The Deano Debate

For me, Dean Leacock is one of our big players. He's someone I expect a lot from, mainly due to the fact at this level he should be reliable. This season he hasn't impressed me much at all, there's been times we've needed him and he's lacked any sort of interest. Some performances have been blamed due to injury, tiredness and even being ill, however for me - for such a big named player we haven't missed him.

He should be the type of player exactly how we see Gary Liddle.

Massive blow for us, our fans discussed his absence and was probably the main thing I heard yesterday (a-side from Jack & Callum future with us).

Deano just hasn't been the same player this season, yesterday he put a reasonable performance in but still he lacked the passion you would expect from the Captain. At no point did he try to fire up the players, this is something we need. After going a goal down his response should have been pure annoyance and desire to inspire the lads to correct things.

I don't blame him for our season, he's sadly one of many contributing factors but it's an interesting area to debate. I don't think he should be our captain - I'd go as far as he shouldn't be starting as frequently as he does. JCR's time injured and benched did him the world of good, why is Deano to good for this?

I agree with what you said here Joe, Dean Leacock has not applied himself this season. He could influence games, via a calm and clear experienced voice. No offense to Super Ram but after his time with Derby, he should be used to this type of situation.

A couple of rams fans I know, they do not like him. They have told me stories about him which would make heads turn!

Good player on his day but when the tough gets going, he splits.

he will be gone by the end of the season, deano wont stay with us if we get relegated and unless we sign players to push for play offs, he will want to go to a team who stands a better chance.

might explain why he focus more on his personal appearance rather than his performances.

it's all very sad, but true.

His performances have been inconsistent at best at a time when we need players to stand up and be counted.

I hope he comes good at some point, but on current attitude and form maybe a new start may be best for both parties?

Unfortunately we have to stick with him for now because he is one of the few experienced players left at the club. As others have said at the end of the season he'll be off regardless of which division we're in.

Welcome response and one I agree with upto a point. I think giving Manny a try, ahead of Deano would be a good start. Not in the games which are big, I'd have put Sheehan on the left again but with his dismissal it provides Leacock a get out of jail card.

We will mostly likely stick with him, though not for the reason you stated sadly.

Leacock is one of the biggest disappointments of this season. I certainly thought last season he was a player that was going to make the Centre Back position his own.

This season he has capitulated. It saddens me that the old gaurd such as Mike Edwards would be putting in a much better show than this character has, especially when things have gone wrong. He is badly out of form and has been for a long time.

Agree with others sentiments that he won't hang around at all if we do get relegated.

The times I have seen Leacock live this season (not many) he has looked more interested in trying to pick a fight. If he could apply himself to the job in hand with the same level of enthusiasm then he would be a good centre half.

Frankly, though I agree, with others. He will not be here next season, it will be regrettable but I can see his performances improving greatly so as to put himself in the shop window later on.

I don't like his attitude at all. No leadership, no fight, just gets angry and makes silly fouls. Not a good player for us this year.

I don't doubt the truth of this rather unanimous opinion.  But this is somewhat reminiscent of the debate surrounding Bishop at the tail end of last season.  And now he's sorely missed.  We may well go down - in fact, it's likely.  It's also likely that Leacock will move on to bigger and better things - but I'm guessing it's more than likely that he'll persevere wherever he goes.

I'm going to disagree with everyone who's posted so far (kind of). I've seen half of the games this season (mostly home) and in none of them has Leacock ever been worse than adequate. I agree that based on what we saw last season (and reputation from before) he is probably under performing and that his body languauge etc is not the best but if I had to list Sean Derry's biggest problems none of them would be Dean Leacock! Apart from Orient and the Mickey Mouse game at Oldham we haven't had a tanking this season (in terms of goals conceded) and of the three units in the team (defence, midfield, attack) I reckon defence is the only one to put in a consistently OK performance.

By the way I am not DL's dad/brother/best mate but I really don't think that he's where our problems lie. Lack of creativity, and someone to finish off the all too rare bits of creativity, are why we're down amongst the dead men.

And I thought DL had a pretty good game v Bradford by the way.......!

