Notts County top managerial change table from last 20 years

Over the last 20 years, Notts County have changed managers more times than any other team in the Premier League and Football League.

Since 1997, the Magpies have had 23 different permanent bosses at the helm, two ahead of Crystal Palace who are on 19, Press Association Sport has found.

What do you make of being top of this dubious table?

Bear in mind that at least four of them walked away of their own accord, when otherwise they would've kept their jobs.

And the 23 managers don't even include caretakers! https://www.nottscountyfc.co.uk/club/history/managers/

Kevin Nolan hasn't even been in the post for a year yet he's already outlasted our last four managers. If he makes it to the end of the season he'll be our longest-serving manager for a decade.

I think our problem is not so much sacking managers as appointing the wrong ones. How many sackings have you really disagreed with in that time? Allen maybe, Short possibly (I never had the feeling he was going to lead us to glory, but he needed more time than he got), Curle and Moniz are maybe debatable. Any others? Considering we've fired 18 managers in this time that's not many! When it comes to appointing managers we've made pretty much every mistake in the book, ranging from an over-reliance on past record (Gudjon, Sheridan) to appointments based on little more than a hunch (Brazil, Kiwomya, the Scot whose name shall not be mentioned).

Say 'We are top of the league, say we are top of the league!'

Jocky Scott? He wasn't that bad surely?!?

In all seriousness instant success is now how football works, I remember that Alex Ferguson was very close to being sacked at Man Utd, but for winning the FA cup (in 1990) after being there for over three years and that is more time than modern managers would last at a club of that status.

It has been a major revolving door at Notts for way too long and I can't think of any manager that has lasted 3 years at Notts since Warnock left, nearly 25 years ago. Big Sam would have done but for the Bolton job and I would guess that Nolan is probably in a pretty strong position to do so, but can see him going on to better things inside the next two years.

The only sackings I think I have disagreed with since Warnock are Walker, Allen and Curle. Walker had a bad start to the season and had lost his main play maker in Draper. Allen had a great rapport with players and fans, but has been proven to have a short shelf life at clubs and Curle was doing a half decent job except for the boring football at home games turning fans away.

Not Scott. He thoroughly deserved the sack. The other one ;)

Jocky Scott had a very good record when he joined us and was worth a punt. He was dreadful though. He finally put paid to the momentum gathered over the Allardyce years, assembling an expensive team that just didn't work (although there may have been some interference from above) and playing some truly dire football. Team spirit broke down, Scott started bickering with the fans behind him at home games and we were just above the relegation zone and sliding when he was sacked. Gary Brazil then cemented our place at the foot of the table before Billy Deardon got us out of trouble that season.

When Allen was sacked Curle came in, took us on a great run and nearly got us into the play-offs. We were in a similar position when Curle was fired the following season - I think his sacking was an attempt by Ray Trew to push us into the play-offs more than anything else. It was very harsh in view of his 45% win rate, but I think more people would have been sympathetic if more of those wins had been gained at home. And Allen was sacked with us in a FAR better position than when he found us. Those two sackings marked the start of a decline that would ultimately see the Trews leave the club with us near the bottom of the league.

@DangerousSausageAlways thought Jocky wasn't in control, it just seemed that Storrie was playing kingmaker... Full credit to Jocky for bringing in Anders Jacobsen, one of the best centre halfs Notts have had...and his sudden disappearance in January that season, seemed to hint at the financial troubles to come

Managers leave for a reason, so I think the trigger happy days of beheading managers for the sake of it or for that months flavour of the month is long gone. Thank god for that! Seriously, we are Notts County! Crystal Palace is somewhat understandable, although kind of a shock none the less but a League Two team like us having that amount of managers is an absolute joke.

You can really understand why we have been damaged and desperate for the stability which we appear to have right now.

I said to JJ yesterday though, Alan Hardy needs to think about the bigger picture during any tough spells and just focus on the right call. Sometimes we need to stand by the manager, which a lot of these are people who have been sacked. Can we just not count John Sheridan please?

Its a shambles.

No wonder we have struggled. Does anyone actually know who these managers fall under? Not that Ray Trew won't be the worst when it comes to the dismissals.

Good point, Jacobsen was a real beast at the back and it was a shame to see him go. On the flip side he also brought Ian Hamilton to the club and played him every week! Scott also signed his son-in-law, goalkeeper Stuart Garden, who was actually OK despite looking like a Sunday league keeper.
