Players With Beards

Featured Replies

Has anyone noticed the proliferation (good word) of football players with beards? I was watching football on the telly at the weekend and both on match of the day and on the football league show I saw several players sporting full beards. Not goatee beards or five o'clock shadow but real full on bushy beards. Is it a fashion at the moment?

I know a lot of players are doing Movember but that is moustaches, the players I am talking about have real beards, one in particular is the goalkeeper of a premiership side, I can't remember the club or his name but he has a full black beard and a bald head!! What's all that about? He looks as if his head is on upside down. :joker:

Anyone else notice this and more importantly can you explain the phenomenon? (another good word I must stop reading that dictionary). B)

Not too many great footballers with beards that I can think of. Anyone with a beard played for England of late?

Some have had a brief flirtation with the old facial hair but not many sustain it over the longer term.

It was certainly an 80's thing, plenty of beards around then - Tony Grealish, Peter Withe & Dennis Mortimer spring to mind off the top of my head,(as opposed to my chin!).

Liam you aren't old enough to remember George Best! Mrs H had a picture of him on her bedroom wall when she was 16.

Derek Hales-Cost Rams £330,000(I think) back in the70's.He came from Charlton where he was their top scorer. It took me and my mates all of 5 minutes to decide he was a complete waste of money. On the other hand ,a player who most certainly wasn't a waste of money-Archie Gemmell.Of course older members will remember Jimmy Hill.

Agree with Liam, such a shame that George Best,a player blessed with so much natural skill, should throw it all away and also a shame he never showed the rest of the world by appearing in the world cup finals.

Ricky Villa who used to play for Spurs. Won the World Cup with Argentina in 1978. Scored a wonder goal in the 1981 FA Cup Final replay vs Man City.

Reminds me of a trivia question......

Sunderland did it in 1979 and Villa in 1981. Who did it in 1980?