Deano hasn't played as well as he did last season and I don't think he's the right man to be captain. However I'm happy for him to be in our back four but just wish his body language would improve sometimes so that we can all see 100% commitment!! We are lacking a big centre half and need to bring someone in to command the area. Enoch might be useless sometimes up front but it was good to see him helping out the defense and heading the ball clear on Wednesday.

Fair points and this is exactly what makes a good discussion!

I believe Deano's apart of the contributing factor, if he gave 100% and focused more on his performance, I honestly feel many of our fans would notice the difference. I do think certain places, I.E Facebook and Twitter leave him open to unfair comments and he does seem to be one of them players that no matter what gets bad press from a section of our fans. Personally, I just feel I'd give his place to someone who's going to be more reliable but this isn't going to happen whilst Sheehan is suspended.

I agree with the creativity comment but his markings been poor at times, very poor.

He had a good game, although he was putting on his injury a little to much for me. He could run fine, then all of a sudden he was struggling again and I watched his face for signs of pain and there wasn't any, not even discomfort. The thing about his performance last Saturday was the fact he nearly gave the ball a way numerous times, his passing seemed poor (perhaps related to his injury?) - When he headed the ball, he wouldn't do it a way but into dangerous areas and it was very frustrating. He also went in with a challenge that could have resorted with a penalty decision, the challenge didn't require being made and he gave a corner a way as a result. I just think he's lacking myself, we need the Deano who we should be missing!

I agree 100% with this. It was frustrating to see our only striker doing what Deano or Manny should have been doing, he helped out about 4 times where he made the clearance and he did fantastically well.

So here's a riddle: what player can leap like a salmon and head the ball with the power of a jackhammer in our own penalty area but seems to be unable to leave the floor if within 30 yards of the oppositions goal? I too saw this against Bradford and have no credible explanation for the puzzle that is Enoch!

I agree with @MuddyPatchPie I don't think Deano should be captain but I would keep him. I think is game would improve if we gave the captaincy to someone else. Gary Liddle?

My shout for captain has been Sheehan, but then the turnip goes and lets himself down with a needless early bath.

Posted

Sheehan shouldn't have seen a card for the first yellow, I'll stand by him and defend him! Their player stuck his head into Sheehan's face and tried to swipe at him a couple of times. I believe Sheehan only moved his head, perhaps he puts his hands on him (can't remember now) but if he did it was only to create space between him and the other player, not a push.

He would make an ideal captain, he's passionate and vocal. He's now got a good report with the fans, whilst these are qualities our current captain is squandering.

Deano could be a brilliant captain and someone who pushes our players, I don't mean to sound like I'm picking or hate him. I just think a good captain would make a large difference, as I do a more reliable defender.

Posted

The captain is also the voice of the players, and provides the link up the chain.

Posted

It's a toss up between Sheehan and Liddle as captain. Me personally, from last season & continuing on this season, he has been the most stand out player. Perhaps with him moving to the midfield it could provide the spark we need, with his passion.

On to Dean Leacock; rather disappointed this season, he hasn't taken to being captain very well has he? I would drop the captain from him and give that to one of the above 2.

"Myself and other senior players will tell players if they’re not pulling their weight and I’d expect the same in return" - Dean Leacock

So, he will end up having long conversations with himself? First sign of madness that!. 'Myself and other senior players' - I don't think the problem lies with the in experience and I'm probably reading to much into this but it's a dumb comment.

Why now? All this talk of being together and playing for the manager. He's sacked, a few weeks later the same person tells the media the dressing room was split under CK. I'm really disappointed with Deano, I actually looked up to him and although I was against him leading us as the captain (due to his choice of language) I felt he could be a role model, especially with our fans.

“The enjoyment is also coming back now because the start of the season was tough.”

"I don’t want to get relegated because when I was at Derby and we went down from the Premier League that was not enjoyable and nobody wants it on their CV."

Nobody wants a bad CV, although it's hardly the same in football. Relegation for one team, is another sides gain! Someone will snap him up when he leaves, perhaps not the ideal side for him but he needs to show more desire. Throughout this season he's commented on how things are going to change, saying sorry on Twitter. Start playing Deano, quit moaning and lead the bloody team!
