What type of striker should the club be looking to sign come January?

There's no doubt that we need other options upfront, I share the concern about the two main strikers - yet I do feel Jonathan Forte can play a part (all things we have discussed before).

However, appearing on BBC Radio Nottingham's Match Talk - the question of 'does Notts need a poacher?' cropped up.

So I'm wondering what the PON community thinks, do we need a poacher? Do we need a natural finisher? Someone with strength or pace?

A 20+ striker is a rare thing in this division, as is a player with all the above qualities and a-side from the ones mentioned. There's plenty of other types.

So, what are the main qualities we need to bring in?

It's a bit tricky because even though our options up front could do with a boost, the team is playing well as it is. Each of the strikers is chipping in with goals while we have plenty from midfield in Grant and Yates, plus good set piece takers in Grant and Dickinson.

I think the main thing we need at this stage of the season is a suitable back-up striker who can cover for Stead or Ameobi, so I'd say similar traits to them - strong, tall, good with layoffs and a decent finisher in his own right. Can't think of any examples off the top of my head but maybe it could be someone on loan, mid-late 20s, who's happy to start once every 2/3 games and come on at about 60-70 minutes.

The summer would be the best time to invest properly in a new player but for now you don't want anything which may unsettle the pecking order up front, so yeah, a suitable back-up on loan or a deal until the end of the season would be my tip.

Such a tough question as we don't know what Nolan is thinking. I will agree with @Joe Jonesthat the worry is Stead and Ameobi getting injured, but I would look for an upgrade on them, rather than backup.

It also depends on Forte, if he is off in January we will also need to replace him as well as I feel we are short of variety up front.

We need to find someone that can improve the first XI, rather than bringing in a squad player, otherwise there is no point in signing anyone.

Personally, I think we need a young striker that can learn of the existing players.

So the qualities for me are must that he would be fast, strong and able to make the physical approach that the common League Two defender is known for. I personally think the ideal age range would be between 21-24, and we are in a fantastic position to teach a young hungry striker. I am not so worried about how prolific they can be, under the right circumstances they can improve their finishing.

Strikers thrive on seasons like this, so the fact is they'll only grow in confidence with goals and a winning mentality.

Plus as I say, we have three very good strikers that this player can learn from. Clearly Saunders isn't considered this player, and if Forte does leave - I would prefer to see someone with qualities come in but on a much younger scale.

*Fast
*Good at reading the game
*Can create space to work off

So pace is paramount to the club as its an area we actually lack.

Letting Forte leave would be madness. Even if he does want to leave, I'd urge him to stay on and try to get a promotion/championship medal with Notts before then assessing his options in the summer. But I hope the club keeps him on for the next six months because he's a valuable asset to the team.

I think the need is there for an addition or two strikers if we lost Forte , think the mentality of anyone coming in needs to be like we have , I don't feel it would upset a mature and professional strike force we already have if we had an addition that was able to go straight into the team , but I don't think that is likely as both Stead and Ameobi are held in high regard , so for me a strong pacey front man as back up but capable to drop in , this management lark is not easy so I'll be trusting in Mr Nolan , done great so far .

We need a striker who is able to score without a great amount of service, so first touch and good eye for goal is a must for me.

i think we could continue as we are provided we did not allow forte to go.

he does seem to be unlucky and i think he is one of the best players at the club with the natural knack of scoring goals. if we are worried or aiming to improve further, i would hope we could sign a striker maybe from the non league and give them a chance.

A striker that doesn't stray from the box would be nice.

Both Stead and Ameobi drift back and don't quite have the legs to get back up if we do break, countless times these two get caught out by this but I don't fault the either players work rate.

I just feel that someone with a bit of speed about them would be beneficial, if they remain in a position of a natural striker and was good at their position I think they would score. I don't rate Alessandra as a striker, I don't think he has a lot of pace and he's knackered when it comes to striking the ball. He makes a better winger, so I hope we get someone who can have similar traits as to what I mentioned.

I cannot see the club gambling and allowing Forte to leave unless they have players signed or lined up.

If he does leave it would need for two strikers to come in, so one could be young and fast. The other a more natural goalscorer. I have to add it seems pointless to let a player who can score already leave the club. Not playing him seems madness! Alan Smith and Lewis Alessandra have got the nod ahead of him.

You just can't make sense of it, but then again we have wingers and bypass them!

We need a natural goal scoring striker, Stead and Ameobi are good from penalties and set pieces, we need that, Lee Hughes type of striker that has abit of everything..
