This is mine:

"Hello, this is an urgent message about your payment protection plan".

I have this phone call almost every day from an unknown number, I could cheerfully strangle the woman who recorded that message.

What's your most annoying phone call?

I put the phone down virtually 3-5 seconds before someone starts to annoy me, I can generally tell where its going - especially salesman who don't take no for an answer!

Personally I like to be the annoying one.

Scammer; Hello Sir, you have a virus on your computer
Me; I do?
Scammer; Yes Sir, you have a very bad infection.
Me; Should I go see a doctor then?
Scammer; No, your computer has an infection Sir.
Me; And you can see this?
Scammer; I work for Microsoft, I can see your machine.
Me; Really?
Scammer; Yes Sir.
Me; What am I doing now?
Scammer; You're browsing the internet which is dangerous because of the infection on your machine
Me; But I'm sitting down watching TV, my computer is off.
Scammer; No Sir, it's on I can tell.
Me; I think my screens broken, can you fix that? How much do you charge?
Scammer; I only remove viruses from computers.
Me; But I don't own a computer.
Scammer; Oh... (long pause).
Me; Do you mean my laptop?
Scammer; Laptops are computers Sir, yes your laptop is infected.
Me; Can you tell me how you know this?
Scammer; Your windows security alerted me Sir.
Me; Why hasn't my anti viruses found it?
Scammer; It's a new virus and Norton don't have a solution for it.
Me; I use Kaspersky though.
Scammer; The same applies Sir
Me; Okay, well thank you for your time.
Scammer; I need £130 to remove the viruses for you Sir.
Me; Viruses? I thought I had just the one.
Scammer; You have multiple Sir.
Me; Well thanks for telling me.
Scammer; This is very serious Sir.
Me; I don't believe your wrong about that.
Scammer; Sir?
Me; I best get back on duty I need to report this to my sergeant.
Scammer; Hangs up....

Try one of the new phone systems. The call guardian on the bt phone is 100% acurate. Basically you can tell it to route any calls not on your phonebook to answerphone or you can ask it to screen it befroe it rings you. Basically it asks the caller who they are and why hey need to speak to you, then calls you and asks if you wish to speak to them. Based on that response it learns for next time.

I don't answer the phone at home either, I have a telephone answering operative who screens all my calls...

And woe betide anybody who irks Mrs PTID

I only really get that at work. They're all annoying, but I was particularly annoyed by one who decided to inform me that our company name is spelt wrong (it isn't).

One of my favourites is to tell the caller that last night when I fornicated their mother she charged me 2 quid extra to stop them from calling me. If they still stay on the line I tell them that if they want me to listen to them they must pay me £5 cos their mother lied to me.

There's two application for android, one I believe is called something like 'TrueCaller' that can help in this instance but I don't know if it's on Iphone. It basically puts together other information with 'withheld' numbers and then tells you if it's a company or someone you know. It's been featured quite heavily and received raved reviews.

I almost tried it as this women wouldn't quit hassling me about interviews but that's sorted now.

Hi joe

I downloaded an app call truecaller and it wanted me to put my phone number in, being the paranoid sort alarm bells started to ring so I read the terms and conditions and it said something about using my contacts list, I then read the reviews and everyone I read said bad things, some said the app should be removed by apple because it's just a scam to get your phone number and contacts and it doesn't do what it says it does.

Reading all this I decided to delete the app, I think I'll just ignore any phone calls that are unknown and if it's genuine they'll leave a message.

Incidentally regarding calls from real people I have heard that they have a points system and the more you engage with them and the longer the calls last, the more points you get and the more points you have the more likely you are to get another call because you are perceived to be a good prospect, so since I heard that I immediately put the phone down if I realise a call is a scam.
