't be disappointed with losing had we had not done it the way we did. The defending was poor, that's what disappointed me because before their goal we looked like we might have stunned them.

We pretty much allowed them to dominate the game, we just stood off them and allowed them to attack.

Swindon played classy, we played very poor. There's no comparison, yet I do feel when you ask for backing and say that last year won't be repeated. Some fans will expect Notts to be better, personally I accept the defeat it happens.

I just don't like this, it's like poking a wound when there's no need to do so.

Good morning Joe.

It looks as if you came up against a Swindon Town that was firing on all cylinders. We have threatened to get this level of result many times this season and have acheived several excellent scores. Sometimes, however, it is totally wrong and embarrassing to watch.

We are a year ahead of you so far as development is concerned: do not be too despondent.

Is it true that Shaun Derry shook all our players by the hand as they left the pitch?

It is indeed, he stood by the tunnel and shook every one of your lads by the hand, which I think is a show of class during a tough moment.

You were very good yesterday, if anybody manages to finish above you they'll win this league. It was a tough day for us but to be honest you couldn't help but just sit and admire Swindon's football. Class outfit, as you say who are at least a year ahead of us in terms of development. That level really is what we should aspire to reach. Good luck for the rest of the season, I hope you go up. You deserve it on that yesterday

I don't know about poking a wound, he's just telling it like it was but I'm not sure why he is referring to people needing a sense of realism, I didn't hear any booing of the players just the referee, I think most of the crowd accepted the fact that we were beaten by a better team.

I think most Notts fans do have a sense of realism, we realise that the team can't be expected to win every match and most people are quite happy with the way things are progressing compared to last season.

i personally think its the wrong comment to make, as it reads negatively.

we all support the team, nobody likes losing and i am sure its the same for sd but we are grounded. we accept we will lose, only a handful in comparison believe we are real madrid or man city.

we was poor yesterday, thats football.

you have to expect a bit of this, i agree with joe.

I reckon SD & GA know that our true position lies at around 13th - 14th, also they are expecting a very lean festive period  which will most probably leave us in one of those positions and they don't want the crowd to get on their backs leading RT to get itchy shall we say.

He missed the opportunity to come out & say that we are only going to be a mid table team when the vast majority would have not only accepted it but enjoyed this period of league loftiness for all it's worth.

All experience in the end, maybe he would given the opportunity again

I think you're just about spot on there @NorthantsPie.At least, come the end of the season, SD and GA have something to build on rather than more or less starting from scratch.Add to that the experience they have gained this season and the 'work in progress' should become a serious promotion prospect. If Notts are near the top of the league with a team that is expected to be in that position next season SD will then have to change his aftermatch comments.

He won't comment on poor refs, he handles press talks very well with regards to opposition teams but I do feel he should reflect on the support we have. That's my only criticism, it's not the fact we lost.

Had we have played very well, I'd be proud even if they had scored 5!

I just think there's a balance between realism and hope, I didn't like the comments made by SD and I'm not going to bubble wrap my opinion.

Any other manager would have a back lash from it.

The crowd only booed after the players exited the pitch and the officials hung back before walking off, that's when people booed and it was because the official was shocking. If anything, I would hope he could accept that we wasn't in the running and that the performance wasn't our best. We was very poor! Also, I think I'd be safe to say had Swindon not been on fire or as good it would have also caused many comments.

I think Shaun Derry got his tactics wrong on Saturday.

There is a mix of hope and realism around Notts at the moment, I dont think there needs to be anything more than appreciation for how we are doing. I am starting to suspect it wont last but he should do whatever it takes. His job is to win games, worry less about realism and focus on the football.

Derry's bound to get the tactics wrong at times. I accept that, along with results and even poor performances.

@Drivingmenotts said to me earlier, it was poor and mentioned the tactics being wrong. We discussed Curtis Thompson, who gives 100% but he's no defender and I agree he should be played in midfield or only in defence against weaker oppositions.

I'm not sure how many goals he could be blamed for, I felt the first goal was due to someone's positioning/awarness and woeful defending.

This isn't a witch hunt but a discussion, Derry tends to be right more than he isn't.
