Opinion: Notts must unleash rarely-seen 22-year-old next season, could really help promotion tilt
Whilst I want to openly acknowledge that Notts requires strengthening up-top off the bat, one player I believe Ian Burchnall needs to commit to giving regular game time during the 2021/22 National League season is Lewis Knight. Arriving at Meadow Lane from Bradford Park Avenue, the exciting forward who has a blistering amount of pace – described during his debut for the magpies by BT Sports as ‘rapid’ looked to be a real handful. I can only imagine how effective he can become with developing further as a player and, featuring around the likes of Kyle Wootton and Elisha Sam who should only benefit the 22-year-old. Having scored 11 goals in 15 appearances for Park Avenue, it signalled a real sign of intent by Notts to sign such as young upcoming player, but I felt slightly disappointed after his initial run of games and the appointment of Ian Burchnall that his development time seemed to be abandoned - this might’ve been due to an injury to the young striker, towards the tail end of the last campaign. I mean, I can understand that whilst Jimmy Knowles was scoring those all-important goals that it left little space for him – especially with Knowles finding himself on the bench towards the end of last season. But I saw something promising in Knight, that needs to be given time to come up to the level the club requires. It’s not just due to his pace, which alone would cause a lot of those slow lanky brutes in National League trouble – his reading of the game seems to be something promising, as he found space which other players might not have drifted into. I think with the focus being on playing quick, steady build-up football – the sheer number of knock-ons that he would be able to get onto would be exciting to see. Plus, the formation of playing three centre-backs provides Notts that extra edge up top, that someone could really thrive from with the right level of support. It’s clear that Ian Burchnall favours this style of play as it provides an extra body in attack, but with a strong tall striker like Kyle Wootton, a tricky winger like Callum Roberts – this would leave opposition teams having to commit players to marking them alone. Including the new additions to the Notts ranks, such Aaron Nemane who also has a speedy reputation. The sluggish, slow Notts of old could be a thing of the past. When you intend to play ‘pretty football’ you need players who can hang onto the ball or at least run with it, I firmly feel Lewis Knight can develop into a forward that can get those all-important goals. Knight could be the right player to advance further with the right nurturing, being a player that could develop into a free scoring striker. Nobody imagined that Wootton would be such a big hit at Meadow Lane, yet I can see a similar amount of hard-work and graft in Knight too. Whether, he plays a big part in the upcoming season – it would be a waste not to give him further time to showcase what he can do. I also, don’t believe it would benefit Notts to loan him out as its clear he needs to make the step-up in order to be a success and the chances of him going out to a team above us seems slim. If there’s one thing we know, goal scorers are hard to find and even more difficult to see do well in our famous Black & White shirts. This is why, I feel for the promising aspects of Lewis Knights game – the only way he can improve further is to be given a chance to establish himself this upcoming season. Ian Burchnall provides his thoughts on his teams return to training as Notts County prepares for their pre-season
@CliftonMagpie: No point playing Cal Roberts, he will want to feature, but we should slowly ease him back in when the season starts. I keep saying it, but another injury would be a big loss for us. I don't want a repeat of Jimmy Spencer, although the chances of an injury are much higher with Roberts. Hopefully, Tyreace Palmer gets a run out against Coalville Town.

Notts County secure deal with Chesterfield for the services of wing-back Joel Taylor
???????? He can get us going down the left flank, it will be encouraging seeing how he does for us.
-
Notts County's Cal Roberts shares fitness update after return to training
I'd avoid playing Cal in the pre-season, allow him to focus on training and then wait to slowly give him chance to gain match fitness in the league. He's better protecting, than losing again. Avoiding the Jimmy Spencer type situation, I am sure Roberts is ready and keen to go. Just need to be safe IMO.

Triple boost for Notts County after a tough and frustrating season
After losing Jake Reeve, which now in hindsight always seemed to be the case - what with Neal Ardley being sacked and the single year deal. I think retaining Sam Slocombe and Connell Rawlinson gave the club a boost, plus eased the minds of the fans who might have felt their would be a mass exodus from Meadow Lane. Michael Doyle also agreeing to become head coach is a big thing, although I believe he had already started his coaching badges with us - so that seemed highly likely but nonetheless its great news.

