Notts County’s form in the EFL League Two 2023/24 season has been a bit of a rollercoaster. After a disappointing defeat to Sutton on the opening day, the team seemed to have found their footing with a strong start to the season. However, recent defeats, particularly the home loss to Mansfield, have been a cause for concern.
The team’s performance at Meadow Lane has generally been strong, with the crowd support undoubtedly playing a part. However, the Mansfield game was a disappointment and highlighted some of the issues that Notts County faces away from home.
In terms of goal scoring and conceding stats, it’s clear that the pressure of conceding is impacting our attack. Despite this, Notts County has shown they are capable of scoring when they need to.
The current form of the team heavily relies on players like Jodi Jones, John Bostock, and Macaulay Langstaff. Matt Palmer also deserves a mention, despite some inconsistent performances.
Looking ahead to the upcoming fixtures against Gillingham and Newport, it’s hard to predict how many points we’ll pick up. The pressure of being at the top end of the table may be impacting the team’s performance.
Overall, while there are certainly areas for improvement, it’s important to remember that no team can win every game. The most important thing is that Notts County continues to enjoy their football and plays to the best of their ability.

Yep a very good night for us. Jones sounded like he gave their full back a night to forget, Macca unlucky not to get a hat-trick and chances for Morias too. But most importantly to me we got a clean sheet (maybe aided by the poor performance of Newport) but a good confidence boost for the defence nonetheless. Sets us up nicely for Wrexham.
Joss Labadie
Scot Bennett
Aaron Collins
Thanks for starting this @Piethagoram I’d completely forgot, don’t tell the gaffer he’ll sack me.
I’ll add David Pipe to the list a very popular player for both clubs.
Yeah, tough one this, but I seem to remember John Sheridan had a short spell as manager at Newport.
and the late Jason Turner
It’s the weekend.
What has everyone got planned, are you off to the match, seeing relatives, chilling out, let us know.
Today I won’t be doing much due to this awful weather so expect to see me camped on here. Tonight Mrs. T is doing one of her famous home made curries. “Which curry is she doing Tony” I hear you say. Well she’s cooking a superb Chicken Jalfrezi and I’ve got a nice bottle of Titanic Plum Porter to help wash it down.
Not sure about Saturday and Sunday it depends on the weather I’ll update later.
Whats everyone else doing/done this weekend?
Just back from Gdansk,,, wind felt like -10 in Sopot @Fan of Big Tone
Luton airport arrival hall just chaotic
Up in a few hours for Gillingham away
No Park Run this morning as it was cancelled due to flooding in fact they could probably have staged a Park Swim looking at the pictures I’ve seen, so I had a local walk instead, this afternoon I’ll be listening to the match and hoping for a win.
We got stranded at Boston, if we managed to get all the way - I think we'd have felt lucky and I am surprised the train made it that far. After a short stroll to McDonald's for Super, we hopped into two taxis splitting up into two groups but both taxis were near each other the whole journey into Skegness. It's been really nice, a bit of rain at times but nothing that stops us.
On Sunday we went round Windthorpe which is our old stomping grounds. A lot of fond memories.
Anyone know anything about this?
I haven't heard anything about this and can't find much information online. Maybe a youngster?
3 hours ago, DangerousSausage said:I haven't heard anything about this and can't find much information online. Maybe a youngster?
yes one for the future maybe.
Yes, people on Twitter thought it were a first team signing despite the transfer window being shut - clearly making it one for the B team. He sounds promising but I hold very limited hopes based on how much we give youngsters a shot to establish themselves.
How many on here are old enough to remember when we used to call Notts "the Maggies"? People used to say "are you going down to see the Maggies tonight?", I wonder when it changed to "The Pies", I can't remember suddenly one day starting saying "Come on you Pies", it must have been a gradual thing I suppose. I don't think we said "Come on you Maggies", it was more "Up the Maggies" and before that "Up the Magpies". I suppose "Come on You Maggies" or "Come on you Magpies" is a bit long winded hence shortened to Pies.
A common chant in the days of wooden rattles was 2-4-6-8 who do we appreciate C_O_U_N_T_Y, COUNTY!
Anyone else remember those days?
It tends to follow other clubs, it's like this 'All Notts Aren't We'. A lot of our chants come from other clubs, but that's football in general. My grandfather used various terms to talk about Notts, but he did call us Maggies.
It's been "pies" since I've been going @Fan of Big Tone. I always thought it was just convenient, as the "come on you xxx" chant only works with one syllable. I looked up the origin of the word and it's an interesting rabbit hole.
Apparently the word "pie" has been used for the black and white birds since medieval times and predates "magpie" by several centuries (the "mag" prefix is said to come from Margaret - "maggie pie"). The baked product might be named after it too, as magpies pick up lots of random objects, and baked pies contain lots of random things. So "pie" is actually an earlier form of the word "magpie". There you go, impress/bore your friends at the pub with that one

