Shaun Derry on TalkSport

Featured Replies

Shaun Derry just been on Talk Sport 20:45 - 22:00. Talked about a lot of things, but some interesting points relative to us:

- When he inherited the squad, there were '2 big characters' in the dressing room that needed shutting up, basically. Shaun stamped these out and moved them away from the squad. I assume one would be Dean Leacock, the other? Not sure... maybe Labadie? Haynes?

- On his first team meeting, one player came in 40 minutes late, wearing a cap and sucking on a lollipop.

- There were 2 cliques, some players didn't talk to other players at all.

- Enjoyed working with some backroom staff. Highlighted Mike Edwards, Pilks, physio's and our departed Analyst.

- Didn't enjoy working with some other backroom staff who, to paraphrase, were butting in and putting him under unnecessary pressure. Obviously there is two sides to every story, but one could only assume that Rodwell would be in there, and possibly one or both of the Trews?

Sounds like Shaun did well to try and clean up the mess that was that old squad but ultimately it claimed him. Well, the rebuilding has begun so there'll be less of that hopefully. As for cliques, that sort of thing is pathetic. You're going to have your friends but you need to be civil with everyone given that it's a team sport. Glad to hear Mike and Kevin got glowing reports, they appear to be consummate professionals and it's good to hear this ratified publicly.

He mentioned players turning up late before. That first season he did a really good job weeding out the wasters and fostering a proper team spirit. Shame he then proceeded to repeat Kiwomya's mistakes ...

I wouldn't be surprised if the individual butting in was Jim Rodwell. Like you say, there are two sides to every story. Looking at who he brought into the club last season, a certain level of interference was probably warranted.

do you have any insight or opinions on this @RayTrew

sorry if this is a bit of a overload, i think we are all just pleased to have you on board.

In previous interviews Derry hasn't spoken in any way remotely bad about the club, I can only suggest this is been posted due to pressure but I don't think he should have myself. No, there's no real harm but I think anyone potentially thinking if giving him a chance here on will rethink.

That is the sad part.

When people ask what 'American Pie' is about, they're missing the point. The song isn't about the lines themselves - it's about what is between the lines. The song is about what isn't there.