Pride of Nottingham Awards 2020/2021
It's better late than never they say, but in truth this has been long due after the Pride of Nottingham community voted on our annual awards for this past season. On the 7th June, voting opened up on the PON forum and across social media - including our popular Facebook group. Hundreds of fans took part, casting their vote for the players who deserved recognition after another season in the National League, where the magpies' had secured a playoff place. Pride of Nottingham's Member of the Year: @DangerousSausage claimed the 2020/2021 Member of the Year award, after slightly pipping @Piethagoram to the honours. Writing in the PON forum, he wrote "Thank you! I aim to educate and entertain. I'm touched. Here you go, have an award back." It's been a roller-coaster season, one of which the Pride of Nottingham has taken leaps and bounds after such a demanding campaign. We thank every member for playing their part, providing insights and thoughts into Notts County and we hope for another successful year for 2021/2022. Next up! Game of the Season: Chesterfield vs. Notts County clinched the Game of the Season, as the most popular choice by far - the goal-thriller and late dramatic win will be remembered for many seasons to come! Here're the highlights of the game. Signing of the Season: Mark Ellis stormed past Ruben Rodrigues who was a popular option in the category, however, Ellis stole the show after his impressive loan spell at Meadow Lane. Next up! Goal of the Season: Elisha Sam's outstanding back-heel finish took the Pride of Nottingham's Goal of the Season. Such a cheeky, special effort would always be difficult to beat. And finally, the Pride of Nottingham's Player of the Season: Who else, other than the feely scoring centre-back? Mark Ellis truly stole the show beating a vast popular options such as Kyle Wootton who played a crucial role propelling Notts to several wins - just like Ellis did upon his arrival. Once again, thank you to everyone who took part in the Pride of Nottingham awards. Match Discussion: Play Off Semi Final - The Gulls (A)
I think Torquay did their homework, happy to allow us to attack but break in a creative way. They had the advantage over Notts with the quality of crosses/set pieces, hitting balls into areas Notts can never quite deal with properly.
-
Match Discussion: Play Off Semi Final - The Gulls (A)
Agree to a point, the officiating was extremely poor and inconsistent. First goal looked offside, the penalty should never have been given. A lot of strange decisions at times, whilst Torquay dropped like flies at any given opportunity to time waste without any repercussions. That said, Notts didn't make the most of the possession. The quality wasn't quite there, but I feel nobody can be harsh on the squad. They tried, even at 4-2. I can't complain about anything, I just feel the game wasn't allowed to play smoothly or consistently - yet even this wouldn't have changed the outcome. Torquay played well, they didn't look great but they were effective. If Notts could learn to create and control games like Torquay, we'd win a lot more. The club can improve, merits for a decent season but no fury or flame should be said. Not even to Michael Doyle who gave the ball away very softly and without pressure, but today did prove he makes more mistakes than he contributed positive play. Extremely wasteful, but then others could be criticised - i.e a sub that contributed nothing, could've involved himself a lot more but wasted any chance of influencing the game.
-
Match Discussion: Play Off Semi Final - The Gulls (A)
The clubs teased that Jim O'Brien has trained well, this amused me. I think Notts are very determined to do well right now, so I agree that the focus is there. It depends on how the game goes, but our midfield is good enough to control the game. We just need to create more chances - or at least more than Torquay and actually take them. One concern for me is Ruben Rodrigues he looked shattered against Chesterfield, yes, I am sure he's very fit but for me he looked like someone who needed a rest. I would rather start Enzio and rest Rodrigues, to allow O'Brien to come in. That said, I think we'd miss Rodrigues but sometimes you have to balance these things. I Suppose he could start, then come off if we're comfortable. It's all for Ian Burchnall to ponder however, and it's a difficult decision.
-
Match Discussion: Game 45 - The Terras (H)
Ruben Rodrigues stole the show in my eyes, he was absolute class and started off looking to break a very poor Weymouth side down. They played like we do when we have no clue, defensively poor and no creativity to get in in goal. However, I do feel our midfield bossed them but we could've won by a much higher scoreline. Superb team performance but Rodrigues would be my Man of the Match.
-
Match Discussion: Game 43 - The Bees (A)
Who's going to want the win the most? I think it's going to be a fight from both teams, on paper I would favour us but I know Barnet has a tendency to suss us out. I'd like to think we'd focus more on a balanced side, rather than attacking or purely taking any risks as a means to forge a result. Barnet do have some players who will punish a poor defensive side and that is exactly what Notts are right now. It will come down to who takes their chances and whose midfield will work the hardest to make those happen. My minds saying this will be a 2-2 draw.