Thanks @DangerousSausage that’s really interesting, it’s strange how these words come about.

Brilliant win, and a great way to bounce back. Gillingham did have some dangerous moments on the break (and we rode our luck a couple of times), but they really didn't look special and we deserved our win. Just 23 more points and we're staying up!
Kudos to every Notts fan who braved the weather in that open away end.
Sorry about the rude interruption - where were we? Rounds 12 and 13 are postponed for reasons we're all aware of - I'll try to squeeze them in later in the season. We'll pick up with round 14, with these matches kicking off at 3pm on Saturday. Good luck and remember your jokers!

it looks like the cap has been well worn and must have been a favourite, as you need to live and die in them for caps to really start to fall a part. at least you will be sorted when you get the one @Chris is giving you. its worth noting, this must have been purchased whilst he was doing the raffles online and so, i think this hat will be validated as lucky. it would have seen notts make the playoffs successfully and promoted before its even been worn!
now that sounds like something special.
@liampie yes the hat was definitely well worn by me, it looked new when I bought it although it was in a charity shop. I’d have been interested to hear about its history I don’t think “magpie” referred to a football team it must have been something else, anyway it’s in the bin now and resigned to history.
Good job on finding a replacement for your lucky hat. It’s unfortunate that it will likely be discarded, but the memories of wearing it will always remain.
It looks great and I can't wait to see it in person, the artwork is way better than how most murals end up in my opinion although I believe Luke Williams has earned his spot on there by now????.
It appears fantastic, and if it was painted without stencils, it deserves even more praise. It will be a pleasure to see it as I pass by. I’m not a fan of the colour the Navi painted itself as it’s quite jarring, but this helps.
The mural looks fantastic, it’s a very suitable tribute to the football legends of Nottingham.
Sir Bobby Charlton: England World Cup winner and Manchester United legend dies https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/62989801
This is awful news, which I am told @super_ram said to my yesterday but I didn't register it then. Very saddening to think only one player from England's winning World Cup team remains. ????
Rest in Peace, Sir Bobby Charlton.
For those interested England are playing Italy tonight in a qualification game for Euros, kick off 7.45pm, it’s on Channel 4 coverage starts at 7pm.
1 hour ago, The Heff said:For England, the match was rather routine, and I must acknowledge that their performance was commendable. However, I do agree that Italy appeared to be a disappointing representation of a footballing nation that once held great stature in the sport.
They did give us a bit of a scare by scoring first against the run of play but that seemed to fire England into playing more positively and directly, especially in the second half.
Italy has some outstanding players, but they’re not spread across the field and are now quite average as a nation. They’ve relied on their older and ageing players for too long, and now they’re paying the price. England looked impressive, but we usually do when it comes to qualifying.
Italy seems to be struggling to find their feet at the moment, but they have a knack for pulling through when the stakes are high. They tend to step up their game during major tournaments. England did well against an underperforming Italy, with well-executed goals and some players really seizing their opportunity to shine, proving Gareth Southgate right for selecting them.
Notts have drawn Crawley at home in the first round of the FA Cup, I think we could have had easier draws but at least we are at home, what do others think?
Yep, home draw is always a bonus. I a way I'm glad it's not a team like Kettering or Tamworth, your proper non-league lower than even National League level. Still have horrible memories of losing to Hornchurch and Salford.
I am happier knowing that the match is at home. I can't complain about the draw. It is what it is and Crawley will be a tough opponent for Notts at Meadow Lane in the first round of the FA Cup.
The draw isn’t bad, though I might have fancied a different team. But we’ve got Crawley, and that’s that. It’s going to be a hard match; we know Crawley can put up a fight. Playing at home doesn’t make it any easier, but it’s a welcome change. No complaints here, I’m eager for the match.
Well it seems like ages since we’ve been able to log in to our favourite football forum, I have really missed coming on here and reading everyone’s views, although I have been chatting with my old sparring partner @super_ram which has kept me sane.
A massive thank you to @Chris and his helpers for all the hard work getting us back online.
Now let’s get PoN back up and running, what have you all been doing this past week or so?
It wouldn’t take long for everyone on PON to regroup, it’s the kind of site that deserves the time we all invest and it’s nice to see everyone back. Now that we have had some time off, we can proceed with discussions because that time did make me miss the site.
Welcome back, everyone! As mentioned, we’re back to normal service and there’s so much to do! Our team is buzzing with excitement and can’t wait to see everyone having a blast and engaging with the content. Keep the momentum going! It’s absolutely fantastic to be back!
It’s great to be back on PON, reading and commenting. It’s a fantastic site.
It's not without saying that I care passionately about the Pride of Nottingham and Notts County.
Our recent downtime had been caused by a cyberattack, where hacker(s) caused significant damage to our site. This attack is unjustified and the people responsible cannot validate their actions. Football is about unity, whilst rivalry is a natural part of the game. To resort to this type of behaviour is very cowardly and in the long run what did it achieve? No amount of excuses can humanly explain this behaviour.
At this stage, I can't go into the full details, but there will be a point where I will provide a further update.
I fully believe in transparency and accountability, I hold my hands up and say that I should have done better, and I can honestly say I will learn from this in the future. I will ensure that the best practices are used to avoid such a pathetic attack. I can say, without a doubt, that only damage was conflicted. No data was accessed. Passwords are encrypted within the database and nothing was retrieved.
I have made sure to check this, along with a friend who is a very knowledgable person within this field.
We could have been back somewhat sooner, although I did take the time to move hosts. You should notice the benefit of us running a dedicated server, with a lot more resources behind us. I wanted to ensure that we thoroughly inspected every area of the site, considering the extensive number of files. It is important to dedicate sufficient time to this task. The worst scenario would be to neglect corners and wish for the best.
Further security is being used and whilst I politely ask that we focus on the positives, not the issue I outlined in the start.
I do share your frustration about the downtime. I sincerely hope if you read this you will get behind the Pride of Nottingham, and we can firmly pick up from where we were previously. COYP!
All the best.
Chris

