Shaun Derry eager to introduce young talent into his Notts County side

Shaun Derry wants more of Notts County's young talent to make his starting line-up this season after Colby Bishop's successful breakthrough into the first-team squad.

The Magpies boss is keeping a close eye on the pool of players in the club's academy to see if any can make the grade.

Derry has shown he is not afraid to give youth a chance, having given striker Bishop his debut against MK Dons on Boxing Day.

Youngsters will only improve with game time, though I do feel more should be done in the early stages to get those fresh faces into League Two and the top conference division.

Then they can come back and have less pressure on themselves because they would have at least some experience.

I also feel that if they're good enough they will play, naturally if you get a player with a lot of skill and can be bled into the squad its worthwhile but many aren't quite at that stage and there's a huge difference between youth/reserve football to actual first team football. It would be nice if fans tried to encourage more rather than becoming abusive over mistakes, the times I've heard foul language (with with Super Pie nearby) directed towards players like Curtis Thompson.

In my opinion very few will be able to make the grade straight into first team football or even able to sit on the bench.

When they become 'professional' ship them out and get them the best possible experience available to them.

I love seeing us selecting our own produced players and I do dream of the day when all are playing because they're good enough. We could then mix experience, along with high earners and dream the dream.

I really hope Colby Bishop makes the grade, he's impressed me.

Same old for me, did he not say this when he arrived?

Yet he played his strongest side which is understandable. In the pre season he looked to be mixing things up, giving lads a chance which the likes of Balmy shined but once the season started very few was seen. I dont understand why he chooses to play them out of position?

Lets hope he can help settle some, it would be nice for Kyle Dixon to be in the same light as some others who appear to be favoured.

Well that will be next season now.

curtis thompson looks very skillful, he has bulked up a bit and offers some pace.

i dont like how sd players him at right back all the time.

i hope he does start to play the youngsters because some of the more senior players could do with being rested for the bigger games. lets hope colby can be the striker we have all wanted, that would be nice.

I have my doubts about him, I think he will struggle to get chances unless something gives.

@Northants Pie comments in his season review stands out though.

Lets give the lad a chance and see what he can do with our full backing. If he makes mistakes I just hope people accept it and then we shall see if Colby takes his chance.

That should be the point with every player, they are never going to be willing to try something different in games if they are going to get a massive backlash from the fans if it goes wrong, I live for the day when at any Notts game anywhere in the country we applaud the great & good whilst encouraging the poor and sometimes ill judged.

Put yourself in their position, you would much rather be appreciated for trying than castigated for it

On a sightly lighter side of life, he does look like most decent centre forwards.....

Am I the only one who feels the club are putting too much pressure on him?

Usaully when that happens there is only one thing to expect. I dont see Derry giving many a chance even when we reach 50 points, he will always play it safe until they are properly good enough.

Rome wasn't built in a day, similarly you cannot expect much of the younger lads when they come straight in (IMO).

As fans we kind of want success, and want it now, or at least that is how fans are perceived...

It takes time, and if we have the right management in place (I believe we do) and patience from the Chairman (asking a lot I know ;)) then we may see one golden nugget come through each season...

Any more than that and for a club of our size and stature and we would be in dreamland, oh and in the money..
