  1. Top post @menzinho These days I think a radical change of formation is a summer thing or an act of a struggling, desperate team. Our squad has been assembled and prepared for 3-4-2-1 this season. As you said it's served us well since 2021. The variations can come from 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-1-2, the height of the wingbacks and many other subtle moves the coach can make. And there's the thing that always seems to happen on the rare occasions we've played with a back 4 or something different, the players look really unfamiliar with it and the impression given is that they think the formation is being evaluated and not them.
  2. We’ve played with a variation of a 3-5-2 (3-4-2-1) for years now and it’s worked for us so far. Also when you look at the teams that were promoted last season Bradford, Port Vale and Wimbledon all played some variation of a 3-5-2 as well. Every formation has its strengths and weaknesses, I think the 4-4-2 covers the pitch well but you can be overrun in midfield if you face a team that plays with 3 centre mids or a box midfield. With the 3-4-2-1 we are very solid in central areas but it demands a lot of the wing-backs because they almost have to do the job of two players and they sometimes get pinned in if facing a full back and a winger. I’m not overly concerned with the formation, I think it works well for how we want to play, the two attacking midfielders and two central midfielders mean we should be able to get a lot of control in the middle of the pitch and dominate. Sometimes I just wish the wing-backs play a tad higher, they were really deep under Stuart and that seems to have followed on with Martin. Maybe Luke Williams has warped my mind as to how wing-backs should play (because under him they were basically wingers!) I think the approach to how you play is probably more important to us and that is to be brave (not sit too deep) play forward and be relentless with the press to pin-teams in. We’ve done it in phases and stages this season, just in the last two matches the intent and bravery hasn’t quite been there for me but there's no reason to suggest we can't get back into a positive approach.

  5. I certainly would look at different formations in the future. A 4-4-2 would be worth looking at or even a 4-5-1 for away games As I have said in other threads, Notts have never really got to grips with how other teams set up against us. They allow Notts to have the possession & just sit back employing the high press against us & just wait for the Notts mistake when Notts give the ball away, which they always do during most matches. I would prefer a more direct approach & I would also consider Notts playing a counter attacking game, especially when they are playing away. I don't think that Notts should drastically change the formation mid season because the players are used to what they are doing, & I think it would be too disruptive mid season. It could be tweaked a little such as going to a back four occasionally or two up front, but a major change would be better planned at the start of a season.
  6. There’s a saying that what goes round comes round, who’d have thought that Premier League Clubs would be adopting long throw ins but now it’s come back in fashion across the leagues, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see 4-4-2 come back.
  7. There has been a lot said recently regarding the return of set pieces and long throw-ins in the elite levels of football. While possession with a purpose still has a place, is moving the ball forward quicker now the preferred style? In recent seasons, Notts have employed three at the back and two wingbacks and we have enjoyed some success playing that way. In more recent times particularly the wingbacks have been less effective going forward and usually aren’t the best defenders. Would we be benefit from a four four two formation? Going to a back four with two full backs that can defend and still have the option to overload down the flanks when required. The four across the middle could include either one or two who could play as wingers or or attacking midfielders and two up front, one of which could double as a ten. Or could it be it doesn't matter what formation we use, just need good players with the right mentality and the desire to win!
  8. 1971, the year of decimalisation. The year when you could get eleven Loaves of bread for a Pound. This is a very interesting fifteen minute video describing what you could get or how much you could get for a £1 note in 1971. The revelation will shock you, especially the young folks.

I have finally decided to take the plunge and join the site. I have been reading for a long time and I hope that by signing up it will give those who run the site some encouragement to keep going. I am sure it must take a lot of effort to maintain such a good place for fans to talk and follow news updates. I am from Nottingham and have been a Pie since the 1970s. I am a season ticket holder in the KOP. I do not usually post but prefer to read. As I say, I feel there is something different about this community and I look forward to taking part.
  10. Crisp bags, pop cans, chocolate bars.... At what point will they cost £2 each? Inflation does not make sense in some cases.
  11. I have watched a lot of Homes Under the Hammer [don't laugh], and they stress the importance of making sure you check the title. If it's a leasehold, make sure you can extend it, or have enough time to sell it on. I would only look at Freehold properties when I am in a position to buy, I know not everyone can, and that leasing is virtually securing what could be considered a rental for usually your lifetime. Even landlords of rental properties are pulling cons by claiming they are selling their houses in order to vacate legal tenants, and then after a few weeks, they push the property price up.

  19. To put it further into perspective a semi on a road where I lived as a boy was worth £3595 in 1971. Those houses are unaffordable now for people in their 20's just starting out. A similar house was recently sold for £225,000, nearly 63 times the 1971 price.
  20. I think cavemen were highly organised @Chris, they probably had a rota for hunting wooly mammoths and everything. I'm in the UK visiting family and friends for a few days. I'll be missing out on football, but this time there are other priorities. Hopefully I'll finally make it back next time.
  21. @Robbie To put it into perspective my wages around that time were about £20 a week.
  22. She’s a lot better thanks @Chris I’m pleased to see you posting but take it easy and ease yourself back gradually your health is more important. I hope you get to see Notts live soon.
  23. The house was leasehold but I arranged with the seller to buy the freehold at the same time of the purchase Another scandal of recent times, are private roads etc where external mgmt companies can charge over the top annual fees
  24. Thankfully my bungalow is mine the mortgage is all paid off, I do feel sorry for those folk affected by this.
  25. I think Hall and Iorpenda have looked a bit tired in the last couple of games. Probably due to not being used to playing regular men’s football. Martin Paterson seems to like Grant so he might replace Hall. Not sure he will play two up front, so Dennis might miss out. I wouldn’t be against giving Kouhyar a start. I think he’s probably earned it.

  30. Next home game hopefully, it really does feel like I have missed 10 games when it's only a few weeks. I'm taking care of myself, I don't have much choice when my body decides to sleep. I've been told off twice recently by @super_pie for snoring loudly. 😂 I'm glad Mrs T is a lot better. ❤️ Aye, to be fair I fell for the sterotype impression of them. Yet, I feel even worse to think I am not as organised as a caveman might have been. So, thanks @DangerousSausage. 😅 PS. I heard @Hi Humans ツ had a round in the prediction league. 😉 Have a great time catching up with your family, DS.
  31. @TheSkipper The supermarket chain "GEM" no longer exists as an independent entity; its British operations were acquired by Asda in the mid-1960s, and its U.S. and Canadian operations ceased in the late 1970s and 1980s. Asda now occupies the sites of GEMs UK Supermarkets. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09593960500049183#:~:text=Abstract,Nottingham
  32. This is Asda now, right? I have never heard of this supermarket, but the building looks similar to what I recognise as being Asda. Just with some moderisation. How big of a supermarket chain was GEM?
  33. I watched a programme about Anne Frank the other day, it reconstructed what it would have been like at the beginning of the invasion of German troops, going into hiding, and eventually how the Franks were discovered to be hiding. I couldn't imagine fleeing my home, my family and taking a risk to find safety like some of these brave souls.

  37. I haven't been the best health-wise since returning from my family's break. I really had a good time, and I intended to update the community on that. It was good to spend a week with Super and go to various places. It's a bit lacklustre on my part, but I will be upping my game. I really miss having seen Notts; it seems like ages since I last watched them play live. I hope Mrs. T is doing okay, @Fan of Big Tone. The good news, and main point to take away from my comment, is that I do have content being lined up and I am getting help again to come from being disorganised like a caveman to a much easier and manageable workflow. It would be great to see what other PON members are upto, they are what makes this click.