Match Discussion: Game 42 - The U's (H)
There's a lot on social media, I hope it does work out but it's still a disappointing hiring/start. Fingers crossed Burchnall can get an experienced assistant behind him come the end of the season. Experience could make a difference in speeding up his learning curve.
-
Match Discussion: Game 42 - The U's (H)
Good result, determination shown to get the win even by going to 10 men. Some of the comments I read on Facebook about Sutton had me bemused, I've seen them about 5 times this season and they've always given a good account of themselves. I think it's a positive but we can't read to much into it - at least it leaves the playoffs with a glimmer of a chance.
-
Match Discussion: Game 41 - The Robins (A)
I haven't changed it, I really should but part of me wishes he was still here. Those fools who called for Ardley after every defeat/draw, poor souls are now in overtime. I imagine they'll be doing it even if Ian Burchnall wins 3 games in a row back to back. ????
-
Match Discussion: Game 37 - Pools (A)
This could be a good indication as to what type of manager we currently have at the reins of Notts, Hartlepool will be a tough team but defensively if we attack they could crumble. Their midfield controls games, they work hard to create chances and have plenty of players who can finish the game. If we start as we did against Wrexham or just slow in general - I can easily see them assuming instant control. It's going to be a difficult game, unless we approach it the right way. First 20 minutes both teams will be wanting to feel each other out, so avoiding an early setback is a must.
-
Match Discussion: Game 36 - The Cardinals (A)
I checked at 2-1 to Woking, then a short time later it was 2-2. Then 2-3 and 2-4. ???? At 2-1 I thought 'here we go' and I honestly didn't expect much from the game but when I last checked. I felt happy, as it seems we might have found our confidence - rebounding and responding from set backs has been something we've struggled with bar Chesterfield (who gave us that win).

Maisie-Grace Titherley: An appeal
Match days aren't the same without speaking to MG, she's a burst of light and a very brave young person. I have the utmost respect for her and I have been touched by her struggles, but her attitude still remains incredibly bubbly despite the hardship. Her families always at games, I hope to you reach your goal MG. Best wishes to you and your family.

Maisie-Grace Titherley: An appeal
We would like to share the story of Maisie-Grace, an eight-year-old Notts fan. When Maisie-Grace was born, she had a hole in her back with the spine and nerves exposed. Her first operation, to close her spine, was when she was just three hours old. Maisie-Grace spent six of the first 24 hours of her life in an operating theatre, and her family thought they'd lost her five times. When Maisie-Grace was just three weeks old, she had three procedures a week, putting a large needle into the top of her head to drain spinal fluid, and at six weeks old, she had a VP shunt fitted which drains all the fluid from the brain. Shunts are man made and nobody knows how long they will work for which means more operations. Maisie-Grace has a number of conditions including spina bifida meningomyelocele, neuropathic bladder & bowel, hydrocathlus, dislocated hips, autism traits, sleep apnea and a beighton score of 7, which means hyper mobility joints. She has undergone 15 operations and as she gets older she will be having lots more. Unfortunately, the NHS can not fund the right wheelchair that is needed, so Maisie-Grace's grandmother, Alison, is hoping to raise enough money to buy her granddaughter the wheelchair she needs. This wheelchair will have the right support for her hips & spine, and it also grows with her and could last her till late teens. Maisie-Grace will be able to go over rough terrain like walking through the woods and will be much easier to wheel over grass. Also, when Maisie-Grace goes on holiday, she will finally be able to go in the sea as the wheelchair will be able to go across the sand. When it’s snowing, Maisie-Grace is unable to go out in her wheelchair as we struggle to push it through the snow but with the new one she will be more mobile and be able to explore a lot more than she can now. "This wheelchair is also 10kg lighter than the NHS one, she also has fallen out of her NHS chair twice before forwards and hurt herself," said Alison. "She's really hoping that we can raise the funds to buy the new wheelchair and if she's lucky maybe a trike too." A trike means Maisie-Grace would be able to go on bike rides with her friends and family. "Maisie-Grace has to use her hands to wheel it around," added Alison. "This would build up her body strength, as she dislocates her hips and is not allowed to use pedals. "Hopefully in the next month the company will be out about the trike, but we've had quotes for a new wheelchair." Maisie Grace's family have approached several charities but unfortunately due to COVID-19 may of those are closed for funding. If you would like to donate any money to the cause, Alison has created a Gofundme - the link is here.

