Valentine's Day

So I went to the local retail park the other day and I noticed they already have Valentine's Day tat on sale.

Here is my candid view on Valentine's Day:

It's just yet another pathetic little excuse for a social festival whereby peer pressure and constant pushing of goods, services and general propaganda mean it's unavoidable. Now, I have a missus, I love her to bits, but one thing she always does is compare our relationship to all of her friends. So, leading up to Valentine's Day, she's going to be exposed to photos and messages from her friends detailing how their boyfriend or current guy-she's-seeing has gone full hog to do something super fancy and romantic... and whatever I do will pale in comparison to some guy who's probably been with their girl for just a few months and fancies going all out to impress her. I could take her to Paris for a weekend and it'll still be a failure because some other lothario has taken his girl to Paris for 5 days and to a fancier hotel.

I like to show my Mrs love all year round by buying thoughtful things every now and then and treating her to things rather than have to comply to a little window whereby society says "you must show love starting...NOW!"

I will of course take her out somewhere on the day (possibly Annie's Burger Shack) and I've bought her a quirky little gift, I'll get her the obligatory bunch of decapitated flowers as well closer to the day - because nothing says "I Love You" like some dying colourful plants - but I just think it's a load of carp to be honest. Clearly the economy needs a bit of a boost around February, what with January being so miserable as a month, hence the whole razzmatazz relating to Valentine's Day.

Oh, and of course, if you're a single person, then Valentine's Day is just as bad, because you're constantly exposed to a giant nation-wide show-off display of LUUURRRVEEEEE. All the worse now that social media's essentially ensured that, come February 14th, my Facebook feed is just going to be post after post of sickly displays of love carried out by couples that most likely show each other no love throughout the rest of the year. Pass me the bucket.

Soooo... there's my two cents.

What are YOUR views on Valentine's Day, folks?

Much love :P

Never been into it, it's American and silly in my opinion.

Some might find this amusing after I said I like Halloween but that's due to having children. I think Valentine's day is bad because it ruins relationships or should this be because some get ideas above their station? It's really a ransom by businesses which seek to profit all year round.

My parents aren't into this (thank god) so it's where I get it from I suppose.

Cheeky~K8 knows I love her and although going for a meal the odd time would be nice, apart from that it's silly. You want to see her views! She doesn't like flowers, rings etc

Haha

Oh god, no...

I cannot say I have forgotten now  :shifty:  I guess I best get on the phone and book somewhere to have a meal, only 31 days to go everyone!

Valentines day is a load of rubbish to me, its just shops trying to make money of people. It does seem to be mainly women who are more interested in it. Obviously not all women... as i certainly would prefer to get nothing and just have a normal day. What others have and want is none of my business so if someones brought something nice or gone out for a meal for valentines day then thats upto them, but in my opinion its not worth bothering with.

We used to give each other cards and presents when we were younger but after  nearly 40 years of marriage it tends to slacken off a little (along with other things)

I do agree it has gone REALLY commercialised these days and people seem to go for more and more extravagant things to celebrate, in our day it was a card and maybe a bunch of flowers, we couldn't afford to jet off to Paris or anything like that.

We won't buy cards but I might find an old one in the loft that she has kept and give it her, (we do that for birthdays too), we may possible celebrate with a steak and bottle of wine at home or something this year but certainly wouldn't go out for a meal, the prices go sky high and every restaurant is packed with starry eyed lovers. Everyday is like Valentines Day for Mrs. H, I'm always telling her I love her and I mean it.

If I gave Granny a card she'd wonder what I was covering up.There's 365 days in a year-they're all special!

I have booked the night off work, ha ha and before you lot get thinking I am going soft. It is just so Mrs PTID can wait on me hand and foot for the full 24 hours. Such a special day and all, I wouldn't want to miss out.

Hopefully we are going down south to Brum that weekend, so I get double bonus, Mrs spends time drinking wine with an ex work colleague and I get peace and quiet.

Long live valentines day

The problem with me (well the wife) is like others have said...the comparison that the wife does. So and so is taking his wife to so and so...

Plus the fact that it is her birthday a few days before so itd a double wammy!