Only between me and @super_ram about who will be higher in the prediction league and Guess Who competitions.
We mustn’t forget the maintenance aspect of the downtime. A tremendous amount of effort has been put into restoring the site and tidying up. The contributions of Richard and Terabyte have been phenomenal, making a significant difference. The decision to transition to a new dedicated server is a sensible move for a site that’s looking to progress. Sprucing things up over the next few months will have a substantial impact. I’m thrilled that our regular members and community are rallying behind the site.
I’m pleased everything is back to normal, thanks to everyone who helped restore the site to its prime. Let’s keep moving forward!
I highly doubt MK Dons will easily dominate this league. Many teams go through rough patches and difficulties in their inaugural season. Personally, I believe this is a questionable choice, but they have managed to secure Gateshead's manager.
I have reservations about the decision in the long run. While they have selected a capable manager, if they are unwilling to grant them sufficient time to make improvements, they will only find themselves stuck in a cycle of repeating this process. It becomes challenging to make progress under such circumstances. It's understandable that MK Dons fans desired Alexander's departure, but it is crucial for them to wholeheartedly support the new appointment without reservation.
Considering their drop from League One, it seems Graham Alexander should have been granted more time. He’ll soon join a new club, as I’ve noticed MK Don’s have quickly found his replacement. Their dismal performance works in our favour. It might take them a while to recover.

