Some folk are never satisfied eh? Now as kids it was great to have a nice train set to play with, but two train sets, well that was just bloomin greedy...

Enter Mike Ashley...http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/rangers/11295462/Mike-Ashley-could-control-Rangers-and-Newcastle-United-within-weeks.html

I am sure this will be against the rules here in England also.

Mike Ashley gets a lot of stick, most of it warranted.

BUT

from a business point of view owning Rangers is a no-brainer for him. Been through loads of turmoil for past few years, no structure to dismantle, in a few years excellent chance of champions league football. An advertisers dream at Rangers.

Yes Sports Direct will be in their faces at every turn, but surely that's the point?

Excellent brand awareness move by him.

If I had his cash and wanted advertising north of the border I would probably do the same thing, while they are still crippled and ready to fly again in the next couple of years,

was mike ashley the chairman of newcastle?

Wait, I thought this was against the rules of the gods above?

I was under the impression you could not own two clubs or be tied with another, was it not Watford who got punished for having an Italian owner who also owned an Italian side? I know they fed players to Watford, not sure how that panned out but I don't like Mike Ashley, he's one of them people after personal gains and he doesn't seem to care about the clubs he's associated in.

I bet Newcastle fans are hoping he jumps ship, I suspect Rangers fans wouldn't mind that.

Whilst I understand the business aspect this still seems a bit dodgy/

still is liampie,

The article reads that although he is breaking the rules as such, there are technicalities which a good lawyer can deal with.

Newcastle fans are a strange breed in the sense that they are all or nothing. One win and the club owner and manager are gods. Lose one and they become devils.

Don't like Ashley personally but he has kept Newcastle up there on a regular basis with his stable manager choice (even though tbh I'm not that keen on Pardew either!!!)

and I know when I go to the Sports Direct shop at Shirebrook (which is massive if you've never been) it costs me a shed load as you can't get away from the cheap deals.

You can basically kit yourself out with most things there and everything is always on a deal!

The English and Scottish FAs are separate, so from a football governance point of view it's not very different to Vincent Tan owning both Cardiff and FK Sarajevo, or Watford's owners. I think the problem with owning arises when both of them are in European competition and could potentially play each other. Once Rangers hit the big time he may well look to sell Newcastle, or "sell" the club to a close associate so he can keep a finger in the pie.

Mike Ashley is a canny operator, you've got to give him that. He's on the verge of picking up one of football's biggest names on the cheap, with the distinct possibility of future Champions League revenue.

@Blackville and I own Borussia Monchengladbach (along with about 55 000 others) so it really is our club. That's how it should be, but impossible to bring such a system into UK football now thanks to the FA.

Please do not mention this, you will give the Trust ideas.

I don't think it is smart for investors to have interests in two clubs.

He will opt for Rangers if he requires to make a decision but selling Newcastle will not be easy, good crowds and fan base but without serious investment they will soon start to struggle again and perhaps face a season or two in the championship.

Rangers are on the up and good luck to them, what happened was harsh on them despite the money issues.

whats next then, Dennis Wise as Manager?

I think the moment he went there in an 'advisory' capacity it was guaranteed he'd end up running the club.

Another one on Mike Ashley's scoresheet!

Something has to happen, Rangers fans are still suffering over this, the club could still fold... It is staggering the amount of Money they are still losing... deals must have been done, surely if they called in a half decent administrator, it would have been their job to rationalise, re-structure and re-finance to a level that was sustainable...

Maybe I am wrong but I see this as abject failure on the part of the board, the administrators and also a failing of society.

The problem with Rangers as far as i see it is that there are far too many people covering their own personal interests and grudges that unless they change things drastically they will end up out of business for good and Ibrox will become swanky new flats.

Whatever you think of Ashley he has turned Newcastle into a stable club and he is the only person who is seriously interested now that they have said no to the American guy, what other options do they have??

Posted

@Northants Pie I have no idea what they are going to do, Mike Ashley as you say has kept Newcastle in the position they are, admittedly with great personal benefit, and you would think that a struggling club which Rangers are would welcome this. The problem may also lie within the sectarian roots and undercurrent up there. Are the SFA having judgement clouded by this, by contempt for the club itself or what???

The SFA did them a massive favour not putting them out of business when they should have, had it been another club other than Rangers or Celtic you would most probably find the outcome very different indeed.

As far as I see it the current board are holding out for what they are never going to get, the 1st and biggest issue being a position once the club is taken over, 2nd being a return on their investment and 3rd settling long held grudges and little scores

Was it the SFA that saved them, my belief is that it was the Courts. The SFA were swayed by a portion of other clubs, who through hatred or jealousy wanted Rangers Punished.....

It looks as if Mike Ashley will be lending the club money... Ibrox not to be used as security.

Surely to god, unless something gets seriously sorted out though, this is just throwing good after bad...
