Comparison of League 2 Clubs Wage Bills

According to Capology,Β the Magpies only have the 12th-highest payroll in League Two, with a weekly wage bill of Β£71,350 & an annual wage bill of Β£3,710,000, although it should be stressed that those figures are an estimate.

Surprisingly, Carlisle are on top

@super_ram

This is the wage bill list for the Championship. Derby are down in 18th place.Β

Noticed the three bottom clubs regarding wage expenditure are also the three at the bottom of the leagueΒ

@Robbie, the Rams are still recovering from the EFL transfer embargo and wage restrictions imposed by The EFLΒ  after points deductions and going into administration. Some restriction weren't lifted until August last year ,which didn't help much with recruiting at the beginning of this season. Squad sizeΒ  and wages offered has limits applied.I think Paul Warne ,and before that,Liam Rosenior did a fantastic working with both hands tied as it were.New owner David Clowes has made no secret about the fact he is looking for additional investment but insists the future of my club has to be sustainable. The days of silly money spending under Mel Morris are gone ,similar to Notts and Mr Hardy.

@RobbieΒ "surprisingly Carlisle are top"...No, not really, they would have the financial legacy from being in EFL1 the previous season

No surprises that Franchise FC take second and Accrington are bottom.

It just goes to show how important it is to spend and invest wisely in your squad. I'm not surprised, as Notts have only been back in the EFL for one full season so far, and it takes time to catch up. This highlights the importance of higher gates at Meadow Lane and commercial efforts around the club, like early season ticket adoption, The Nest, and other revenue streams.

Carlisle are owned by a very wealthy American family too they have assembled (badly) a massive squad.

Salford having the 23rd worst attendance with an average of 2,800 fans each match but the 4th biggest payroll means it’s a very expensive vanity project for the Class of 92! I'm probably bitter after the two losses against them but I really don't want them to finish in the play-offs!

If anything, that table shows spending big isn’t really working, only Bradford are really bucking that trend. The rest of the top 7 all have a lower-table budget.

I'm not sure where these figures are from, but they seem a bit on the high side. The season we were relegated to the Bananarama Premier, we were League Two's top spenders on 3 million for the year while two or three clubs didn't evenmake seven figures. In League One a few years before, about 2.5 million was enough to place us in mid table in terms of budget.

I find it hard to believe wages have grown that much, unless these are for overall club expenditure and not just playing staff?

I don't find it surprising that we're not near the top though. Most of the teams are about where I expected, with the exception of Colchester.Β

It would be interesting to be able to compare clubs finances more equally, as this doesn't really factor in if owners/clubs are overspending or are making smart decisions not to overspend on the payroll. I also assume this only takes into consideration the players wages rather than staff.

What is interesting is seeing how much each team is spending on the player positions. Notts seem to have focused on attack and midfield, with the defence not all that far behind. If I could access the previous seasons, it would probably paint a picture of why we weren't as strong defensively as we are now. As for Notts being placed where they are, I don't think it means much in the grand scheme of things.

It does highlight and reflect well on our recruitment because on paper I believe we do have a squad very capable of winning promotion.

Also, some teams have purchased players and thrown wages on them in a bid to succeed. It really goes to show just how important the right balance is, having a squad that's together and a club focus on moving forward. We are making good progress; we need to remember this.

you might say that we have overachieved the past two seasons, not being in a relegation battle but tipped for promotion is so much better. i think we spend our resources wisely and that shows when we have spells at the very top. i find it very hard to be dishearten by everything, especially those who want stuart maynard out. i just dont see the point of being so anti maynard when he has done a lot better than luke williams.

i dont think williams would have wanted defenders this past summer, i think he would have wanted to focus on being top heavy in the attacking department.

having the 12th highest budget, and finishing 6th looks a lot healthier.
