Should be looking at a million or two from a championship side.

We had a welcome amount of rain here. The ground is wet, & the grass will welcome it too. Only downside is that within a week the grass will need to be cut, first time in many many weeks.

Injuries aside, on the evidence of the first two competitive matches it looks like Platt & Macari, Baker & McDonald will have to work hard to try to dislodge Gibbons, Ness & Bedeau from the starting eleven. Platt is a class act so he will have a much better chance of dislodging one of the three that have played very well so far. McDonald held the number one spot for periods last season with his impressive displays, so he'll have something to say. Baker will be keen to impress as he has been on the bench waiting for an opportunity. Sometimes injuries happen & opportunities open up. It just depends whether Platt & Macari can recover well & get back to full fitness after such a long layoff. Then there is McDonald and Baker to consider. It will be fascinating to see how Head Coach Martin Paterson handles it. One thing's for sure, the fight for places at the back may well become very competitive with 7 players vying for 3 places, but Martin always has the back four option to consider.

Of course the match day squad are going to be disappointed that they didn't get the win, but there are very encouraging signs for Notts drawing with the favourites for Promotion.They competed with Leicester on an equal footing. Leicester were panicking at the back due to the Notts heavy pressing on quite a few occasions. I thought that Notts were superb all over the pitch & were unfortunate to go behind when they did. It did take a spectacular strike to beat Belshaw. Once Leicester took the lead I thought that Notts showed lots of character to come back the way they did. Grant, who had his critics last season, showed lots of composure to put the ball away, after a header from Acquah had rebounded off the post to him. It was great to see the Notts substitutes making a difference when they came on. If Notts could recruit an experienced 20 goal striker & a good number 10 for this level, I think that Notts might surprise some in the football world this season.

It's a nice statement from the Owners. On the evidence of the first two competitive matches, the summer recruitment has gone very well. It's also pleasing that it appears that Martin Paterson has had input in the recruitment too. It's clear that the brothers trust their recruitment system & the recruitment system has been successful and the evidence bears that out. Two promotions in three years is evidence that it is working.

It was a very encouraging performance by the lads. The performance had Martin Paterson's hand all over it. The team showed all the traits that the Head Coach wanted to see, I do believe that we can now say for certain that this squad of players are Martin Patersons squad. Whatever Martin asks of his players they will do. I think another important point is the experience that Martin can bring to bear after saving Burton in League 1 a few seasons ago. We've only seen two competitive games but the signs are very good. The players are going to battle in every game. It might not always be pretty but it could be very effective.

By the way. I do think that Martin Paterson deserves a mention. For his first team selection, the way that his players performed together, & the way that he has worked the squad into a cohesive unit, (on the evidence of the first two competitive matches) in such a short time, speaks volumes for him as the Head Coach if I could rate him I'd give him a 9.5.

A great all round performance by the lads yesterday. My shortlist for M of the M were Ness, Lipsiuc, Cooper, Campbell & Tsaroulla. I chose Tsaroulla as I thought he just shaded it.

Yes it was very good start. In fact I would go a little bit further and describe it as an outstanding start. The style of this team is now 100% in Paterson's image Long may it continue. The team is sure to have it's off days & we know that teams won't approach the game like Leicester did, but if the players can play with the high intensity & physicality that they demonstrated today, a comfortable mid table finish is a possibility.

The first League Match of the Season was a brilliant game. Notts gave as good as they got and with the chances they had could easily have won the game today. So who is your man of the match today?

His performance in the Playoff final was top three championship class at the very least. If he is allowed to go serious questions need to be asked about the reasoning for letting him go.
