Mixed Feelings for Notts County Manager Luke Williams After Pre-Season Friendly

PON_News

Luke Williams, the manager of Notts County, shared his thoughts after his team played their last pre-season friendly at Shrewsbury Town in a 1-1 draw.

Williams described the game as mixed, with both good and bad moments. He mentioned that the team struggled to get to grips with the pitch, which was dry and had long grass.

This made it difficult for them to build up their play. “It was a mixed game,” Williams said. “We struggled to get to grips with the pitch, which was dry and had long grass. This is normal because it’s more sensible to protect the pitch for the long season. But it was a slow pitch, which made it difficult to build up.”

Despite these challenges, Williams was happy that his team managed to control periods of the game. However, he acknowledged that they were not at the level they needed to be yet. He stated that they cannot expect to play like that and make that many mistakes in the build-up and still be a league two team.

With the amount of possession that they had, they needed more good chances. “I’m happy that we managed to control periods of the game,” Williams said. “But we’re certainly not at that level yet. We cannot expect to play like that and make that many mistakes in the build-up and be a league two team.”

Williams also praised David McGoldrick, describing him as an outstanding player who is exciting to watch. He mentioned how McGoldrick runs around so much for the team and works so hard, putting his body on the line. Williams expressed his gratitude for having such a player on his team.

“David McGoldrick is an outstanding player and so exciting to watch,” Williams said. “He runs around so much for the team and works so hard, putting his body on the line. When you have that combination, you have to be so grateful for that today.”

Williams seemed content with his team’s performance but acknowledged that there is still room for improvement. He mentioned that they have one more week of conditioning in a more natural way as they gear up towards a league game. He expressed confidence in his team’s ability to represent themselves and the club well in League two.

In discussing his team’s preparation for the upcoming season in League two, Williams emphasised the importance of hard work and continuous improvement. He stressed the need for his players to remain focused and disciplined both on and off the field

“Now we’ve finished our match preparations, our preseason friendly preparation,” Williams said. “We have one more week of conditioning in a more natural way that we were gearing up towards a league game. So we’re OK, we’re happy enough.”

its a very fair from luke williams, i do think that the players will be fine in the season. i am confident that the team and coaching staff can improve on the defensive mistakes. we have a squad filled with good quality at this level and i think its a case of if someone slips up, two others can make up for it. i thought the game was okay, notts had chances to win too.

Despite the fact that our team seemed to have some trouble fully comprehending the game, there were undoubtedly some moments where we shone. It is our hope that by reflecting on our mistakes and working to improve upon them, we will emerge as a stronger and more cohesive unit when the league begins.

The pitch conditions seemed to have caused some challenges for the team, but it's essential to remember that every new season brings different obstacles. I'm feeling quite positive for the coming season. Onwards and upwards, COYP!

It’s encouraging to see Williams show confidence in his team, and his mixed feelings are completely understandable. Pre-season games are hardly an accurate measure of future performance, but they can highlight areas that need improvement. Looking forward to watching this team grow throughout the season.

Pre-season friendlies can be like this, I am not too worried. It’s all about experimenting and mistakes will happen. I agree that these are things that improve during the season. It’s just important that Luke Williams sees it, as he can coach it out and improve the performance with his clear instructions. We have a strong midfield, so once the squad settles, I am sure the defence will do well, with whoever starts up top having the ability to net goals.

Early days yet for us yet. No need for worry, it's only a pre-season game. Notts will do well when it matters.

Despite the inconsistent performance in this pre-season friendly, I think it's clear that we can't pass any final judgement on the squad quite yet. Pre-season is always a time of trial and error, and fine tuning is critical during these stages. Let's not forget about the pitch conditions, it unfortunately worked against our usual build-up style. The takeaways for me are that the team showed they can control periods of game and that we've got an impressive player in David McGoldrick.

Williams' mixed feelings resonate with a significant number of us fans. It's clear that improvement is necessary, especially when considering that they need to assert themselves in the league season, but we need to remain patient. It's important to allow time for Williams and the team to adjust, find their feet and improve collectively. Pre-season games are meant to be platforms to build up the team's confidence and iron out any flaws, not just to win.

Luke Williams is right in saying our team isn't at a top-tier level yet. However, I have faith that we have the capability and the grit to improve and ascend to levels we're aiming for. The season will truly be the test.

Luke Williams is quite careful, I think he’s also trying to balance our expectations. The team will have a lot of pressure on them to go forward and produce another good season. The squad has the depth and quality, it’s all about timing and taking our chances from here. 10 games in, we’ll be able to see how things are going properly. I think Notts will do well, even if we start off slowly.

Precisely, pre-season friendlies are like this and we must be able to perform on any pitch type. Clubs will know that we prefer a certain surface condition so that we can pass the ball around, and if we complain about it, it will only lead to teams leaving their pitch dry or overwatering it. We need to be better than that, and I believe that in time, we will be. I have no concerns, and hopefully, Luke Williams feels the same way.

It’s normal to have some questions and doubts going into the season. These are just normal pre-season jitters.

As for the friendlies, they’re a run out and competitively different from matches where points matter.

The squad is very settled right now. We managed to retain most of the players and added depth in the areas required. So, with the new faces, we are going to need to adapt a little, and pre-season was all about that. Replacing Ruben Rodrigues isn’t easy; it’s one of those areas where we need to dig deeper, but David McGoldrick has done superbly since signing, and his goal against Alfreton has sparked him to take more chances. I understand the mixed feelings, but I don’t think there are any major concerns.

David McGoldrick has been class since he returned. He’s shown that he’s here to help the team and to work his socks off. He puts every effort he can into games, and he’s reaping the rewards now. Not just from the praise of us fans and Luke Williams, but also by finding the net. He looks like a constant threat and fits in very well with the team.

Pre-season is never straightforward, nor is the league, but we all know that once the squad settles into a routine and the season begins, it’s all about form more than performances. Those will improve with every game, as Williams can tinker with tactics and give further instructions to the players. It’s that advice which is invaluable to us moving forward.