i am with @Chris, hes spot on with what he said.
we just lack the fight and strengthen we usually have in midfield. defensively we made it harder on ourselves, but i thought connell rawlinson was the best defender on the pitch. richard brindley had a nightmare unfortunately. there was nothing that macaulay langstaff or david mcgoldrick could do, its just was out of their hand but they at least gave their all.
We played well at first especially with that early lead but we didn't manage to hold it and quickly fell apart in the second half, we definitely missed Jodi Jones but I think our defence wasn't our biggest issue as Baldwin and Rawlinson where making some good challenges, I feel like our big issue was how easy we were giving the ball away in the midfield allowing them to attack more often than we should of let them. The corners where obviously a big issue too but I feel that came down to confidence after throwing away the other goals.
I genuinely believe that we possess all the necessary elements to achieve a positive outcome, and I have full confidence that Luke Williams will give his utmost effort. The real question lies in how Gillingham will approach the game. Both teams have the ability to score goals, but we are fortunate to have a formidable squad that, in theory, should excel. Let's hope they take the field with a burning desire to showcase our team's true potential.
i think he should do well for forest green rovers, hopefully he can spend a few seasons with them.
Good luck to him, some fans wanted him to return here, but I honestly think it would take the right League Two team to get the best out of him. I am wishing him success at Forest Green, just not against us.
Good luck to him, forest green have been one of the best teams we have played so far this season in my opinion with their biggest issue being the amount of goals they let in so he might be able to help them gain some more points.
Next up Notts travel to Gillingham. How many links between the two clubs can we find, players, coaches, managers, tea ladies etc. ????
Heres one to start Vadain Oliver joined Notts on loan in 2016 and scored one goal in 18 matches he later ended up at Gillingham in 2020.
Join in and find a link.
Most obscure? Duncan Jupp???
I want to throw another defender into the mix, that is Alex Lacey.
The awful player that was Tom Williams is a MAGnet. ????

You're getting about quite a bit, @Piethagoram. Good for you!
I will be interested to see where you end up next. I can say I wasn't expecting you to be in Poland! There are some nice places I have seen from YouTubers of their and Croatia. I watch a person who has been to all the former Russian states.
is there anywhere you still want to visit @Piethagoram? i noticed you have been all over the world and i think that is inspiring. i have only been to a select few places, mostly where family are all located but i would like to travel more eventually.
the pictures you have taken of poland look very nice, it seems quite a relaxed place.
He should have stuck with Gateshead, with how MK Dons fans are right now they won't give him long to turn things around and the club needs a few signings to really give them the strength overall needed to push on. They've got a talented squad, but defensively and in midfield they could be a lot better.
Good luck to him.
i dont blame him because its a good step up, but it does feel like ian burchnall and the forest green rovers move. only difference is, mk dons should be able to turn it around if their fans give him the chance. it might not be this season, but if they allow him to build, he has shown he can get good football and decent results.
i wish gateshead all the best with replacing him too, i like them, i have a soft spot for the club.

At the start of the season I was quietly confident we’d have a good season, I didn’t think we’d start as well as we have done though.
A lot of opinions have been voiced about our defence, there’s definitely room for improvement but I still think a lot of that comes down to how we set out to play. I think regardless of individuals we will always look a bit susceptible at the back because we load our team with attacking players and push everyone forward leaving space in behind. This season the quality of opposition has also improved, our defenders have pretty much stayed the same. It was always going to be more challenging.
But right now our attacking prowess, one of the reasons we are very enjoyable to watch, is seeing us through. If you look at the stats we are actually very efficient in attack; given the high number of goals we’ve scored we haven’t actually had that many shots. I think in only a few games this season we’ve had more shots than the opposition; those were Grimsby, Tranmere Salford & Colchester (we lost that one!) – I know stats can tell their own stories, dangerous shots would be more interesting and better stat (but I’m not going to re-watch every game to compile that). Quite a few teams we’ve played have been happy to shoot from distance but we don’t tend to just hit and hope, be it in crossing and shooting, we’re much more likely to be patient to try and create a genuinely good goals scoring chance.
I agree with Luke Williams that we haven’t hit our peak performance yet, probably Salford away and Swindon at home were stand-outs, overall I’m very pleased with our form!
I had us down as starting the season slowly and finishing outside the playoffs by the end of the season, so I’m delighted with the way we have started. One thing that worried me all summer was the fragility of the defence and that has proved to be correct, but I hope and expect Notts to start addressing this in January. Whether or not we do enough to go up isn’t an issue for me because I can see us being even stronger next season and I would rather see us get out of this division stronger and only need to change 3 or 4 players, rather than need 7 or 8 as that has been a recipe for disaster in the past.
We will get better, just need to keep picking up as many points as we can before the transfer window opens. LW has been spot on by giving the players who got us promoted a chance to prove themselves, and half a season is more than long enough for them to do so.
