A glimmer of hope?

League 2 looking to finish immediately, use points per game and still do playoffs and relegation?

I'm sure we'd be second or third with points per game I read somewhere, so maybe a glimmer of hope as the league below would probably need to jump into line with promotion and relegation spots to balance the leagues out.

Maybe not then as rumours of no relegation in L2 but allowing promotions. Wonder how that'll go if L1 decide differently?

I can see court cases galore here from Barrow etc...

I can't see how you can promote 4 teams and not relegate anyone. It's yet to be ratified by the FA and I'm sure I saw statement in relation to the Championship that they were still intending to promote and relegate teams.

That said I'm really sceptical we'll get any play-offs this season, especially in our league shouldn't that final have been this weekend? Then the players are out of contract not long after. That's effectively your deadline, some clubs just won't be able to keep players on. You can't delay it for months and then have the play-offs where one team is filled with youth players because it's all they can afford.

In the NL, playoffs are a non-starter as at many teams contracts run out at the end of April. At Solihull, for instance, 15 players have been released and only 9 are on their books. How is fair competition possible?

Holding playoffs in the proper league could be a mess too and would result in an uneven number of teams going up. A sensible solution would be to promote only the teams in automatic promotion spots. That way you'd have 22 teams in the PL, 24 in the Championship and League One and 22 in League Two, provided Barrow are invited in. In that scenario we might also be invited in to make up the 24, but I'm not getting excited about that.

Possibly another glimmer of hope for Notts? If relegation, promotion and playoffs are enforced in EFL then the NL will follow suit imo.
Maybe a chance to get a playoff game sorted, even if it is behind closed doors.

This is my view perfectly summed up by Menzinho.

I cannot see how any teams can be promoted without some clubs being relegated.

The key here is that the EFL has sought guarantees from the NL that they can complete next season. If such guarantee is not forthcoming, St Evenage could remain in EFL2

How can NL budget if no gate money coming in? NL could possibly collapse... hence the need for EFL's guarantee to complete the season

With the playoffs happening, hopefully Notts can pick up from where they had left and come back strong.

It would be some achievement to end this season in such a positive way.

Looks like Play offs for NL will be needed and confirmed tomorrow. So there is a real possibility we may get something from this season!

They'd better call the players in for full training as quick as now!

Hope they've got streaming sorted for the games!

Interesting. Some thoughts:

- If we are going to be in the play-offs, the players need to be in training. But how? According to the rules, six people from different households can exercise together, so that'll permit training in small groups. But what about playing? The rules are there to protect people after all, and footballers should be no exception. I assume there'll be a similar testing/quarantine system in place as in Germany to prevent infection.

- How lucky are Wycombe? They've jumped from 8th to 3rd, basically because they had a game in hand!

- I hope the games are streamed somehow, as I can't get BT Sport over here...

- But most importantly of all, this has consequences for the PON prediction league. I'll be in touch ;)

So the National League's proposal on how to end the season is finally in! Clubs have until Monday to vote, this is what they are voting on:

The season will be decided on PPG, teams in 1st are then promoted (no play-offs/relegation in the NL North/South).

Image

All NL league clubs get a vote. 4 votes for the NL North, 4 votes for the NL South (no idea why!?). 17 Votes needed for it to be passed!

Very harsh on the North/South teams, and I honestly think some sort of play-off should be used to decide relegation as well...

From a purely selfish point of view, it's probably the best outcome for Notts.

From our point of view...In a normal season, it would be good for us. I actually feel being in the semi now automatically gives us a disadvantage. Yeovil or Barnet would have had one more competitive game to get rid of the ring rustiness.

Also think North and South are likely to rebel. I would be up in arms if I was a York fan (although I'm hearing they've tabled an immediate amendment.)

I agree with this. Usually, we'd have a few extra days to recuperate while our semi-final opponent runs themselves ragged. But in this case it'll be our first competitive game for three months. I wonder if it would be possible to play a friendly before this? Or even the FA Trophy semi? The system is design to give the teams in second and third an advantage, but now it seems to do the opposite.

We had a similar case in the German cup this week - Saarbrücken (just promoted to the third division) played Leverkusen in the semi-final. Saarbrücken hadn't played a competitive match since early March, Leverkusen already had four or five Bundesliga matches under their belt. It was a farce and totally unfair.

Without knowing the squad status of the other two clubs, I can’t see it being anything but a disadvantage.

We have done well to retain 24 players who we could move forward with next season with only a little tinkering around the edges (or the centre of the park to be more accurate!)

Not sure how Yeovil or Barnet have done with player retention. I know a lot of clubs had to let players go, but you’d hope a team in with a chance could retain their best squad?

We desperately need a few friendlies before we go into this match. Crucial imo.

I'm not sure one game will make a huge difference in my opinion, if we've got a squad of 24 you can play as many games as you like if it's purely about getting the minutes in the legs. And now that football is getting underway again in England it's likely we'll be able to organise a friendly. I don't see how the league can do it any other way unless we want to nominate ourselves to take the position of either Barnet or Yeovil?

Anyway it looks like we won’t be hearing anything too soon.

“National League clubs have not received the ordinary resolution or voting form. They’ve not had any formal communication from the League explaining why they weren’t sent out on Friday as planned.”

No idea what's going on there...

It's ironic that Barnet's issues with their playing surface has actually worked in their favour and propelled them into the playoffs. Sometimes it's better to be lucky.........

As far as I'm aware, Notts and Yeovil are the only clubs in the division where player contracts end at the end of June. At all the others it's the end of April. I don't know what state Barnet are in, but some clubs will be better equipped to play the play-offs than others.

So, the play-offs are happening. The semi-final is to be played by 18 July, and the final by 31 July. We are two wins away from the promised land of League Two.

I really hope we get through these games and go up. Just to get out of this tin pot league. Nothing more than a total farce!
couldn't organise a pee up in a brewery. Took such a long time to come to logical conclusions.

Barnet have got lucky though. Being rewarded for games being called off! Stockport must be cross!

still hungover after celebrating last night - hope you guys can stop Harrogate and join us in League 2 next season.

Obviously delighted that the playoffs are going ahead. Notts are in a good place and we have plenty of reason to be optimistic.

So Notts are now 2 weeks into training, Ardley has said in an interview no dates have been confirmed for the playoffs.

This is an update from Ollie Bayliss, a non-league correspondent:

"No news regarding the FA ratifying the National League’s PPG decision. Promotions & playoffs can’t happen until the FA Council vote to support the League’s resolution"

So Barrow haven't technically been promoted yet either! What the hell is going on?

The whole thing has been a farce from beginning to end!
