Stuart Maynard Optimistic About Notts County’s Strength Ahead of Accrington Stanley Clash

PON_News

As Notts County prepare to face Accrington Stanley at Meadow Lane today, head coach Stuart Maynard is filled with optimism. Speaking ahead of the game, Maynard reflected on his squad's performance, the close of the transfer window, and his team's unbeaten start to the League Two season.

After a 2-1 away victory over Swindon Town at the County Ground, Maynard's side find themselves in 7th place on the League Two table. He believes that his squad is well-positioned to build on their solid start, now having secured back-to-back wins, including an emphatic 4-1 home victory against Grimsby Town.

“We've got a squad now that can combat the opposition, as you're seeing from the start of the season,” Maynard said. “We’ve really good options within the squad, and as you've seen in games, when we've made substitutions, we’ve not got weaker, at times we've got stronger. That’s what we needed—people coming off the bench and having an impact.”

Maynard praised the club’s ability to retain key players amid interest from other teams during the transfer window, citing it as a critical factor in their ambitions for the season. He commended the club’s recruitment strategy, which has seen players stay despite tempting offers. "Keeping players in-house, that continuity, is sometimes the best business you can do," he emphasised. "It shows the ambition of the football club."

In terms of new arrivals, Maynard was also enthusiastic about the recent acquisition of George Abbott, a young player on loan from Tottenham Hotspur. Abbott, who has been playing with Spurs' U21s, is expected to adapt quickly to the demands of League Two. “He’s got real good enthusiasm and athleticism,” Maynard said. “He’s been around Spurs’ first team for a long time now. We believe he’s a real prospect for Tottenham, and we’re really excited to be working with him.”

The head coach also addressed the challenges of bringing in young players from higher divisions, noting the importance of fitting them into Notts County’s playing style. “We believe that we fit these players into a system and a style of play that suits their game, so they get the opportunity to come and really excel in it,” he explained, adding that Abbott's physicality would help him adjust to the rigours of League Two football.

One of the more controversial signings Notts County made was Jevani Brown, whose off-the-field issues had raised concerns among fans. Brown was involved in an incident 18 months ago for which he was fined, but Maynard was confident in the club’s decision. “We know it’s an emotive issue, and it’s a behaviour the club does not condone,” Maynard said. “We’ve got several character references on Jevani before signing him. We believe it was a one-off incident and out of character based on the research we’ve done.”

On the pitch, Maynard believes Brown will add another dimension to their attack. “He’s got the ability to open the door, especially in home games when teams sit back. We need players who can create chances when teams get 10 men behind the ball. He’s someone who can score goals and set them up,” the coach stated.

Reflecting on Notts County’s unbeaten start to the season, Maynard attributed the success to team cohesion and character. “Winning and being unbeaten breeds confidence,” he remarked. “We’ve come from behind in two games, drawn one, and won one. We’ve shown real character and that determination to keep the ball out of the net. Everyone’s in it together, and that’s why we’re having success.”

Looking ahead to the clash against Accrington Stanley, Maynard was cautious despite his side’s favourable position. “Accrington are in a false position. They’re a good team, competitive, with quality in the top end of the pitch that can hurt you. We’ve got to make sure we don’t take them lightly.”

As Notts County aim to continue their strong form, Maynard’s belief in his squad’s depth, discipline, and unity is clear. The coming weeks will prove whether this unbeaten run can translate into a sustained push for promotion, but for now, Maynard and his team remain focused on the task at hand.

With the transfer window behind them, the squad strengthened, and a firm foundation in place, Notts County are set for an exciting campaign.

Love Maynard’s confidence. Accrington might be a tough match, but I trust our squad to get the job done!

Sounds like George Abbott has a lot of potential. I hope he settles in quickly and contributes to our success.

Stuart Maynard seems to have built a solid squad with a mix of experienced players and promising new signings. It’s great to see that the club resisted offers for some of our key players, showing real ambition for the season. His comments about team unity and character are spot on. those elements are so important in football, especially when you’re fighting for promotion. I’m looking forward to seeing how Abbott and Brown fit in, especially if they can help us break down stubborn defences.

Maynard’s comments about Accrington being in a false position are spot on. Just because they’ve had a slow start doesn’t mean they won’t put up a fight. It’s easy to underestimate teams like that, but I’m glad Maynard and the squad aren’t taking them lightly. It’s going to be a tough game, but with our unbeaten run and the way we’ve been playing, I’m confident we can come away with the win. The team seems really united, and with the quality we’ve got, especially with the new signings, we should be aiming high this season. Let’s keep this run going.

I'm not worried about Jevani Brown. He's on loan, and if he's not good or causes problems, we can send him back to Bristol Rovers. I'm more impressed with George Abbott. He seems like a talented young player. He's quiet and reserved. It was nice to see him celebrate with the fans after the Swindon win. As for Maynard, if his team keeps winning games, he'll win over more fans.

The recruitment at Notts has been the best in years under the Reedtz era. We need to trust the board and Stuart Maynard to bring in the right players. Even though we might not have had the busiest transfer windows, we've filled important areas like up front.

Rallying what you have can be good for a close-knit squad looking for promotion. Maynard has thrived with better options on the bench and a stronger starting lineup. This must make his job much easier, so I see no faults.

Stuart has the type of players now in place that he wanted. He, his coaching team & the recruiters have worked together well to build virtually a new team to challenge this season.

But it wasn't just the better calibre of player Stuart wanted, he wanted a much stronger squad too.

It's good that Stuart has a selection headache when choosing his starting 11. Healthy competition for places is a good thing

Accrington will be another stern test for Notts this afternoon, & like every side in this division, will pose a threat.

Notts have shown that they have the flair to open defences, but at the same time have grit, character & determination to defend when they need to.

If Notts show those traits today, they should be too strong for Accrington. I'm hoping for a clean sheet & a 2:0 win.

Maynard is confident and rightly so but he also understands the need to not slip into complacency, as long as he installs that into the team we should be ok.

I think we’ve got a really strong squad now with competition in all areas, which is really good and hopefully means we’ll have a successful season.

Err, we’re playing Accrington @Robbie :joker: I know you know that, an easy slip up to make. 👍

i think its great to hear fans chanting about the team being maynard, the pressure last season was not needed and it just made things harder. hes doing well, which goes to show what the board and the reedtz see in him as the head coach. i think the squad is more his now, where some of the players dropped their heads after luke williams departed. i think its why we allowed the likes of john bostock to go. the players that have come in are maynards and its great to see his confidence coming out.

I think right now, things show that we as fans need to trust the process and have more faith in standing by our owners decisions. There are more people who wanted Stuart Maynard gone. Stability in football is one of the most important factors in success, so now that the squad is more Maynard's team, I do think the signs are encouraging. If a struggling manager/head coach can show signs of improvement, I honestly believe support should be given. This is why I believe that Maynard is thriving now, the board has helped give him a more completed squad and his efforts are paying off. I am very pleased, it's a long season, but it's encouraging. We need our supporters to show more faith at times!