Match Discussion: Game 15 - The Glovers (A)
Scrap that, I've just seen that the game is cancelled. ????
-
Match Discussion: Game 15 - The Glovers (A)
I think if we are to play a single striker, with wingers to add support - one of them must at times play further central as this would give support for the striker to make ground (rather than isolating our options). If Piethagoram's line-up is what Neal Ardley ops for, then Elisha Sam and, Tom Walker will need to rotate their duties with supporting Kyle Wootton during attacks. Our midfield needs to avoid playing too far up the field, whilst not being that deep - somewhere in the middle would work. As I can see Yeovil wanting to use their pace and, counter us - as they will no doubt see set pieces as a means to flood our defensive if given the chance.
-
Match Discussion: Game 14 - The Wood (H)
It should be a straight forward game, but usually these types of games aren't. I've just tried to talk @super_pie into watching the game, I met just watch it on my own. ???? Hopefully, our lot won't be tired and can inject the pace needed to keep the momentum going forward. It's important that we take the steam out of the opposition by retaining the ball, we don't have to go straight into 5th gear and chase everything. Provided Notts does the basics are done well, keeps hold of the ball and creates chances. Now, that Kyle Wootton has found the net again - I think his confidence on goal will be higher. I could easily see him slipping a couple past the Boreham Wood keeper tonight.

Shaun Derry: The Magpie Circle - The Great Escape double episode feature
It's a fantastic episode, Paul always does a great job with flowing from subject to subject whilst allowing the guest to speak openly about their time at the club. This double episode with Shaun Derry is an excellent podcast, I loved hearing about Steve Finnan and the old cow shed area where the players used to train.
-
Match Discussion: Game 13 - The Cardinals (H)
If Notts continues on the last performances they will break sides down. I'm not sure we will thrash anyone any time soon, I think it will be much harder to gain that sort of momentum. The odd 3 goals I can see being shipped past a side, I'm not sure Woking are one of those sides. I can see it being 2-1 to Notts. We are playing very well at Meadow Lane, Notts should be able to control the game and lead the game comfortably despite my prediction. I just can't see Woking being a push over.
-
Match Discussion: Game 12 - Daggers (A)
I really need to make sure I can get to listen/watch the streams, however, I didn't and ended up being told the final score. I have read comments which suggest Notts played well, created chances but nothing clinical. Others have mentioned a possible penalty, I can't comment on that but did note it lead to comments about the match official being poor. A draw isn't the worst outcome, Notts are still undefeated and it means that we still have something to protect in terms of avoiding defeat. 3 points would've been nice, yet I can't say that a draw is a bad result.
-
Match Discussion: Game 12 - Daggers (A)
@Super_Danny_Allsopp Miles is still a quick player who's a handful, yet his crossing isn't that good but he does stretch play. I've watched him a number of times this season and he does well, for them. I'm hopeful we give Tom Walker a start, although if he's not been playing much Neal Ardley might just use him as a sub.
