Festive Cheer

Wigan players are helping out their supporters with some Christmas Cheer, as they are going to pay half of the match ticket for the first 500 fans to buy them.

The away game at Leeds is likely to cost £36.00 each and coming on Boxing day is considered to be a bit too steep...

that is awesome, it will help the club because the support will be much higher i guess and it does give that festive feeling. nice idea by them!

It's a shame that this is abnormal in the modern game.

A massive well done to them

Reminds me of what Ray Trew did a few seasons back for us.

Not only that time but also when him and @erindoors paid for the fans drinks.

This is good, why other clubs don't try and do similar is beyond me.

I've always felt companies (including football teams) should look after their customers and this is a nice Christmas tale. Great share!

A wonderful gesture by the Wigan players

Like @Northants Pie Said.

It's a big shame it's not being done on a regular basis.

I get a funny feeling that something is happening within the fans of England (I'm looking in from the outside) and it's only a matter of time before it's too expensive to go to games. and then who knows what will happen

What will happen is that the FA will blame everyone bar themselves as it's there fault for the non-regulation of football that has happened over the last 25 years whilst lining the own pockets, of course allegedly (as we can't be seen to be writing the truth)

I'll give you my example of cost for me & my little lad to go to a Notts game at Meadow Lane

£30 in tickets, £20 travel, £15 food, drink & programme, that's £65 before contemplating any purchase from the club shop. Way too expensive

It is expensive to watch football these days I keep the costs to a minimum. I buy a season ticket which although is a costly initial outlay does save quite a bit in the long run. I eat before I go to the match so don't need to buy food, I don't feel the need to consume any alcohol before the match and a programme is free for bench members. I don't buy stuff from the shop either. So the only cost to me is the petrol to get to the match.

If I was travelling further (say Northampton) I'd take my own food and a flask for refreshments at half time.

@tonyhateley not saying it's the case at the moment because I haven't tried to do this for a while, but there was a time when I was stopped from taking my little unbreakable flask into ML. Not sure if that was just the county road side either?

Apparently they can be used as projectiles you know...

I take my flask full of bovril every week. It's in the bag with the crisps and drinks for the kids.

Agreed with the price of food and drink at the match. I try to take all I'll need for the kids with me or it ends up.costing an arm and a leg.

@hissingdwarf I am talking about a few years ago, also you had to have the tops removed from plastic bottles as they too could be used as a projectile

I think there was a brief period a few years ago where they were stopping people taking flasks into the stadium but it caused that much of an uproar that they quickly back tracked.

Like TH says they backtracked very quickly on most things like that.

Rules like that do annoy me. I was at the Dublin o2 last year and purchased a bottle of pepsi not 10 foot from the gates to que up with the security guards on it. When I moved forwards the said 10 feet I was informed that I couldn't take it in, even though they had seen me purchase it. You can only have their bottles at 4 times the price.

I was not impressed to say the least.

@hissingdwarf sounds just like the Olympic games, where you had to purchase inside from a well known American drinks manufacturer as they were sponsors, heaven forbid you actually wanted to save a little and take your own

English football isn't fan-friendly any more. Of course there is the ridiculous costs of tickets, the fact that many new stadia are out of town and can only be accessed by car, and then there are the stupid little rules like not being able to drink alcohol in view of the pitch and stewards costantly telling you to sit down. For heaven's sake, football is supposed to be FUN.

Going back to the topic a bit, my local team had their last fixture before the winter break postponed just an hour before kick-off. Many fans had travelled on a special train put on for the match and were already in Kaiserslautern. When they arrived back in Mannheim they were greeted at the station by the entire first team and coaching staff, who even brought free beer for the fans. Now that's Christmas spirit!
