Micky Mouse Cup v Stockport

So the NL's version of the mickey mouse cup johnstone paint trophy or whatever it's called, is the FA trophy (I think)

As with the JPT, nobody cares until they get close to the final and a potential trip to Wembley. However with no fans in attendance, it hardly seems worth the effort. Add on to that the hectic schedule we face because on postponements, then it becomes a pain in the backside.

Is anybody going to watch this? I have no interest, but we've been so starved of Notts action that I was thinking about changing my mind this morning. However, apparently Stockport's pitch is stuffed, so I will probably wait until right before KO before purchasing a streaming package, if I do at all.

Hoping for a good performance, lovely passing motion, fluid movement, Notts 90% possession, their keeper has the game of his life and they score a complete fluke... straight in from the corner, keeper no chance, their only shot of the game from their only corner....

and Notts are knocked out. What a shame.

Try telling that to the Aveley chief executive!  Have at look at his reaction to being drawn to play us at Meadow Lane last season (listen from 0:45 seconds) in this link.

The FA Trophy is a very worthwhile competition, it gives non-league clubs the chance of a big day out at Wembley.  I know we'd rather not be in it, but it means an awful lot to many clubs, and it's actually the NL version of the FA Cup.  I'm hoping for a Notts win.  The Johnstone Paint Trophy was ok in it's initial form, but I boycotted it when they allowed Under-21 Premiership clubs to participate.  That was totally against the original idea of the competition.

Apart from the Aveley game, I have some great memories of the FA Trophy from last season, like holding on with 9 men to win at Yeovil and Michael Doyle's 50 yard stoppage time winner against Dagenham.  That's also worth a repeat, Charlie Slater gets more excited than the Aveley bloke!

I appreciate that it can be a good competition for the smaller clubs in non-league, but to be frank, my consideration is for Notts County and no others.

I decided to watch the stream. It very much has a friendly feel about it. 1-1. Stockport's pitch is very heavy, but playable.

Wolfe looks good. Miller having a bit of a nightmare debut.

Won 2-1 in the end. Stockport probably should have finished us when it was 1-1, missed a lot of chances.

I'll concentrate on the fringe/new/injured players to see if any of them staked a claim:

Pilling - Odd one. He is clearly comfortable with his feet but perhaps too comfortable, a bit Leeds-esque playing out from the back when it isn't on. Was caught out and Stockport missed an empty goal. Some good shot stopping. Makes you nervous from crosses because he's fairly small and you can't actually see him until he pops up and catches it. He's not going to usurp Slocombe this season, but be interesting to watch his development.

Graham and Lacey - Fairly solid, Lacey a bit rusty in patches.

Miller - Woeful first half performance, much improved after the break. A lot better going forward than he is defensively.

Wolfe - Showed that he has the ability to step in and play for either Doyle or Reeves. Offers something different.

Sam - Not a good performance. Touch too heavy and link up play not great. Won't be starting again with performances like that.

Knowles - Got a goal but did next to nothing else. Constantly loses the ball, but I see others thought he played well. I don't.  Will battle Sam for a place on the bench. Apparently Nigel Clough was watching him in the stands and might recall him, not much of a loss for us if he does.

After not playing for a while I think it was important we got back up to speed and got minutes in the legs. Also important to get into the habit of winning as it breeds confidence and can help get you going on a good run of form (Chesterfield in the trophy last season helped with this).

We also did look a bit leggy at times but that's not surprising due to us not playing for a while. However, at times we moved the ball too slowly. This is something that annoys me as I see other teams' players take a touch and pass it on, getting it out of their feet and playing a pass quickly. We are patient with our build up play, but at times it doesn't go anywhere. Need to start getting more numbers forward, taking risks and being brave, making runs and playing clinical passes in behind.

Positives included Knowles who pressed well and got himself a goal but tired late on. Ruben was class once again and Wolfe was good with his passing and bringing the ball forward, something we've lacked in midfield all too often.

I didn’t watch the game, only listened so cheers for the info above.

Think Sam missed a chance to impose himself today. Clearly got the attributes to do it, he had that good string of games a month ago but has dropped off again recently.

Good to see Wolfe had a good game, the fact it was against good opposition should now give Ardley more confidence that he is more than capable of getting more regular game time.

Interesting that Miller – who himself stated he prefers to play higher up the pitch – got the nod at LB ahead of Chicksen – Is that him and DKE ahead of him now? I wonder if he might get loaned out for the rest of the season.

Thing with Knowles is, his biggest plus is his knack of scoring (or at least getting into those positions) Whilst he might not offer much else atm it’s easier to coach those other bits than that ‘strikers instinct’. Had the goal against H’pool stood he’d be on 4 goals in 9 games (I think) and most of them as sub appearances – so not bad at all. Annoyingly I think Mansfield have a good prospect there, I’ll be interested to see where he is in a couple of years.

I just like to see us win games, regardless of the competition.  I appreciate that not many fans are interested till the later stages, but to play in a final should be every players ambition.  If they don't want to win football matches why play?, I think it would be great to get to the final, if only for the revenue it would bring. I'm certain that the club will prioritize the league above all, rightly so but as an additional get away from the league and give fringe players a chance competition,  I think it's great.

So we're further, we've beaten a decent side and some fringe players have got some match practice. It think the Trophy should have taken a sabbatical this year, but we'll just have to take the positives from it, and developing a winning habit is always good.

As for the general FA Trophy debate, I think it's a cracking competition and not at all comparable to the Checkatrade Trophy. It's exciting for the smaller clubs, and for the larger clubs it's a realistic route to Wembley. But trips to Morpeth and Wembley finals are a bit pointless if there are no fans there to enjoy them, and we've got a fixture pile-up already.

Yet another away draw in the last 16:

Saturday 6th Feb:  Havant and Waterlooville v Notts County

No interest in this cup at all, its a waste of the clubs time and the money is barely worth it. People forget the costs involved with operating games still, a few thousand pounds doesn't make it worthwhile when you have a squad that could be hit with injuries and key areas are already slim.

Can remember we lost to them before in the FA Cup, was it around 2007 time? Seem to remember it was Matt Somner playing, who should on talent have been playing for them rather than us.

Correct, it was on 1st December 2007.  They beat us 0-1 at Meadow Lane in front of 3,810 fans in the second round of the FA Cup.  McParland was manager, and this was the full Notts team:

Notts County: Pilkington, Canoville, Tann, Hunt, Mayo, Somner, MacKenzie (Butcher 79), Silk (Lee 59), Dudfield, Sam, Weston (Weir-Daley 64).
Subs Not Used: Sandercombe, Pearce.

One thing I remember from the game was someone on a messageboard titling their match review 'Haven't a Clueville 0-1 Havant and Waterlooville'!

😆😄
That really was quite an awful side, with the exception of Pilkington, Hunt, Butcher and maybe even Weston. The rest are absolute dross. I remember a few signing from Boston (Steve Thompson link?) and we really were scratching around for players from anywhere for very little. It's amazing that this team even stayed up.

the competition is still a joke, i think it should be scrapped for this season.
