David McGoldrick Signs Two-Year Contract with Boyhood Club Notts County

PON_News

Notts County is thrilled to announce that academy graduate David McGoldrick has returned to Meadow Lane and signed a two-year contract.

The 35-year-old had a phenomenal 2022-23 season with Derby County, scoring 25 goals and earning the title of Fans’ and Players’ Player of the Season.

Despite narrowly missing out on the Sky Bet League One play-offs, McGoldrick was offered the chance to stay at Pride Park. However, he has chosen to fulfil his long-held ambition of returning to his boyhood club.

The board of directors and head coach Luke Williams are delighted to welcome back a player who was widely regarded as one of the top performers in the third tier.

A statement from the club reads: “We’re overjoyed to welcome someone of David’s immense quality and experience.

He joins us on the back of his best-ever goalscoring season, but his talents extend far beyond his ability in front of goal.

David is an incredibly intelligent and intricate footballer who also boasts tremendous physicality. We believe he can be hugely effective in a number of attacking roles.”

Nottingham-born McGoldrick progressed through Notts County's academy and made his senior debut at just 16 years old in a 2-1 home defeat to Swindon Town in 2004. He made another three appearances that season before being signed by then-Premier League side Southampton for an undisclosed fee.

After returning to Notts County on loan in 2005-06, he established himself at St Mary’s and finished the 2008-09 season as the Saints’ top scorer with 14 goals.

McGoldrick’s career then took him to Nottingham Forest, Coventry, Ipswich Town and Sheffield United. His performances for the Blades earned him an extension to his initial one-year deal, and he repaid them with 15 goals to help fire them into the Premier League.

He went on to make 63 Premier League appearances for United, scoring 10 top-flight goals including a delightful finish against Arsenal which won him the club’s 2020-21 Goal of the Season award.

After departing Sheffield United, McGoldrick signed a one-year contract with Derby County last summer. It proved to be an outstanding piece of business for Notts County's near neighbours as he scored an incredible three hat-tricks on his way to scoring 22 goals in League One.

McGoldrick also boasts international experience having won 14 caps for Republic of Ireland and being voted the FAI’s Senior International Player of the Year in 2020.

I am still undecided about this. I think he could do wonders for us, but the main issue is how he will fit into the team. I hope he proves to me that it was a good decision to bring him back and that we manage to keep Macca for the full season.

What a good signing. McGoldrick is exactly what we need. He’s got experience, quality and passion. He’s going to help us a lot this season.

i think he might play in a similar role to ruben, i am hoping and wishing we can maintain both ruben and nemane but i do feel like both may accept offers elsewhere. as for his age, its not a concern but we need to be remindful about not having enough speed.

goodluck to david.

I have mixed feelings about this. He could be a good asset for us, but I wonder how he will fit in with the team. I hope he proves that he can repeat his last season but with us.

I believe he will make a significant impact for us this season and help us achieve our goals. His addition to the squad is a positive development and I am looking forward to seeing him in action.

In my opinion, it all depends on his role and the number of games he played. He performed well for Derby in a team that was pretty much forced together. I have decided to see the bigger picture and feel that if he can do well in that situation, his experience can help us in ours.

It's important to consider the context in which he was playing and the challenges he faced. Despite the difficulties, he was able to perform at a high level and contribute to the team's success. This shows his resilience and adaptability, qualities that can be valuable in any situation.

I believe it could be a good signing. However, it depends on how we integrate him into the squad. David McGoldrick didn’t have to return to Notts. Let’s give him a chance.

Fantastic signing, I just hope we don’t lose Rodriguez, he’s one of the best players I’ve seen in a Notts shirt in recent years.

Welcome back David. I’m eager to see how you will perform against League 2 defenders. Well done to everyone who made this deal possible.

I was wrong about this deal. David McGoldrick’s interview made me see that he is not coming back to Notts for a sentimental reason. He genuinely wants to help the club and he still has a lot of passion and quality to offer. He is not afraid of the challenge and he can inspire the rest of the team with his experience and skill.

I apologise for being too harsh and cynical. I hope McGoldrick proves me wrong and shows everyone what he can do at Notts. I hope he enjoys his return and makes us proud. He deserves our respect and support, not our doubt and criticism. Welcome home, David McGoldrick!

David Mcgoldrick  served us well last season and I would have liked him to stay but I think it would be asking too much to expect him to repeat his goal scoring performances  consistently in League one week in week out.We were also very fortunate not to lose him for too many games due to injury. Also I think my team probably only offered him a one season contract. I wonder, will he be mainly used as a super sub for the last 20/30 minutes or will he be subbed himself after giving his all.Of course there is much more to his game than scoring goals.Expect the unexpected and little moments of magic. Thanks for the memories and good luck ,Didzy,

Welcome home David, I’m really excited to see him in the black and white stripes again, once he starts banging goals in we’ll all wonder why there were any doubts.
